hours. >> donald trump's convention. he wants a little showbit. iz from the podium. who will become the first speaker? his wife melania will gave her headlining speech tonight. but the atmosphere is tense. security tighter than it's ever been around a convention. you see barricades all across the city of cleveland. 500 cleveland police officers, thousands more from across the country are on duty here. there have been some protests already, all peaceful so far but the city is on the highest alert. it is fitting perhaps that tonight's theme, make america safe again. >> we'll have much more on that in a moment. we want to get to the tragedy in baton rouge. three police officers killed in a deadly assault. three more injured after a gunman attacked them at a basis intersection. terrifying witnesses capturing it on cell phone video before the shooter was taken down. amy robach on the scene for us in louisiana with the latest. good morning, amy. >> that's right, good morning,

robin. the headline of the advocate in baton rouge says it all, senseless. the carnage began here behind me after police officers responded to a 911 call about a suspicious-looking man carrying guns. when those baton rouge officers arrived they were targeted, shot and three of them killed. at 8:44, the first shots rang out. >> shots fired. officer down. >> reporter: just two moments earlier baton rouge police scrambled to this busy intersection after receiving a 911 call about a man dressed all in black armed with a rifle and a semiautomatic pistol. when officers arrived the suspect, 29-year-old former marine, gavin long began to fire. >> i got scared. i was shaken up. >> reporter: long then moved to a nearby car wash where his rampage continued. >> i'm hit. i'm by the car wash. >> it was scary, like it really scared me.

>> reporter: shaar main adams recorded it. >> he ended up going around to the back of the car and the officer literally on our driver's side of the car shooting over us. i was actually kind of waiting for a bullet to hit me. it was -- the bullets were that close. >> reporter: adams' attorney says she's not an activist but turned it on to record the moment in case it was her last. >> this is a war and she was caught in a war zone, an officer was shooting over her car to try to stop something bad that was happening. >> reporter: relations between the police and citizens in this city have been at a broiling point since the july 5th death of alton sterling. law enforcement on high alert since the killing of five police officers in dallas two days later. police killed long but long left three officers wounded and three

dead, 32-year-old montrell jackson and 41-year-old matthew gerald of the bataclan theatre police department and sheriff deputy brad garafola, 45 years old. >> it's unjustifiable. the violence, the hatred just has to stop. >> reporter: one of those officer, 32-year-old montrell jackson had just posted something on facebook. he was talking about the difficulties black police officers face. in that post he wrote, i love this city but i wonder if this city loves me. these are trying times. please don't let hate infect your heart. robin. >> all right, amy, thank you very much. we'll get back to you in baton rouge in a moment. we want to talk to the mayor of baton rouge, kip holden, who joins us this morning and, mayor holden, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with your entire city and the families of the three officers killed and those that were injured. can you tell us, mayor, how the wounded officers are doing this morning? >> well, they are doing fine

considering. there's still one officer listed in extremely critical condition. i have not had an update on him as today. but i can tell you that it's still touch and go for that officer. >> and the prayers are still going out for him and for his family. can you tell us where the investigation stands right now and the possible motivation of the gunman? >> well, virtually they've done some background on the person that did the shootings. there are different theories coming out. i will leave that to our law enforcement to put all of those together. i would like to say that every agency in the united states is on board from the fbi, the atf, state police, city police, baton rouge and sheriff's office, all of these agencies are working together to get to the bottom of what actually happened yesterday morning. >> speculation earlier yesterday said there may be one or two other people involved in trying to help the person who ended up dead. but now that speculation is waning somewhat but not ruling

out anything because of the magnitude of what happened. >> mayor holden, i don't have to tell you all that your city has been through with the killing of alton sterling by police officers and then what happened yesterday. how is your city coping, sir? >> the sterling family has been tremendous in light of their tragedy by coming out and telling people straight out, look, we are not here for violence. we don't want protests. we don't want people doing the things we see on tv because we've been through that and they're calling for unity in the community. unfortunately, there are some people who try to take advantage of this but overwhelmingly that's a small minority and i can tell you this, baton rouge is great. i was thinking this morning what can you really say and went back to the scripture of job and all the tragedies but job say yay though you slay me i will rise again. yay we're going through tough times baton rougers will rise again. >> it's great to hear what the

sterling family in light of what they're going through in stopping this. there is a thought what happened in baton rouge and dallas with the employs shootings, law enforcement agencies across the country are on high alert and are being targeted. do you believe that? >> these law enforcement people across the country should be on alert. make sure that they have everything in order in terms of what the police officers need because every day these first responders are out there on our behalf and i say now is our time to step up on behalf of the first responders. >> what is your final message as we begin a new week here, what is your message for the country, mayor holden? >> my message is, tell people in law enforcement and others that you love them every day. unfortunately, yesterday i had the bad experience of going into a hospital room and seeing the child of one of the officers that was slain and that little girl said this, i know my daddy is not dead, my daddy is going

to come home tonight, that young girl seeing what she said and your heart basically in your hands and all kinds of emotions going through your stomach, make sure we embrace them, let them know we love them and appreciate what they're doing. >> mayor kip holden, thank you very much. again our thoughts and prayers to everyone there in baton rouge. be well. thank you, sir. >> thank you and god bless you. what he said about the little girl said just grabs your heart. >> that mayor showing grace and strength in the face of this. more on the gunman a military veteran who posted threatening videos may have had ties to militant groups. brian ross has the latest. >> convos with cosmo. >> reporter: using the pseudonym cosmo gavin long posted this video online the day after the five police officers in dallas were shot and killed. >> it's a time for peace but it's a time for war and most of the times when you want peace you got to go to war.

>> reporter: overnight police and the fbi were at the home of long in kansas city, missouri, where neighbors described him as a quiet man, divorced with children. government documents showed long was a military veteran who served five years in the marines including tours in japan and iraq. and police say the sunday morning ambush showed signs of being well planned. >> he had a mask on. >> one subject all black carrying an ar. >> reporter: federal authorities saying the fbi is looking into whether long had ties into the group called the moorish science temple of america which believes black americans are not u.s. sit tens and owe the government no loyalty. law enforcement in baton rouge had been put on alert by the fbi warning in this bulletin that multiple groups are calling for or planning riots and/or violence against law enforcement in baton rouge and shreveport, louisiana. >> these threats are very viable

and very real. >> reporter: a senior u.s. official told abc news the fbi has now been closely watching a group called the new black panther party. a small group of the new black panther party showed up in baton rouge last week, some carrying weapons but insisting they did not intend to carry out violence. >> the people wanted us here. we want to be here and that's why we're here. the moorish science temple told abc news this morning it has no connects at all with mr. long and do not endorse his -- what he did in the attack. authorities say whatever the precise motive long drove to baton rouge in a rental car from kansas city and carried out his ambush on what was his 29th birthday, robin. >> all right, brian, thank you very much. as you know, this latest police attack comes on the heels of the republican convention getting under way here in cleveland. thousands of officers on high alert as protesters gather. abc's pierre thomas has more on the city on edge and it is very apparent as soon as you hit the

his adult children speaking on other nights and speaking of the trump kids donald trump said in that recent interview he considered his daughter ivanka as a running mate. >> she turns 35 i think in late october just in time. let's talk to the former speaker of the house. finalist for vice president as well. disappointing you weren't picked? >> no, we had a long talk about it last week and i thought it made sense if your job was to reassure the republican party and bring back in the republi n republicans, mike pence will do a much better job. >> to win you said he has to be more like ronald reagan than barry goldwater. what does that mean for this week? >> part of it was to pick mike pence. figure out how to send out to the speaker ryans of the world that there is a middle ground here, there's a way to work together and anythings we can do together. i can tell you last week in the various platform committee rules committee, et cetera, the

republican national committee members who are the regulars and the trump people were arm in arm in beating back the never -- >> you don't expect real disruptions. >> there may be noise but i think you have to be a little crazy to think you can take on a guy that carried 37 states and got the most votes of anybody. now you'll come in here and somehow change it all? >> he did crush the competition but our new poll out shows right now 60% of the american public think he's unqualified to be president. how do you overcome that number? >> you have to behave like you're qualified. well, there are two things as you know because politicians always, two sides. one is they have to conclude he's at least an adequate risk otherwise you're going to be in the goldwater zone. the other compared to who? the more hillary carries -- taking on water and the more problems she runs into, the more it becomes a binary choice. >> we see donald trump. effective at labeling his opponents. we got that.

how about on the other side you talk about, what side of himself does he have to show. >> he ought to do two things. he will do one, the speeches this week, the speeches by his kid, the speeches by people who work with him, you're going to get a much fuller sense of this guy, what he's achieved. how he's done it. i think his speech has to be in many ways a visionary speech on thursday night. and the party has to lead with relative unity. >> you talk about the unity but how much does it hurt? you're a former speaker. you're here. you don't see either of the former president, not seeing mitt romney, john mccain, most of the senate candidates in tight races. how much does that hurt. >> i don't think it matters much. the reason people nominated donald trump is they weren't happy and frankly the bushes are behaving i think childishly. >> childishly. >> childishly. jeb lost. get over it. i mean the fact is this republican party has been awfully good to the bushes. showing remarkable -- mitt romney, romney refused to

of those three police officers. hard to believe this was a brutal crime scene less than 24 hours ago. it all happened around 8:40 a.m. on sunday when police responded to that 911 call that a man dressed in all black walking around a busy intersection was armed with two weapons, well, that suspect gavin long of kansas city, missouri, a former marine yesterday was his 29th birthday and when police confronted long a shoot-out lasting less than ten minutes ensued but in the end three officers were killed. three others wounded and the suspect dead. police here plan to hold an update in just a few hours around 1 p.m. local time. in the meantime, people are trying to come to grips with this tragedy, of course, it's going to be a long process as the people here of baton rouge and, frankly, the people of the united states try to find a way to unite. robin, george, back to you. >> all right, there, amy. gooed to have you there for us in baton rouge and we'll be back to you in just a little bit. we are here in cleveland for the republican national convention, the theme today,

naked on a yacht but dismisses any suggestions that some of those photographs might be unbecoming of a first lady. >> i think people will always judge. that's part of the job that i was doing, i was very successful model and i did some photo shoots. >> i will say this, if i'm lucky enough to win the public will be so lucky to have melania as the first lady. she will be so beautiful and elegant and good from the heart. >> reporter: their 2005 wedding at trump's palm beach estate was a lavish affair. the clintons among the guests. now she has her own line of jewelry on qvc and dabbled in tv commercials like this affleck ad. and yet despite her preference for staying out of the political limelight, it's getting harder to stay in the background. >> you know, melania said she was never afraid of what the campaign would bring, that she doesn't like to live her life in fear and even though there were, you know, really negative reactions to his candidacy right out of the gate she really was

able to just block it out and try to focus on her day-to-day life. >> reporter: she was asked what kind of first lady she would be and she said in her own words very traditional like betty ford or jackie kennedy. >> we're waiting to see whether donald will hear her speech. don't surprise if he pops out of the shadows himself. >> we will not be surprised. matthew dowd matthew dowd ad an. that stage, melania trump tonight, how important the trump family and getting his message across, donna? >> first of all, they know him and can talk about donald trump as a father, as a man, as, of course, as her husband, she gets to paint the portrait that we don't see. she gets to humanize him, tell us about some fun times with donald trump. i mean donald trump is this tall, big, you know, tough guy. but, you know, soften him up.

speak to mlg, speak to america about the man she knows and fell in love with. >> matt, how much of this really plays with voters? the candidate's family. >> i think it's become very important. over the last 20 or 25 years who the first lady is and who the family has become a big part of the equation. it used to be they just voted on the candidate, just the one perch, now it's i'm going to make a decision with the family. laura bush and michelle obama it helped with. voters want to see the whole picture and what it's going to be like in the white house. >> the whole picture and, donna, you alluded to this, i mean, part of what has been going against trump is the issue of his character. and you're alluding to the fact this is what his family really will be able to step up and show a different side. >> they can also give us some insights in terms of his demeanor at home. what he's like when he's, you know, on the golf course. what he's like on a sunday afternoon, watching football. i think she has an incredible story.

she's an immigrant. if donald trump is elected, of course, and i'm going to do everything i can to make sure that doesn't happen but if he's elected she will be the second first lady who was not born in the united states so i think she brings a unique perspective. she's smart. she reads a lot. she often tells him don't tweet, tone it down, so maybe she'll tell us a little bit about that. >> and i think it's a fascinating thing because what you have basically is a traditional family dynamic with a very untraditional man, donald trump is very untraditional. very out of the mainstream. not tip challenge of a presidential candidate but has a dynamic of a family that seems very traditional. >> right. >> you're not going to give me a sports analogy in the "q" and no sports analogy to all of this. >> there is no lebrons -- i can't top that. >> this is my republican red. i got the republican red. >> always stirring it up.

her naked two days ago changes and i was, oh, my god, you are my body icon. she's never been more on fire. khloe recently posted a video of herself working out in a sauna suit with her trainer. >> that was so hard today but we made it back safe and want you to know. >> reporter: 35-year-old kim reveals she's trimmed down through the atkins 40 plan eating 1800 calories a day including a lot of fish and turkey. in her quest to lose weight kim emphasizes that food goes hand in hand with fitness. i think dieting is so important to weight loss whereas i didn't really ever think that before. both kim and khloe prove it takes a lot to keep up with these kardashians. kim says the great thing about her diet is it doesn't leave her feeling deprived and she still enjoys snacks like trail mix with m&ms and peanuts which sounds amazing right now. >> thank you, sara. joining us to talk about it is abc news chief women's health correspondent dr. jen ashton. author of the new book "eat

this, not that when you're expecting" so what is your advice on diet and weight loss while you're pregnant and after pregnancy. >> this is one of the hottest topics because we know it's not okay to gain 70 pounds during ail pregnancy. not recommended. there are risks for mother and baby. they include an increase in inflammation for both mom and fetus and then for the offspring metabolic programming problems, blood pressure, the list goes on and on. this is why i wrote the book to help women avoid this situation and they should be eating for you, not for two. >> some say you can't help it, 70 pounds is not something they wanted to gain. some women say it's a free for all. >> not medically ideal. >> not yuichiro miura at all. what do you think about this sauna suit. >> it's not the key to weight loss and i don't think it's safe. there are risks involved. all you're taking off there is water weight.

find what the funny is there for you, try to find that release because the truth is you'd be crying every day if you weren't laughing. what is happening just in this campaign alone i wouldn't be shocked if republicans aren't trying to make jokes about it because they're losing the party and the country going into disarray. you have to find a reason to laugh. it is madness and you have to point out the madness. >> you will try something new. live every night after the convention. >> live on the thursdays after the speeches so that will be cool. i don't like to go live every single night because i think sometimes a bit of measure is nice. you know, i don't want to have a hot take or a show that comes up. what do you think live? i think what just happened now, i see so much of that on the thus and go sometimes it's nice to go let me think about it. spend a day and give you my opinion. >> but it is the first late night take on it. >> yep. >> and, you know, you have -- when we saw in chris connelly's piece, a lot are doing late night. any pressure being the first one up. >> i don't think so. we're here in cleveland for a reason.

we're experiencing this and storm chasers but we chase jokes and this is going to be one of 9 biggest joke stages in the country. it's a dangerous joke but a joke nonetheless. that's why we're here so i think all of the pressure goes away because we're in cleveland experiencing it just like you are. >> how do you put your stand on it and find the funny but you're trying to make some points. >> yes. well, you try to make sense of it. that's what you're trying to do. trying to point out the fallacies and the madness, i mean everything -- you know, every single day becomes a new highlight. let's look at trump's vp announcement which was trump announcing himself as vp. he genuinely wanted to announce himself and unfortunately had to say pence and look at that entire speech of the he basically sat there denouncing everything pence believed in -- how is this normal? how is nobody stopping everyone going this is not a normal campaign? these are not normal things. >> i guess we learned he almost picked his daughter. >> i know. we heard that. >> i would have put money on that had you asked me that.

"avatar" and guardians of the galaxy." what is your fascination with these futuristic space galaxy movies. >> i was raised by a mom who is a little sci-fi buff and my sisters and i were not the conventional little girls always into the infinite possibilities that the universe may offer and that kept me always so curious about space. >> well you mentioned little girls. so i would like to bring out our mini uhura. she is a number one fan of yours. her name is camilla. hi, camilla. will you come out? i understand you have a question for our friend zoe.
