garage area and the rest of the home did suffer smoke damage. >> it was like a big boom sound and heard my neighbor screaming. the sound jarred her son awake. this now mangled and burnt dodge durango and swerved and hit the home. >> the vehicle then caught on fire. >> a young man was ejected from the suv, a registered nurse living in the home that caught fire rushed out to give aid but the driver died. his passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. she walked outside to see the home charred and the residents displaced. >> told the officer i was scared and i couldn't believe what i saw it was really scary. it could have happened to my

afternoon after the cold front passed through and showers started north and west at 3:30 in the morning especially south of philadelphia and overall a quarter inch and the sunshine is returning from the north and west and cloud cover is still lingering at the shore and the cloud cover continues to push away as the clear sky takes over tonight. temperature-wise not too bad. 62 in philadelphia and 62 in washington, and notice some cooler air lingering to the north and west. 40s for buffalo and binghamton and pittsburgh 50 degrees, if you are headed to the ballpark for the phillies. 55 first pitch and ninth inning temperatures dropping to 48 and with the wind out of the northwest it will feel on the coolish side. by 11:00 tonight, low 40s north and west and 47 in philadelphia and 47 in millville and the winds are pulling in out of the

northwesterly direction and by tomorrow morning we are below freezing north of town, 35 for philadelphia and at freezing in trenton and 20s in the poconos and here we go again. a freeze warning in effect for the far northwestern suburbs, really north of the pennsylvania turnpike. chester and bucks county and lehigh valley and berks county where temperatures drop below the freezing point. although not as cold as a couple of days ago you'll want to protect the plants. when we come back we'll talk about the soaring temperatures. mayor kenney made two major appointments, one as the head of the fire department and the other the prison system and it made history. vernon odom is live with the details. >> reporter: hello monica. first to the fire department, there is tension and conflict here. it's complicated, tainted by

protested today against proposed state take over of city finances. >> fired up! >> ready to go! >> those demonstrators are specifically against the takeover bill supported by chris christie, it would give the state power to break the state's bargaining agreements and terminate contracts. the speaker says he will not support it. 40,000 verizon workers could walk off the job in less than 24 hours, the cable and line workers are threatening to strike tomorrow morning if verizon does not agree to a new contract. they want them to freeze pensions. there are issues with health care costs and current workers that need to be addressed. workers are without a contract since august. in a little more than three months from now philadelphia will play host to the 2016

national convention, and the city and planning committee hone in on every detail, media outlets got a look at the layout. they hosted a walk through at the wells fargo center ahead of the convention that kicks off on july 25th. convention ceo says that they are on task and on time and on budget. she says the setup here is intended to make everyone at home feel like they are in philadelphia and part of the action. >> our goal this year is to make this the most engaging and inspiring and forward looking convention in history. we want more americans than ever before to feel connected to the experience even if they are thousands of miles away. >> the wells fargo center will be home base for most of the convention activity. the majority of it. the city expects about 50,000

ending speculation he is interested in the presidency this year, some believe he would emerge the party's nominee if there is a contested convention, that could be possible if neither ted cruz or donald trump clinch the amount of delegates needed for the nomination. but he said today he does not want nor will he accept the nomination. north carolina's governor made changes today to the controversial bill covering skim nation against the lgbt community. it overruled the ordinance making people use the bathroom of their gender identity and he wants to restore the right to sue over discrimination but not making changes on the bathroom rules. merrick garland started a week full of meetings on capitol

hill and met with chuck grassley head of the judiciary committee. he says he wants to hold off on the nomination until after the election. in addition with grassley garland plans to meet with other senators this week. now a look at wall street. check it out. up up up. the dow up 165 points. the nasdaq up 39 points. and the s&p up 20 points on the day. vice president, joe biden, will give the commencement address for delaware university this year. the white house announced that the vice president will return to his home state to speak at is the historically black college, it's one of three he will give this year, he will speak at syracuse law school and west point where he gave the address in 2012 and attend notre dame's

above average as you look at the afternoon high temperatures running a degree and a half below normal and the first couple of days were above but the days in blue, including the 3rd, 5 and, 6, 7, 8 and today. below average. it was a wet start to the commute, very different from this evening's commute, where we have sun glare to deal with and not soaking rain showers, that passed through and started to exit the coastline into the early afternoon hours, you can see that clearing line is almost to the shore, the shore is starting to break into a brightening to the sky here. the clear skies in control especially philadelphia north and west. rainfall totals a .25 inch for philadelphia and now we are dealing with the clear sky and the winds out of the northwest

and the numbers drop off, especially north and west of philadelphia, right around the freezing point if not a degree or two below it. that is where we see the freeze overnight tonight with a freeze warning in effect. for the remainder of our viewing area, major cities no threat for freezing there in the mid to upper 30s. low temperatures here, 40s across the board in the morning and into the afternoon we have the northeastly wind and temperatures will pretty much stop in the middle 50s. that is cool for this time of year, another below average day as we get into the middle part of your week on wednesday and then we kick the temperatures back up. with the sunshine and warm temperatures returning you can the only bad thing is the pollen meter and if you have allergies, the next four days it will be on the extremely high side. juniper and maple and alder are your culprits. as we look at the four day at

university to outline the pay gap. women make 79 cents for every dollar a man makes. they highlighted the fact that minority women make even less 57 cents on the dollar. and the volunteer program got a boost today courtesy of wawa. the action cam announced the opening of the wawa volunteer center, it's an update of the existing program, that generating 30,000 service hours in year. wawa made a $5,000 donation today. the phillies are teaming up with philabundance and citizens bank, to make a difference in the community. here today at philabundance in south philadelphia, they kicked off the fans feeding families initiative. citizens bank made the first donation with a $40,000 check.

folks in delaware rolled up their sleeves for a good cause, the action cam was there in new casting, the blood drive is part of the annual delaware week of service. >> more than a dozen peco employees donated their time to help children in the region, the action cam was in conshohocken as they sorted and cleaned donated toys and school supplies, all part of cradles to crayons that helps kids throughout southwestern pennsylvania. police in western new jersey are looking for a carjacking suspect that targeted a 77-year-old woman in a store grocery parking lot. rick williams is live with more on this. >> it hatched in broad daylight in mercer county, the man seen here did not stop with the parking lot attack. coming up tonight at 5:00, the crime spree he is wanted for stretching across the county and

"action news" has brand new pictures showing how first responders rescued a child stuck in waste deep mud stuck in chester creek. the fire department sent us these images, a 12-year-old boy tried to get out of the mud for hours, and rescuer his to use an air knife to get him free. the child was treated at a local hospital. and just finished speaking with sara bloomquist and you'll hear from him tonight at 6:00. bill cosby's attorney is trying to get the criminal charges against him thrown out. lawyers have filed an appeal with the pennsylvania supreme court, they want to overturn the ruling that the sex assault again cosby and andrea constand can move forward. and a judge in massachusetts

ruled that cosby's wife camille must finish her deposition. and they accuse cosby of sexually assaulting them decades ago. a family is on a mission to solve a theft. as they were mourning a death someone stole her grandmother's wedding ring off her finger in the casket. they recorded the crime in broad daylight. two of the victim's granddaughters are out to find the culprit and they posted this story on facebook. >> in the midst of trying to get ready and eating and taking care of that, all of these messages are coming in -- >> well, as you might guess the story is going viral on social media and police are also investigating and hoping the exposure will lead to an arrest and get the ring back for the

family. there is no shortage of melt downs at airports, tensions can get high during travel but one woman's full blown temper tantrum at an american airlines desk is going viral. a la guardia flight was going on 12 hours and to signs of a flight. the melt down mom was trying to get her family to miami and feared they would not make their disney cruise, cops were called in to keep order but she was the most vocal. >> if there is no flights just say there is no flights -- >> i'm getting everyone's name here -- >> you are all going to pay for the disney cruise and everything else here. >> a long story short the airport was shut down because of strong winds and the flight was

diverted here to philly and by the time they got it up to la guardia the crew worked too many hours to fly. the good news is the woman and her kids made it to the disney cruise before it sailed. and it is the anonymous letter from a letter that sent one fuming mother in the may fair section to facebook not just air out the hateful hand written note she received but to raise awareness about autism. >> bonnie is the mother of three and her youngest son ryan is autistic. their neighbor was upset because they could not get fresh air because of the child. >> they started out by calling the boy a brat and goes as far as to call the child an r word. >> the screaming and carrying on has to stop nobody wantses to hear him act like a wild animal

and it's utterly nerve-racking and it's scaring my normal children. the neighbor goes on to suggest, that bonnie, his mom, should give him some old fashion discipline sometimes and he will behave. >> angry, upset and emotional, bonnie posted the letter and her response, she has no idea which nasty neighbor penned the note but is posting it to educate people. never judge people because they don't know what they are going through. the silver lining is that after bonnie posted it, ryan, the cute little 3-year-old guy here, got calls for some play dates. >> some awful, awful person wrote the letter. >> i think they'll find them pretty quickly. lets gets another check of the roads right now. lets go to matt pellman in the traffic center.

>> it's up and down this afternoon since last we spoke a crash happened on the vine street expressway westbound approaching the schuylkill and it cleared out quickly and the westbound delay thinned out nicely and eastbound that jam is starting to form as you come away from the schuylkill and head out to 95 and of course that joins up with the delays on 95 itself. north of the vine street expressway, 13th street remains closed in callow hill involving this truck that brought down a pole, 13th is shut down and stay on broad street. we told you a bit ago about the accident in north philadelphia involving the school bus along diamond at van pelt involving two students, it's a good intersection to stay away from. and robert earths near wissahickon is jammed all afternoon coming off the schuylkill to roberts avenue,
