still dealing with the tail end of the storm and in miami where the outer bands are coming to shore ahead of what could be a destructive night. marcy gonzales is along the coast in new smyrna beach. >> reporter: with the powerful winds and threat of severe flooding hurricane matthew is moving towards florida. a category 4 storm, the most powerful hurricane to hit the u.s. in more than a decade. >> evacuate, evacuate, evacuate. >> orders are in place for 2.5 million people from here to the carolinas. >> it looks like it's going to be bad. it's best to get off the island. >> after seeing the destruction left behind in the caribbean. battering the bahamas and killing more than 100 people in

haiti. in what officials call the worst humanitarian crisis since the 2012 earthquake. store shelves are left empty and businesses are boarded up from miami to up the coast inland millions are bracing for matthew and what the national hurricane says that could be disasterous impacts. >> president obama declared a state of emergency and officials warn that 2.5 million people could lose electricity once the storm hits late tonight. marcy gonzales, channel 6 "action news." >> the storm is shaping up to miss our region completely but given its size and strength it will have serious affects far beyond florida. adam joseph is at the big board. >> i am reading a lot about this storm. this is a near worst case scenario for florida. >> something we have never seen in history because of the track it takes hugging the coastline

affecting many different cities in florida, and georgia and south carolina. it's a category 4 hurricane, winds sustained 140 miles per hour expected to strengthen even more before it hits land. we can see the eye moving there through the bahamas. we'll close in closer here and you can clearly see the eye wall and some of the feeder bands now starting to wrap in on the western side of the center of matthew. winds now just off of west palm beach, north-northeast 36 miles per hour gusting to 44 only to increase in intensity as the bands get more intense as the eye wall closes in to the shore line. it is moving to the northwest at 14 miles per hour. expected to make landfall and scrape the coast near cape canaveral and daytona beach and jacksonville. hitting as a category 4 hurricane and near a category 5 possibly.

and the loop deloop to south carolina and aiming back to miami possibly as a tropical storm in the middle of next week. in addition to the fresh water as well as the wind. we expect 7 to 11 foot storm surge from savannah to mel born. you can expect a rise in water from 7 to 11 feet on top of high tide. this is catastrophic for the coastline, category 4 you can expect the well built homes to lose their walls and roofs. and trees stripped bear of their leaves. and power outages for a month. we'll have updates on the latest from the hurricane center. >> thank you. >> hurricane matthew already wreaking havoc on travel, airports in the south are already shutting down leading to thousands of canceled flights. john rawlins now live at the

philadelphia international airport with more on the impact being felt here in our area. >> reporter: hi sharrie, well i'll tell you the last national figures, 3,000 flights canceled into florida and from philadelphia no flights today to or from miami normally there are five. orlando still some service both going in and the last flight out of here to orlando expected to left two or three minutes ago. >> we booked wednesday. tuesday actually we saw it was coming. >> cathy and jerry from wilmington due to come home tomorrow got a direct flight out of orlando today and none too soon. >> when we left the hotel they were putting the patio and chairs in the swimming pool to keep them from blowing around. so we are glad to be home. >> others left scrambling.

andrew han was scheduled to leave ft. lauderdale next week but tried to get out this morning. but didn't look good initially. >> i looked at the board and more than half of the flights were red. canceled. >> as they moved to shut down operations, andrew found a flight home. >> ft. lauderdale to tampa and tampa to philadelphia. >> and amtrak ken canceled their service to miami. and can't say when they can resume service. after the storm hits they'll inspect the tracks for damage. >> once that is done and given the all clear we'll look to restart those services. >> reporter: well back to aviation right now. orlando is still operating there are flights. one left a few minutes ago and one is due it in here in an hour

turnpike where the west lanes we main closed following an accident involving two cars and one motorcycle. you see all of them right there, the motorcycle collided with an unoccupied police state cruiser, this happened before 1:00 this afternoon and we know that at least two people were seriously hurt in all of this. the westbound lanes are shut down. lets bring in matt pellman now. you are keeping tabs on this. >> reporter: sure have. over three hours we are without the westbound lanes of the pennsylvania turnpike in the king of prussia area and they are out here investigating and they have not moved the vehicles involved yet and the pickup truck is facing the wrong way. two lanes eastern way on the pennsylvania turnpike, i-76 and you can see that the two westbound lanes are blocked address you enter the afternoon rush hour. the next camera shot was next at valley forge, where people are

being forced off the pennsylvania turnpike. the westbound turnpike is jammed solid from fort washington, out to the blockage point at valley forge, just 8 miles per hour as you get ready to exit at valley forge and on to the schuylkill expressway. it too, the 76 schuylkill is jammed westbound to the conshohocken curve on out to the pennsylvania turnpike. a gaper delay on the turnpike as the lanes are blocked. go east on the schuylkill to 202 south to 30 west to 100 northbound, that is how you get back to the westbound side of the pennsylvania turnpike. but if you have easy pass you can use route 29 and get on at malvern. doylestown, this is the 202 parkway it's all blocked off from bristol road and lower state. lets grab the ipad and do the

commuter report on this thursday. just 12 miles per hour on the approach to the closure on the westbound pennsylvania turnpike in king of prussia. we'll talk more about it again coming up in the next half hour. >> very good. thank you. other news this afternoon philadelphia police are searching for a bank robber that struck in body daylight. it was 9:00 when someone robbed the royal bank in center city. the individual demands cash and ran from the scene. the bank has up a sign that they are closed for the day. from our new jersey newsroom. officials are still investigating the house explosion in trenton that we brought to you as breaking news yesterday. nora muchanic talked to the man that was rescued just in time and joins us live from the scene with the latest and a pretty incredible story. >> reporter: it sure is. investigators began pulling these two houses apart and they brought in a heavy claw and two

minutes ago the entire facade and front of the house just collapsed. they are trying to get into the basement there, to find the reason for the blast, meantime as you say we hear from the first time today from the man that was inside of the house when it exploded. he said in a second everything just started coming down. >> was on the couch, i dozed off and it just happened. >> william lewis is the man who along with his home health aide when the home attached to it collapsed yesterday afternoon. >> it blast off and there was two of them. and my neighbors came to try to assist me. i didn't know what to do. >> lewis says his neighbors ran to the house and were there within seconds. >> they were telling me to go out the back door and when i went to go out the back door it blew out again. and i had enough time and they pulled me through the window. >> lewis and his aide suffered

scrapes but were not seriously hurt. several agencies began to pull the homes apart to get inside to find the source of the blast. heavy equipment caused the front of the homes to shift even more. >> the front looks like a house of cards it just sloped down. and the other side isn't as bad. but you know it's like tilted. >> we were talking about how long one of the houses had been if the family so that is a little sad. >> miguel was staying with lewis in a home that collapsed and the other is vacant. he is desperate to get a bag inside that had all of his papers. >> i am talking to them to see if we can get anything as far as personal identification and social security birth certificates and things of that nature that we can really use. >> as far as we know that has

showers wrapping in from the ocean but overall a nice picture mid-atlantic to the northeast. a mixture tonight of clouds and stars, and areas of fog developing and 40s in the suburbs and 55 in dover and upper 50s for cape may to long beach island. day planner as we get foo the ends of the week here on your friday. 56 at 8:00 in the morning and quickly jumping into the 60s late morning and mid-70s in the afternoon, once again a lot of sun and a few cumulous clouds developing on friday afternoon. >> hurricane matthew, they just updated at 4:00, winds sustained at 140 miles per hour, but the pressure has dropped one millibar, if the pressure keeps dropping that means the storm is strengthening, there you see the eye getting some banded of strong winds and rain already affecting the east and west coast of florida as we look at the sustained winds and what we can expect here as we go into the evening hours, by 9:00 some sustained winds over 58 miles

per hour starting to hit west palm beach and the red area is winds over hurricane force and that gets worse as we get into the latter part of tonight and early tomorrow morning, 8:30 a.m. through cape canaveral and daytona beach and that is where there could be lan fall. between daytona beach and jacksonville. this storm does not weaken all that much into friday night at 10:00 p.m. where southeastern georgia takes the hit there with the strong winds and then the hurricane force winds start to shrink here and still a powerful storm in south carolina and north carolina. and this is saturday 4:00 p.m. it's a fairly slow moving storm as it wrap withes up the southeast coast of the united states. your four day at 4:00 forecast. nice and sunny and 75 and the cold front comes in the trough we were talking about at the beginning of the week.

it will still bring us clouds and afternoon rain here saturday of 72. nothing too heavy and then breezy and cooler and sunny on sunday and 68 and a fall chill but wall-to-wall sunshine on columbus day at 66 degrees. we'll have the rest of that local seven-day forecast, we should have an updated track hopefully by the end of the this next half hour from the national hurricane center. >> thank you. hoboken last week was going 22 miles per hour more than twice the posted speed limit which is 10 miles per hour. and investigators say the throttle was increased and decreased again before the crash. and the complete investigation could take a year or longer. and today nj transit says from now on a conductor has to join the engineer in the train whenever that pulls into that station. that same rule is implements at the atlantic city station. two delaware high school students are under arrest and accused of making threats against their school. smyrna police say that the 15-year-old boy and 14-year-old girl posted to instagram posted about a clown committing violence at smyrna high school and then emailed a bomb threat to a teacher. the school was immediately evacuated and police say the threats were made up and no students were ever in danger. much more ahead on "action

heavy winds and rains are falling on the sunshine state and it's still hours to go before the eye of the storm actually hits the shore there. residents in florida were told to get ready for what could be widespread and massive damage. in orlando major attractions like walt disney world and universal studios and sea world have all shut down. and in haiti the death toll from matthew has risen to 100 people. so far no reports from casualties from better equipped cuba or the bahamas. and we have team coverage on matthew this afternoon and sara bloomquist talked to the first red cross volunteers from our area that will head to the south. but first adam joseph at the big board with the latest. >> it's bearing down on florida now passing by the bahamas as a category 4 hurricane and winds sustained at 140 miles per hour. and the satellite imagery you

see here is visible. what you see here is kind of playing off the sunlight and where you have the deeper reds those are the taller thunderstorms and colder cloud tops the most intense part of the storm. there you can see eye wall that is starting to come together and develop here over the last few showers, that means the storm is deepening and strengthening as it heads towards florida. there you can see some of the islands of the bahamas here. the eye wall continues to lift to the north and west. west palm beach just to the east of thereof shore closing in close to the eye wall, winds gusting near 55 miles per hour that is the area of green, but an intense band about to hit over that, an area that is recording some data, that continues to record data, and that will push winds around and to the coast. we have extensive hurricane

warnings from savannah, georgia, jacksonville and daytona beach and down to miami. including the bahamas and also a hurricane watch from charleston, south carolina to the border of georgia and to the west coast we are dealing with tropical storm warning and watches, not as bad there they won't get a storm surge but pretty strong winds and heavy rainfall. in fact, if you look at how much rain could fall between now and sun with matthew's path, again hugging that coastline anywhere from a half a foot and foot of rain is likely, that is just fresh water not a storm surge. we'll chat about the track and the local seven-day forecast. hopefully that track will be updated in my full accuweather forecast. >> thank you. lets switch live to "action news" reporter sara bloomquist in center city philadelphia. sara you talked to local members of the red cross heading down south to respond to the damage that matthew could leave behind.

>> the southeastern chapter of the american red cross is answering the call today. the first of their volunteers heading south to get in position where they will be ready to help the victims of hurricane matthew. the red cross is mobilizing to respond to the hurricane. denise and john rode to the poconos to pick up this emergency response vehicle, they are heading to north carolina to a safe place waiting for the hurricane to come through. the monster storm has done considerable damage in haiti and cuba, and then it goes to florida. they will go to distribute food to those in need. >> we'll run food back and forth to the shelters and not out in the field as much yet. it depends on how badly the

storm hits and how many people go back home. >> they are likely just the first volunteers to leave from our area with more to follow. >> our mission is to be prepared to help, when people sign up to be a red cross volunteer and i hope people will sign up, it enables us to go help people in need. >> denise responds after hurricane katrina and they returned from helping the people of the san bernardino wild fires, this time around they expect to be gone for two to three weeks. i'm sara bloomquist, channel 6 "action news." >> thank you. we want to take you live to miami, florida. matthew's fiercest winds are unlikely to strike here, or neighboring ft. lauderdale but the area will get tropical storm force winds of more than 70 miles per hour. and you can follow the path of hurricane matthew any time at 6abc.com.

there you could find our interactive hurricane tracker showing you where the storm is expected to head next. a man wooz burned on his head and chest when his home caught fire in delaware. the blaze is ruled an accident. chopper 6 hd was over the scene as firefighters battled this blaze from the roof of the home. this is on the unit block of barnard street in newark. the victim is in his 30s and was treated at christiana care hospital before being taken to the burn center. officials determined that the fire started in a second floor bedroom by smoking materials. philadelphia police say that this man robbed a bar at gun point in the city's fairmount section, he allegedly pointed his weapon at a 33-year-old bar employee and got away with cash. the suspect was last seen heading west on olive street. clydesdales are known to be

work horses but it took an army of humans to save one stuck in the mud in chester county. you saw that rescue on "action news." we went back to see how cyrus is fairing. gray hall is live. how is that 1700 pound patient? >> reporter: well, we are trying to get cyrus the horse to talk to us but no luck with that. on a serious note cyrus is doing great. you can see the horse here in the pasture in all of its glory, the doctor says that cyrus is alert and eating, all good signs that means that cyrus will be back home in no time. >> if horses could talk cyrus the clydesdale would probably write a book about his resenrescue. >> he would say thank you, thank you to everyone that helped me get out of the mud. thank you for finding me. >> thanks to a bath and pampering, he looks like a

million bucks, but it was a difference picture. this is the scene when they rescued the 1700 pound horse. >> is this horse going to make it how weak did he make himself being in the mud all day. >> despite the horrifying and stressful ordeal cyrus is recovering nicely. doctors keep a close eye on him but doctors say no broken bones or major injuries. he got spooked by a big horse and ran away. >> our concern was that he inhaled muddy waters into his lungs. we were worried about his lungs and developing pneumonia. >> veterinarians gave him medication to keep him comfortable and calm. for the next few days there will be pampering and medication and then cyrus will go back home and

separated from the bully horse that chased him in the mud. a happy ending to the horse tale. >> the horrible thing is they can't tell that say muddy pit. >> we are hoping to get him home to be with his family. it's stressful being in the hospital itself. >> reporter: and so again back out live good news for cyrus, he will be here if this pasture throughout the night and then taken inside to get more medication and doctors will monitor his situation through the night. all signs are good for cyrus and he should return home for the weekend. gray hall, channel 6 "action news." >> all right a horse tale we all love thank you. many people were able to erase their past mistakes today. like misdemeanors or summary offenses removed from their criminal history. the staff from legal aid helped

westbound at valley form because up ahead just before 1:00 this afternoon there was an awful accident involving a police cruiser and motorcycle and pickup truck towing a classic car. all westbound lanes are blocked as the investigation continues up ahead and all of this traffic is forced on to the schuylkill expressway and as you can imagine the westbound turnpike is parked from past fort washington to the blockage point at valley forge where everyone is forced on to the eastbound schuylkill and westbound schuylkill is also stop and go from the roosevelt boulevard to the term pike where people can't get on the westbound turnpike. the detour is eastbound schuylkill to 02 south to the 30 bypass westbound to northbound. it's busy but not jammed. you may want to take 30 to 202 and 100, that could be a little bit better and save you a little bit of time. now problems on the eastbound side of the turnpike between norristown and fort washington a
