culprits are behind two other home burglaries and more than two dozen car thefts. "action news" reporter jeanette reyes is live at bensalem police tonight. jeanette? >> reporter: well, jim, these -- bensalem township police say these two suspects allegedly confessed to breaking into nearly three dozen cars and homes tonight "action news" talked exclusively to the victim here police say she helped them crack this case wide open. it was 2:30 in the morning when michele david had trouble falling asleep. she went to her garage to grab a book only to come back inside and see the silhouette of a man standing near her front door. she reacted instinctively. >> the only thing i could think about at that time was my kids were upstairs. so i went into mama bear mode and just was like, "get out of my house!" >> reporter: police quickly responded and found 18-year-old james woodman hiding in a nearby bush. these two stolen minivans were

also recovered. a 17-year-old suspect was found hiding inside one of them. but it was just the beginning of a long night for police as they uncovered what would turn out to be a string of thefts. >> further investigation revealed that these guys had been on tear all night. it appears that they went into probably about three dozen vehicles. >> reporter: stashed in the minivans police found cell phones, car chargers, cameras, even a laptop and some change. and shortly after our interview, the lieutenant learned of yet another vehicle that was recovered, a ford f-250. the crimes themselves were bold but easy to carry out. the vast majority of the cars and homes broken into were unlocked. >> our advice would be lock your doors. it is a deterrent. a lot of the times they don't want to break glass because it makes noise. >> reporter: though david's home was one of two left unlocked, there is one important thing others can learn from her. >> the one thing the homeowner did, she made noise. she scared the individual off. he didn't want to be caught. he fled. we don't want a situation where

someone tries to actually physically confront someone and get into a -- you know, an assault situation or worse. >> reporter: and we're obviously talking about victims here. there bla be some -- may be some in neighboring municipalities. if you believe you may be a victim of these thefts, encourage police. we have all that information on our website at 6abc.com. reporting in bensalem township, jeanette reyes, "channel 6 action news." jim? >> thank you. what a mess it was overnight on i-95 in delaware. a truck spilled a rouge load of unstamped pennies, 40,000 pounds' worth, when the vehicle overturned. "action news" reporter sarah bloomquist is live on 95 in new castle. sarah, how did it happen? and how did they get all that copper -- well, actually copper-plated zinc, cleaned up from the roadway? >> reporter: jim, the driver simply lost control, hit the concrete barrier. the tractor-trailer overturned

spilling all those pennies onto the highway. they vacuumed most of them up, but it took much longer than anybody anticipated. the good news, all lanes i-95 northbound are back open tonight. crews spent the day sweeping and vacuuming up the unstamped pennies from i-95 as motorists shared horror stories about the really rough morning commute and just how long it took to get to work today. >> i was coming across the traffic kept getting heavier and heavier. i ran to a standstill. as i ways approaching this road, i noticed nothing was going anywhere. >> it takes about 12 to 15 minutes every morning. this morning it took me 2 1/2 hours. >> reporter: just before 2:00 a.m., the tractor-trailer bound for the u.s. mint collided with the concrete barrier and flipped over spilling the blank pennies all over the road. as gas and oil leaked out, the truck burst into flames. the driver was able to crawl from the vehicle after suffering only minor injuries. then the work began to clear the pennies from the road.

a 23-year-old man. he has injuries to his face, but he is expected to be okay. tips made through delaware crimestopers may be eligible for a reward of up to $10,000. a camden county sheriff's deputy appears to be in trouble with the law tonight because he allegedly pointed a gun at a 25-year-old female motorist in philadelphia. we get that full story from "action news" reporter gray hall. >> reporter: camden county sheriff's officer brian mcdonald is facing some serious allegations of road rage. pennsylvania state police say a woman accused the officer of pointing a gun at her while traveling along this stretch of 95 at the vine street expressway august 1st. camden county spokesperson is asking the public not to rush to judgment. >> right now we only have aldwagses. so we're waiting to see how -- you know, how serious they are and how legitimate they are. >> reporter: we tried to track down officer mcdonald for comment, but when we showed up to an address listed as his home, no one answered. state police say the victim

claims the off-duty officer cut her off for what she claims was no apparent reason. the two eventually were driving side by side, and that's when the a unfolded. the 25-year-old victim claims the officer pointed a gun at her. she then showed him her phone, perhaps to alert him that she was going to report him. she then tells police, mcdonald exited the highway but not before she was able to get his license plate and reported the incident to authorities. >> this is not a common thing, and ultimately, like i said, we want to make sure that we let this -- this whole process play out and make an informed decision and be thoughtful about this before we jump to any conclusions. >> reporter: mcdonald turned himself in just yesterday and has been suspended from the camden county sheriff's office pending the outcome of an investigation. we're working with our law enforcement partners. we're -- we want to find out as much as possible and then make decisions based on that -- you know, on that information. >> reporter: tonight we are learning a bit more about that police officer accused in this incident. we can tell you that he's been

on the force since 2012. also we're told he has a clean record. he has hired an attorney. a court date has been scheduled for october. reporting from wynnefield heights, gray hall, "channel 6 action news." jury selection got underway today in the trial involving bridge-gate. more than 200 perspective jurors were expected in federal court in newark, new jersey, today. two former aides of governor christie were indicted last year on charges that they oorpgstrated traffic jams near the george washington bridge as a political payback against the mayor of ft. lee. christie has not been charged but could be subpoenaed to testify about the plot. opening statements are set for september 19th. philadelphia city council was back in chambers today for the first time since the summer break. but the big story here might have nothing to do with council's agenda today. live at city hall tonight, "action news" reporter vernon odom. vernon, what's the story here? >> reporter: jim, all eyes today

students suffered butches and bruises when a car collided with a school bus this afternoon. crash happened at 42nd and girard on the parkside section of philadelphia. police say the bus was t-boned. officials sayin to of the injuries appears to be life threatening. police have not said what school the students attend. both philadelphia public and archdiocesan schools have made the decision to close at noon tomorrow. athletic events have also been canceled for tomorrow and saturday. the heat forced the trenton school district to let students go at lunchtime today. not all schools with air-conditioning so officials didn't want students getting sick in the sweltering heat. some of septa's most dependent riders received their new key to use the transit system today. elected representatives hosted this event in west philadelphia to help senior citizens get their new septa key card. the cards will essentially replace weekly and monthly passes. senior citizens who ride at deeply discounted or free fares have a photo on their cards to avoid any chance of fraud. also in philadelphia, a living art exhibit is transforming a portion of the historic pier on the delaware river. world famous artist hamilton debuted her work titled

"habitus" this morning. it was inspired by cloth-making and it features billowing curtains and live models working with fabrics. for over 30 years, hamilton has used various mediums to transformer large architectural spaces and that's what she's doing along the pier in philadelphia.

and pretty rare for this time of year to be that hot. right now it still feels like 99 in philadelphia. 101 in trenton. upper 90s for the majority of the area, the exception right along the immediate shore with the sea breeze today, stayed in the mid and upper 80s. there's the front to the north, draping in albany, north of williamsport and arcing its way north of pittsburgh. this is going to continue to sink from the south to the east. but then we put on the brakes before it hits the poconos tomorrow afternoon. so without it blasting through the region, you're not going to see much in the way of a change in what we felt today and tomorrow. so we're muggy tonight. we're only dropping to 78 for low in philadelphia. low to mid-70s everywhere. maybe a spotty thunderstorm in those far northern areas late in the night. and then for friday, there's the front just to the north, 94 degrees tomorrow in the city. so similar to today with a heat index around 100 degrees. and late in the day, there could be a thunderstorm inñi the poconos, lehigh valley, or berks
