>> ♪ >> "action news." delaware valley's leading news program. with matt o'donnell, tamala edwards, karen rogers and with matt o'donnell, tamala >> ♪ >> good morning, everyone, it's 5 o'clock. it is wednesday, september 3rd and here's what's happening. >> students in bucks county returned to class for the first time since a crash claimed the lives of three of their classmates. >> a thief smashes through the window of an suv to steal tens of thousands of dollars worth of gold. only "action news" speaks to the victim. >> a resource center opens its doors in atlantic city today to help with the recent wave of unemployment. >> and we're going to back off on that heat just a little bit. let's go to david and karen. good morning. >> backing off on the humidity as we go through the day as well, guys. right now satellite showing that the rain from last night rumbled through is that gone. there are some break in the clouds although we're starting out a little on the gray side. we're still warm. 75 degrees in philadelphia, 67 in allentown, 72 in wilmington, 71 in trenton and

76 in sea isle city. might still feel a tad humid to you early in the day but that humidity is going to drop as the day goes on. as we head outside to get that car rolling, 72 degrees by 6:00, 74 by 8 o'clock, some clouds, less humid and all your buses and rails we'll find out from karen rogers in a little bit whether or not they're running. 75 today by 9 o'clock. by noon, 82. and then 87 degrees by 3 o'clock. it looks like we'll get a high today of 88 probably around 3:30. so obviously it is still a very warm afternoon ahead but at least it won't be as oppressively humid as yesterday. karen, i'll have the rest of the seven day including the return of another round of humidity coming up be okay. >> all right, dave. yes, those buses and rails are doing okay. how about the roads? this is i-95. some construction here in southwest philadelphia right at enterprise avenue. you can see penndot's got the arrow board, we've got the cones set up as well blocking the left lane so watch for this right now and it's not a lot of traffic out there at this early hour but just remember to stay right coming off of the girard point bridge on i-95 if you head here

southbound towards the airport, some construction out there this morning. also doing some paving, it's on the boulevard northbound and that's between somerdale avenue and welsh road its blocking the inner drive. that's going the last for about another hour so watch for that one on the boulevard. meanwhile your speeds elsewhere looking pretty good. we have a problem a-fire here under control at a day care. so watch for wadsworth avenue and provident road here in east mount airy with crews on the scene. stick to mount airy avenue as your alternate for that one and also in middletown township bucks county we have an accident and a downed pole here. peco is on the scene. it happened late last night but still on the scene trying to fix the downed pole. route 213 maple avenue blocked at flowers mill road, matt. >> thank you karen. students return to school with heavy hearts. they are mourning the loss of three classmates. "action news" reporter annie mccormick is live outside council rock high school south which begins its school year in just hours. annie. >> reporter: and matt that's right, today is the first day back for those students

without their three classmates who were killed in that crash over the weekend but the administration has really made sure since they found out about this accident and about this deadly crash to make sure that the students here have had an outlet for their grief including last night when they held a vigil here. students and families filed into council rock high school south tuesday night for a vigil in honor of three students killed in a rollover crash saturday in the poconos. many nervous about what the first days of school will be like without the popular teens about to begin their sophomore year. >> going to be hard for a lot of people. a lot of people were very, very close to these kids. it's just going to be hard for a lot of people imryan lesher cullen keffer and shamus digney were killed in the accident after leaving breakfast with friends. a 15-year-old new york girl was at the wheel of the suv driving without a license. two other teens who were also in the vehicle including another council rock south student. he has since been released from the hospital.

the driver and the 16-year-old passenger from new york are also okay. more than 2,000 showed up for the vigil. all three were athletes and received support from their teams, the student body and the community. we are told three of the four families whose children were involved in the crash were also there. students and the administration talked about how they're planning to cope during the first week of school from the beginning of this tragedy the school administration has made counselors available and now they will continue to offer support but also get kids in the routine of school knowing that there is still tough days ahead. >> our kids are about to go through something that we don't even know how to manage this evening services in three days. we'll support those families as they go through that terrible time. >> reporter: and again a superintendent saying that one of the best things to do for children who are grieving is to get them into a routine. they will have a moment of silence this morning and of course they will have grief

counselors on hand. for now reporting live in holland, pennsylvania, annie mccormick, channel 6 "action news." >> annie, thank you for that. and new this morning, a 69 year old jersey man has been charged with sexually assaulting two children in the lehigh valley. hunterdon county prosecutors say frank curial junior of asbury engaged in assembly acts with two children in 2003 and 2008. prosecutors did not give the exact ages of the children but said they were under 13 years old. they also did not give their gender. curial is in under done county prison on $100,000 bail. >> happening today, a resource center to help laid off casino workers opens at the atlantic city convention center. ac unites here begins at 9 o'clock this morning. the resource center will help them sign up for health coverage under the affordable care act. workers will learn how to get assistance with food and utilities. police are looking for surveillance video that might lead them to the man whose

smash and grab theft of a vehicle netted him $140,000 in pure gold. "action news" reporter chad pradelli spoke exclusively with the victim, simon cohen. ohio has been in the wholesale gold business for years but says this is the first time he's been robbed. the heist happened while cohen was making a stop at a gold business at 52nd and market streets yesterday afternoon. the thief smashed a window in the suv and grabbed the gold which was in the front seat. >> obviously somebody know me. >> reporter: do you think you were followed. >> a hundred percent because i come here every week and they know. so, somebody was following me. >> reporter: cohen says that the stolen gold is not found he may be on the hook to pay back his new york supplier and claims he does not have the money to cover it. >> it is 5:06. in last night's quick hitting storms left some damage in their wake. route 70 in cherry hill was shut down for a stretch between i-295 and brace road when a large tree branch

toppled onto the eastbound lanes. no cars were damaged. and snapped wires in haddon township cut wire temporary to customers along the 100 block of west crystal lake avenue. firefighters in delaware county are assessing whether lightning sparked this fire at a clock late factory in eddystone it broke out on the 900 block of industrial highway. it was brought under control about an hour later. no one was hurt. you can always go to 6abc.com for the very latest weather conditions. our interactive maps allow you to see exactly what the weather is like in your neighborhood. you can also check the hourly and the seven-day forecast any time you want to. >> after seeing those stories the good news is those storms and little less heat and humidity. >> yeah, we're going to ease things back a little bit. still be warm enough to keep a bottle of water with you today i think. storm tracker 6 live double scan shows you that the rain from overnight is now pushing off the coast as expected and as we take a look outside we may still have lingering cloud cover across much of the

region as we head into the early part of the day. over all looking at a fairly good amount of sunshine today. 72 degrees in wilmington, 67 degrees right now in allentown and then 76-degree reading on the boardwalk in atlantic city and also down the pike in sea isle city. satellite and radar shows you the lack of storm activity now as it's all passed through. had a watch box last night but only out to the west. as you're headed out on the roads there might be a little bit of cloud cover but as you can see every now and then a little break in the clouds and eventually we'll get to the other side of that cloud deck and we'll wind up with as i said the return of some sunshine today. up in allentown much better. 84 instead of up in the low 90's, less humid, a mix of sun and clouds depending on what part of the day you're talking about, it might be more sun than clouds or vice versa many down the shore a sun and clouds mix starting out kind of gray down the beach. 77 by noon, 83 by 3 o'clock and not as humid as yesterday particularly as we move through the afternoon. today in philadelphia a high of 88 degrees. breezy, warm, less humid.

winding up with a fair amount of sunshine. it will be a little bit breezy with that wind out of the northwest at 10 to 20 miles per hour. of course that northwest is an important direction 'cause there's usually dry air up there. when you can get the wind coming down out of the northwest you tend to lower your humidity. that's going to happen today. 74 degrees by 8 o'clock, by 11 o'clock 79 and then 86 degrees by 2 o'clock. and 86 again by 5:00 with that high of 88 somewhere in between, probably around 3:30 or so. for the union tonight, big game against toronto fc. in fact it's the beginning of a home at home set against toronto who is three points ahead of the unity standings i believe. 82 degrees for the start, 79 in the 90th minute and right now on my "action news" facebook fan page and also on my twitter account i'm tweeting out a preview of tonight's big contest as the union try and hone in on a playoff spot. future tracker 6 tomorrow shows you not very much in the way of cloud cover. maybe a little bit every now and then. no precipitation as tomorrow looks like another really nice day across the region. your exclusive accuweather 7-day, 88, breezy and warm

today. lowering humidity as day goes on. and then partly sunny on thursday, 89 and another nice day. hot and a bit more humid on friday, 90 and the chance of a late day shower or a thunderstorm on friday. and then saturday hot and humid, 92 degrees and again there will be some afternoon showers and thunderstorms at times. it looks like we basically start to improve on sunday, though. there could be a shower lingering early but we're hoping they're done in the morning so that for the eagles home opener we're pleasant, 80, some sun returning and a win for the eagles against the jags. >> that would be nice to be one and zero. >> yeah. >> next up a major retailer says customers' credit and debit card information could have been compromised and this latest breach could be bigger than the one that happened last fall at target. >> a tale of two cities. why employees at a california mall only want to work in certain stores. karen. >> in morrisville bucks county we're looking good here route 1 at pennsylvania avenue but not far off from bucks county we've got an accident with a downed pole. we'll have the latest on that when we come back.

[laughter] >> my kids go back tomorrow. your suburban traffic report time right now. let's go on outside and show you what it looks like right now. i want to start with this because we have an issue in middletown township in bucks county. it's an accident that happened late last night but the trouble is it brought down a pole. peco is on the scene. they're still working on it at this point so route 213, that's maple avenue, remains blocked at flowers mill road. you can use 413 or business route 1. both moving fine at this hour but that's your best alternate around that. in montgomery county here staying we've got northeast extension northbound between mid county toll plaza and lansdale. construction blocking the left lane at this point but seeing speeds of about 55 miles an hour so no problems there. now we'll use this camera to go outside in lionville. chester county its a quiet scene this morning. route 100 at 113 from 9:00 until 3:00 today i had warned you both, this lasts through friday, they're doing construction so that's going to cause problems later northbound between ship road and 113 but in the meantime

you're doing fine until 9 o'clock. so, no worries until then. let's go to your commuter traffic report which interestingly enough, matt o'donnell shared that he likes to have his waze app talk to him. >> always. >> in elvis' voice. >> yeah, yeah. >> that was a little too much information that he shared. and any way looking at the jersey shore area we're looking fine if you're coming in on the garden state parkway, going to take the atlantic citiy atlantic city expressway up and over the ben franklin or walt whitman bridge we have that construction on 42 that continues to go on but other than that we're seeing no issues, no reports of accidents in those areas so looking pretty good. i want to show you satellite 6 and action radar. my kids' soccer got canceled earlier with those storms that moved through late yesterday and as we look now we could see some cloud cover but we're in the clear and in fact no storms forecasted for this afternoon so you're not going have in any impact with today's afternoon activities. it's breezy and warm, less humid, 88 for your high. no weather related problems today, tam. >> thank you karen. a high school football player on staten island new york collapsed and died during a practice yesterday.

his teammates say 15-year-old miles kirkland was running drills in the heat and humidity with other players when he fell to the ground. the 6-foot two, 320-pound junior was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. his father said the teen had just had a physical in july which cleared him to play football. an autopsy is being conducted. a california mall is in a strange predicament. different minimum wages depending on what size of the mall you work on. san jose raised its minimum wage to $10.15 an hour while it's only nine dollars in santa clara. some businesses have shops on both sides of the dividing line so what they do to make it fair is they rotate employees each week. but other stores are having a hard time hiring employees. it seems people only want to work on one side of the mall. >> the phillies gave fans a taste of the future as it started its top minor league prospect for the first time.

mikhail franco had a pretty good game at third base against the braves in atlanta last night making a tough play look easy. he didn't get any hits but did hit a long fly ball in the eighth inning to earn his face major league rbi. phillies win four to nothing shutting out the braves for the second straight night. series finale is this afternoon. >> 5:17 now. coming up the latest retailer to fall victim to a major credit card breach. >> having both breasts removed to prevent breast cancer's return is becoming more common butter new research finds it may not be necessary. david. >> we have shorts and t's on the kids as it's going to be another worm one out there but not nearly as humid so you're i'll have your daypart forecast coming up

as humid. and at the airport we're hoping for green planes on the big board and that's what we've got so far. no rain reported in any of our most frequently traveled destinations, tam. >> okay, thank you david. going to health check another american doctor has contracted ebola in liberia. the missionary group serving in mission says the unnamed doctor worked in an obstetrics ward in the hospital in the country's capital. they don't know how the unidentified doctor became infected because ebola patients were treated in a separate area. the two american doctors who survived ebola after returning to atlanta also worked for sim usa. more than 1500 people have died across west africa from ebola. and further in health check women with cancer in one breast will sometimes have both breasts removed but that doesn't seem to boost their rate for survival. stanford university doctors looked at 190,000 cases. they saw the same success after 10 years from lumpectomies that's where just the cancerous tissue in the one breast is removed combined with radiation as they did
