let's go live to "action news" reporter john rawlins live in linden new jersey where the search for that bombing suspect came to an end this morning. john. >> reporter: hi, monica. well, the mayor here says the call about a vagrant came in about 10:30. the suspect was arrested but that came after a gun fight. the suspect was wounded. two police officers also hit by gunfire, one in the vest, the other in the head from a ricochet bullet. shortly after 7:30 this morning authorities released this picture of ahmad rahami. four hours later the 28-year-old terror suspect was on the ground after a shootout with police wounded, dazed but looking about. >> all of a sudden i just saw the two officers running behind their doors and then started shooting. >> reporter: the suspect capture triggered not about a call about a fugitive but about a sleeping vagrant in a doorway. an officer arrived. >> he ohio -- attempted to wake the individual.

within seconds that individual began firing and thank god our officer had his vest on. >> reporter: overnight a backpack with expose sieve material was discovered near the elizabeth train station but unlike other devices tied to the suspect lacking something. >> they had no timers no cell phone and no electronic devices. speculation leads that it could have been a hatefully thrown away in that location. >> reporter: that location only blocks away from the suspect's home above the family business a fried chicken shop. fbi agents searched the building and towed cars as residents connected the suspect's photo to the oldest son at the store. >> i was like wait, that's the guy that works there. that's the son. and i was like what? that's crazyism regulars say the suspect never showed signs of radicalization just a guy who might flirt with female customers or talk about cars. >> nice people. i would never suspect anything like this. >> reporter: and when you saw the suspect here today did you recognize him. >> yeah. it blew my mind. >> reporter: he's often in there. >> often. every day he's in there behind the counterrism behind the counter.

>> y he's the one who serves us. >> reporter: well, the customers say that the family had operated the shop for at least 10 years maybe as long as 15 years. there had been some code enforcement issues between the shop and the city of elizabeth. the city says that the hours of operation of the shop sometimes they would operate all night long and generate noise complaints. then the family counter sued the city apparently saying that they were discriminated against because they are muslims. live in linden, john rawlins channel6 "action news." monica. >> thank you john. new york mayor bill deblasio called saturday's attack in the city's chelsea section there an attack of terror. the pressure cooker bomb wounded 29 people none seriously and with rahami's arrest investigators say there are no indications there are more suspects. five people pulled over in a vehicle associated with rahami but questioned and rehe leased. one was one of rahami's relatives in the car. a large turnout for a charity 5k race in seaside

park ocean county turned outer to be a fortunate twist of fate. the delayed start meant runners were not on the course when that pipe bomb exploded in a trash can saturday morning. "action news" reporter walter perez spoke to the race organizer today. >> reporter: frank costello admits he was overwhelmed by the number of people who showed up to take part in the second annual semper fi 5k benefiting marines and sailors wounded in action. >> we flu we were going to have a big turnout but not quite as big as we had and the lines were so long we could not get them all registered. >> reporter: as a result frank delayed the start of the race. a twist of fate that likely saved lives because the bomb detonated inside a garbage can last saturday morning was a few feet away from the path of the race. >> had the race gone off in time the 5k would have been rider there where the bomb went off. >> reporter: one of the few people nearby was a race official stationed a short distance from where the explosion occurred. >> he turned around to walk back and the bomb went off two and a half blocks away so he

saw it go off in smoke. >> reporter: fortunately no injuries were reported in the wake of that blast but local officials moved quickly to ensure the runners' safety. >> we need to shut down this run. shut down this run. >> reporter: we spoke with neighbors here who say they never heard anything quite like it. gene lives half a block away from where it happened. >> like it sounded like if you dropped a section of the building onto the street, it was just one loud boom and vibration. >> reporter: meanwhile frank costello says that while this incident frightened him at first now he feels inspired to continue his mission to support the men and women who serve in the's military. >> makes you want to come back bigger and stronger. >> reporter: and so semper fi will definitely be held next year and hopefully costello says another event will be held in between to make up for what happened this past saturday. reporting from seaside park new jersey walter perez channel6 "action news". >> with disruptions along the northeast corridor because of the situation in elizabeth transit police were out in

force this morning at 30th street station in philadelphia. septa also increased k-9 patrols and its police presence on its platforms. officials say there is no known threat to philadelphia but that people of course need to be alert. and also a always, if you see something, please say something. president barack obama was in new york today for a previously scheduled meeting of the un general assembly. he called on americans not to give in to fear. >> moments like this i think it's important to remember what terrorists and violent extremists are trying to do. they are trying to hurt innocent people but they also want to inspire fear in all of us. we all have a role to play as citizens in making sure that we don't succumb to that fear. and there's no better example of that than the people of new york and new jersey. >> and world news tonight with david muir will have more on today's developments next at 6:30 right after "action news."

to the national constitution center for the liberty medal ceremony that will start about 7 o'clock tonight and of course the recipient is the civil rights icon congress plan john lewis. i did have a chance to sit down with him just a few moments ago and to talk with him is really -- he's a walking history book as far as civil rights is that concerned. quite frankly. he marched with martin luther king jr., he staged so many sit ins and protests along the way even though being beaten and bloodied and he says tonight when he receives the medal he will continue to emphasize protests. as long as it's done nonviolently he says. >> i happen to believe that the philosophy and the discipline of nonviolence is one of those immutable principles that you not deviate from. if you want to build a beloved community as dr. king would say where we recognize the dignity and worth of every human being you must accept the way of nonviolence as a way of life, as a a way of

living and lay down the burden of hate. dr. king would say hate is too heavy a burden to bear. just love everybody. i was arrested 40 times during the 60's. and since i've been in congress, another five times. probably going get arrested again for something. beaten and left bloody and unconscious but i never hate. it's the way of love, the way is better. it will work. if you want to move to that sense of community, we got to come together as one people, as one family living in the same house, not just american house, but the world house. >> just part of the message from congressman lewis when he receives the liberty medal in just a few moments from now he says he will also have a special message for the millennials, the yes you know people in telling them why it's important to vote in this upcoming presidential election

>> meteorologist cecily tynan here. the last few days summer going to be warm. >> yes they are. we're beginning to get the rain out of here. we need the rain and we he got some of it and some areas actually got too much. storm tracker6 live double scan showing that that rain is continuing to push off shore. it's all over the i-95 corridor in areas north and west but we do have some more showers moving into cape may county. they're losing a lot of their gust tow but light showers across tuckahoe he sea isle city cape may rolling up the garden state parkway and the accuweather highlights will show that you yes, this is much needed rain. philadelphia so far this month until today we had less than a half inch of rain. today 1.29. west cape may close to 5-inches of rain. caused localized flooding. estell manor about 3-inches, harrington three and a half

hamburg 3-inches of rain. the problem is that the atmosphere is very moist and with that in a lot of ground level moisture, a lot of fog could be developing overnight so this means there is a potential for some morning delays, a good idea to allow extra time, watch "action news" beginning at 4:30 in the morning. some of that fog could be dense. temperature-wise, it was cool today. 71 degrees currently down in from a high of 76. coolest day of three months. it's close to normal. north high is 77. allentown 74. cape may 71 and wilmington 72. satellite6 along with action radar showing this front is slow mover. most of that rain has moved along. the problem though is that the clouds are going to be very stubborn. tonight clouds with again some fog. philadelphia relatively warm night, 70 degrees. allentown 63. cape may 71. and tomorrow what you get really depends on location. future tracker is showing at temperature clock really philadelphia areas to the north some breaks of sunshine

but right along the coast a few scattered showers. then really will continue as we head through the day. more clouds to the south and east. more sunshine to the north and west and then temperatures rebounding back into the 80's. wednesday this very broad area of high pressure moves right over us and that is going to bring us loads of sunshine. the last official day of summer and it's going to feel like it. temperatures 10 degrees above average and actually it will be warming up as we heads through the week. so, the exclusive accuweather 7-day forecast tomorrow morning fog, some sunshine by the afternoon, again more on that sunshine to the northwest, a high of 84 degrees. wednesday sunshine is back. it's a warm day, 86 degrees. and thursday the autumnal equinox at 10:21 in the morning, fall arriving but we keep that summer feeling. 86 degrees and friday the first full day of fall, it's going to be very warm. it will be muggy with a high of 88 degrees. but then we he transition as we head through the weekend. saturday temple homecoming.
