powerball drawing. it's the fourth largest in powerball history... it's been growing for two months with no winners. stephanie/2ram good evening. i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2ram and i'm jack miller. it's been nearly a year since the powerball jackpot was as high as it is tonight. which means plenty of people have been out buying up tickets today hoping to get lucky. but is there a way to actually figure out which numbers have a better chance? tonight, local 5's nikki davidson talked to several experts for answers. jack: she's here with more in tonight's big story, nikki? nikki: right a lot of people stopped by places like this hoping they'll get rich tonight... but the truth is... the odds of winning with one ticket.... are one in 292 million.... not good odds... but how can you maximize your chances of winning? we asked quite a few "experts" in different areas today... (nat printing) once those numbers are selected... it's a just a waiting game until the big drawing... the iowa lottery says here in iowa... often it takes just one shot. 19:22:05 we've had

one ticket, really all it takes is one. and most winners do have a certain way to pick their numbers... 19:22:57 80 percent of the plays in powerball are easy pics, therefore 80 percetn of the winners are easy picks, doesn't make it luckier just more of them opposed to picking better numbers. so for real strategy we turned to someone who knows numbers better than most... (19:38:16 divided by 5 divided by 4 gets y ou the 292) drake university assistant math professor maryann heuy... 19:25:08 theres no way to predict, people look back at the numbers looking for patterns, but it's a true random event. she says contrary to any rumors... your chances don't increase by playing the same numbers time and time again in different drawings. 19:25:28 the winning numbers in the past have the same chances of coming up again, theres no way to game the system... but says if you don't
10:03 pm
better off leaving the picking to the computer. 19:40:41 as humans we think we are random, but we're not as random as we think. we may have favorite years , meaningful experiences, its likely others have those same meaningful experiences. so what about actually visiualizing the numbers before they're drawn... we asked the lady with the best chance of doing that... des moines pyshic vianne higgins... 9:50:18 if there were i wouldn't be doing this, my friends and family would be on an island. she says using powers to guess the numbers probably won't work... but if you want more money... you need to visisualize success... and go from there... 9:49:51 write a check, use fake money and really believe its going to happen, and let it go. nikki: interestingly enough the iowa lottery tells me for this drawing... only about 40 percent of the number combinations were picked by people who purchased a ticket... they have seen as much as 80 percent of the number combinations picked in the past. and if you want to be sure you picked different numbers than
10:04 pm
want to avoid picking birthdays.... because those are all numbers under 31... as well as the combination... 123456.... that is apparently the most popular pick. in west des moines, nikki davidson local five news we are iwoa. jack: so here's the moment you've all been waiting for. moment you've all been waiting for. let's take a look at the numbers... 02 11 47 62 63 17 stephanie: it may be a hot lotto night, but it's starting to really cool down outside. brad: (adlibs into weather
