"local 5 news at 5:30 in hd starts now. we are iowa " nikki: good evening. welcome to local 5 news, i'm nikki davidson. glad you're with us tonight. nikki: a 71 year old woman has been found dead in her des moines home... her death is being investigated as a homicide... local five's jacob peklo has the latest details in tonights big story.... jacob peklo, reporting: "the des moines police department has been investigating this scene since 4:30 sunday morning. initially, they came out here after a

minutes later they determined they were investigating the city's first homicide of 2016." sgt. paul parizek, des moines police department: "right now, anything that's here that doesn't look like it belongs here is evidence. so, we've started a long process of identifying things that just seem out of place. we're just looking for anything that wasn't here before." police say they got a call from inside the home at 1413 pioneer road to check on 71- year-old norma jean mcneeley in the middle of the night. officers say a relative made the call after hearing a cry out from mcneeley's downstairs bedroom. sgt. paul parizek, des moines police department: "we can't discuss those details right now, but her death was violent." detectives found around 100 drops of blood in the area around the porch, and stretching down the street from mcneeley's home. police say mcneeley never left her house sunday morning and died inside of it as well. they spent the morning and afternoon interviewing potential witnesses, but say it'll take a little while to put everything together. sgt. paul parizek, des moines police

evidence that we first saw at the home, we were able to follow quite a distance from the home. so, as they processed the scene, it took them to an area across the street." jacob peklo, reporting: "at this time police have not named any suspects in mcneeley's death, but they do say they have some solid leads. reporting in des moines, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa." nikki: the polk county medical examiner is now assisting with the investigation as well. nikki: a new development in the escaped inmate from the newton correctional release center. 28-year-old edward shorter was apprehended last night after he turned up missing during a routine count yesterday afternoon. shorter is serving a twenty year sentence for possession of controlled susbstances... nikki: an oskaloosa man is dead after a crash on highway 92 involving a stalled car... according to highway patrol a toyota highlander stalled on the side of highway 92 two miles west of oskaloosa... investigators say 62 year old georgie crews was headed eastbound on that road and ran into the back of the stalled vehicle... forcing it to collide with a third vehicle on the road. crews was pronounced

another celebrity is stepping up to the plate for hillary clinton. award-winning actress jamie lee curtis visited a number of homes around the metro today, starting at a house party in waukee, curtis told the crowd she felt

after seeing her performance during the second democratic presidential debate. she believes clinton is by the far the strongest candidate in the field and has the credentials to get the job done. jamie lee curtis, actress: "the president of the united states has to be someone who can make those decisions when life hinges, when something happens, with intelligence, compassion, real command, and i feel that she is the most competent in that area." curtis is making several other visits for the curtis is making several other visits for the clinton campaign today. she says at this point, she's willing to do whatever's necessary to help out. nikki/ots: the des moines area religous council held a prayer service in support of religous tolerence today. the event took place in windsor heights... fifty to a hundred people gathered to talk about faith. it was open to all--no matter their stance on religion-- they spoke on how they should not feel threatened on their religous stance. warmer thoughts many central iowans continuing to celebrate some good news today after the ragbrai route was announced last night. the nearly 420 mile trip starts in glenwood and ends in muscatine. three central iowa towns...shenand oah, creston and ottumwa... are stops along the way. this year, the committee is celebrating a number of relative new faces to the ride. organizers say it will be the third shortest and the 15th easiest route in its history. they believe it's another great mix of places to visit. t.j. juskiewicz, ragbrai director: "we go to some great, great traditional iowa towns with center squares, towns like centerville and leon have got a really neat downtown, so ragbrai is going to feel really welcome there. " nikki: more than 100- thousand people are expected to participate in the ride. ottumwa and shenandoah are each breaking 13 year droughts

jordan: ever since their december 10th loss to iowa state, the iowa hawkeyes have hit another gear, winning 8 straight, 3 over top 15 teams and that includes their win over then #1 michigan state. but in my opinion, it was the game at #14 purdue that really showed the true potential of this squad, down as many as 19, before rallying for a 70-63 win... this afternoon the two met, in the rematch! 1st half, iowa with another great start. jarrod uthoff nails back to back three balls! hawks up 10-4.
