5:02 pm
as we see over there way you see the airport fire units they are expected to do some sort of water arch. i'm not sure if that is over the plane or the tour buses. but that should be a sight to see. let's go to a video, a plane carrying university officials and alums arrived here at the airport and they said the players are right behind. the team is expected to get a police escort through philadelphia. and the fans are here to cheer through the fence as they reach the tarmac, on the plane is the president of the university. father peter donahue, we asked him what it means for villanova to be on a national stage like this. >> it's a wonderful opportunity to show the world what villanova, the kind of institution it is and what we can do. >> i was excited and we were all screaming and my dad set off

5:08 pm
back of the stadium and the players walk down and we have the whole area roped off and people are excited and there is just this nice panel with fans all the way down leading to the stage over there. you can see there is no shortage of enthusiasm over here. we have signs hand made and signs prepinted and more youngsters and something interesting over here. we have, and this is the first i have seen of it, jay wright's head. hello jay wright's head. >> hello. >> this is nicole. what made you bring it here today. >> was hoping to get on the news and i did. >> you can see everything out here. this jay wright seems as excited at last night. did you see his reaction? he said bang and that is all that needed to be said.

5:11 pm
above. and without clouds, any warmth from the sun during the day radiates into the atmosphere and this allows temperatures to drop quickly. your evening planner tonight at 7:00 still holding on at 40 but down to 39 by 8:00 and then by 11:00, 33 degrees and the second night in a row we have a freeze warning in effect for all of the areas where the growing season has started. we are looking at temperatures dropping down near record lows tonight. you will want to protect the plants and i'll talk specifically how cold it will get in the full accuweather forecast. >> we are keeping an eye on the airport where the plane could arrive any moment now, we are not sure the route the motorcade will take to the stadium but lets get a check of the traffic situation out there.
5:12 pm
>> matt pellman is here. >> they will have a lot of people to greet them on 95 southbound. afternoon volume and sun glare past the airport to ridley park to the blue route and get on the northbound side of 76 and the villanova interchange, the other way on 95 -- this is the northbound side a sluggish pace from the state line on up to 320, because there is an accident at 320. the accident is in the left lane. extra slowing on 95 northbound as you head to the blue route, especially with the bus on the move in the next little while i would avoid 95 through delaware county. in delaware 422 at faulk road a crash taking out two lanes and mantua a crash at ogden station road. we'll check it again and the bus will probably be on the move in the next half hour. lets check out chopper 6 hd
5:13 pm
live at philadelphia international airport we believe this is the plane carrying the national champs villanova wildcats, they are turning obviously taxiing closer to the airport, they are at the private air field. we'll keep an eye on it just in case, we are told they are just landed wheels down in philadelphia. welcome home guys. can't wait to see and a number of buses are on the tarmac waiting to wisk them to wham kam puss and we'll follow it every step of the way.
5:16 pm
5:17 pm
a.m. the fan. sharing enthusiasm around the country. >> let look from sky 6 hd from philadelphia international airport, that is the plane that has the players on it and coach, jay wright we expect him to get off of it any moment now and board buses to take them to campus, the plane has landed. we talk about the thousands of people waiting on the campus of the football field. here is another touch down, they move the ladder closer to the plane, all the players will come off in a moment and the homecoming celebration will get underway and last for about four days, because as we have been telling you friday is a victory parade in center city philadelphia. this is just the beginning of four days of celebrating villanova's national championship. and many people may not realize what makes this a special day not just the win but this team ignored many circumstances the
5:18 pm
odds and history that favored unc chapel hill as a powerhouse team. and villanova has a strong program too, but nonetheless they were able to beat a team that has historically gone to the championship and one again and again and again. we are so proud of them and we are about to see the faces everyone has fallen in love with. all of these young men. and their coach jay wright leading them through a difficult game back and forth and they were able to stay tough after a tie game and in fact it was not a tie into overtime but a buzzer beater, people describe this as an iconic shot we watch for decades. >> a moment in time of kris jenkins that won the game at the buzzer, 77-74 over north carolina. what a run this team had, they last lost the big east title game about three or four weeks ago and then won every game
5:19 pm
pretty much handily, and they were tested by kansas in the elite game. but they won an average of 21 points per game and shot an incredible 58.2%. now we start to see some of the basketball staff and soon we'll see jay wright and the players exit the plane. >> can you imagine what it must have been like on this plane -- >> jubilation and maybe some exhaustion. >> i am guessing they slept on the plane because there is no chance they slept last night. i heard an interview one player post game about a seton hall loss what it crystallized what they had to do to take it to the top. and jay wright was able to take the loss and hurt feelings it was causing for them. we have to have discipline and focus and stick to it, and small increments get better and win
5:20 pm
and it appears to work. >> they made critical mistakes and it cost them the big east title and what would have been a number one seed. they ended up as the number two seed in a tough region with number one overall kansas but it works out for the best. >> there is the coach now and his wife and children. >> there is v sign the villanova victory. why not. the first national championship for him after a decade is so deserving. many of them wearing the championship caps they got after the game and i did read another quote that ryan arcidiacono said he heard one voice over the 75,000 other people cheering in the last few seconds, chris jenkins yelling arch, arch, i'm open. he could have thrown the final
5:21 pm
shot if he wanted to but decided with such maturity to hand it to a guy that was more open and had a better chance. didn't he make the right call. >> jay wright says that is the play they practice every day in practice. >> with ryan shooting -- >> or if ryan is not open he will pass to someone. but kris jenkins is his last option. jenkins threw the ball in and beat his man down the court and was left wide open for the final shot. we'll take a minute to check out again the video to the right of your screen. and there is the water cannon that sara bloomquist mentioned as the plane arrived they were greeted in a celebratory fashion. the way to welcome in a national champion back home into the delaware valley.
5:22 pm
and they get a police escort to the villanova campus, an incredible evening and morning for them and they are so poised and humble. and that is what touches me so much. that they can get this far and have such incredible focus and kindness about it and give unc kudos as well. and say what a great team they were. >> a very respectful team and a good group of young men. you see the players come out and little pieces of the net tied to their net and one had what appeared to be a whole net around his neck. they get to cut down the necks and that is a piece of souvenir they have for a lifetime. this is philadelphia international airport a moment that the team has been preparing months for and seniors preparing four years for and maybe longer and jay wright for more than a decade and it's crystallizing here and we are excited to watch
5:23 pm
this unfold. we'll stay with this as our coverage continues the villanova homecoming. we'll be right back. that's just the way things should be done. that's important to me. my name is glenn, and i'm an independent turkey farmer. 5:27 pm
carolina last night. it has been such -- my bracket they went haywire. but this is so much better because it was in many ways unpredictable but a pleasure to watch. >> they beat two very good seeds in this tournament. kansas being the overall number one and unc last night 77-74. in the final four this team shot 64.9% down in the two games down in houston. this is phenomenal. you get hot at the right time, anybody can win, they were hot store six straight games and you can say for most of the season. this team was 19-5, and a couple of losses earlier to virginia and oklahoma and lost to xavier, but they get to the tournament, got to win six games and win all
5:28 pm
5:30 pm
we saw jay wright getting off ain few players, many are still deplaning and a few students were on board as well. how would you like to be one of those students? >> and a picture live as well on the ground. folks that want to welcome them back. the families are supervisor atlantic and just a moment ago they took the championship trophy off the plane as well. and that was a special moment. those are the buses. there is the trophy. right there. so excited and players are still wearing their championship nes.s >> going out champions and hart will have to decide whether to
5:31 pm
stay in school or not. but they have little pieces of the net. >> what is incredible to me, this is the first team to win a national championship without first round picks since 1987 and jay wright changed his philosophy and picked players that were not necessarily super stars but build it. >> it's an ensemble cast. they have many stars not just one super star. >> lets go live to chad pradelli. they are at the airport and getting on the buses and suspect they are heading towards you in a few moments from now. >> are you talking about last night before, and basically they had a heavy police presence. 220 officers in all.
5:32 pm
and they said that villanova students should be proud and only a few minor incidents. radnor police estimate 10,000 to 15,000 villanova fans packed lancaster avenue after the impressive win. >> it was insane and i didn't know what to do, and everyone was screaming and running so i just ran out. >> despite the bitter cold temperatures the insanity lasted several hours. >> with villanova winning that made it even better because dealing with people that are celebrating is a lot better than dealing with people that are disappointed. >> more than three dozen fans suffered injuries during the celebration and a half dozen of those had to be taken to a local hospital but all the injuries
5:33 pm
are considered minor and most were treated on scene as the university set up its own triage. they had physicians on site to evaluate people and avoid a transport to the er and tying up beds and ambulances. >> most of the students gathered outside here on lancaster avenue, you saw the scene last night outside of kelly's tavern and i talked to merion police, they say there was no injuries or arrests so villanova students should be proud. a major celebration and only a few minor incidents. back to you guys. >> thank you. vernon odom is live for us in center city with preparations that philadelphia officials are making for the big parade for villanova. hey vernon. >> reporter: good evening monica and rick. they started making some preliminary preparations late last week hope that villanova could pull this out. some estimates came out from the

5:35 pm
to win the title that year. city hall says the tab this time for extra services like added police deployment will be picked up by the university. the initial talks started friday before the region for celebration was a real thing. >> the rails will be filled with suburbanites coming down and staying after the parade and doing retail shopping that is not a mall. and we are happy to host large events, the city is about many things but also about large events and ale lot of fun. >> reporter: tonight city hall says that the total cost of friday's parade estimate will be about $22,000. all of which will be paid they say by the university except for some $6500. hail to the champions as they
