news at a chaotic scene unfolding. a crash involving a metro bus. good evening. i'm wendy rooeger. we'll have a live report on that in a moment. it's been another long and painful day in much of the midwest. the death toll from the violent string of storms on friday has climbed to 37. there's now concern that that number may continue to grow. nbc's jay grey reports from one of the hardest hit communities,

henriville, indiana. >> reporter: the echo of chain saws cuts through henriville, a community all sered to its core. mother nature may have delivered the first violent shock, but the fight here is far from over. an army of volunteers pulling out and piling up what they can. the weapons in this war to survive include front loaders, backhoes, and at times along the front lines of this disaster, the battle is hand to hand combat. >> people from everywhere are coming to help. just the fact that in a time like this that people can really just come, people that don't know each other can come and help and bring what resources they have. >> reporter: many are drawn here because they understand the possibility that they could be next. >> it's incredible. by the grace of god, ten miles south and it would have been me.

i couldn't imagine all my things laying all over the ground. i couldn't. >> reporter: looking for anything that might seem normal in this mess, a handful of survivors gathered for sunday service. their sanction ware is battered and torn, but their spirits are not. as they search for help from a higher power and some kind of perspective. >> we can choose to begin anew, to see this experience as the end or as a new beginning. >> reporter: the start of a very long and difficult struggle to survive. a struggle that stretches across at least a dozen states right now. in henriville, indiana, jay grey, news 4. >> back in prince george's county. back to the breaking news this afternoon. it happened near pennsylvania avenue and southern avenues. it left some people injured, including a police officer. darcy spencer is live at the scene with the latest. darcy? >> reporter: we're still trying

to piece together what happened here, but multiple agencies are indicating there was some sort of pursuit involving prince george's county police at 4:15 this afternoon. you can see the intersection is southern and pennsylvania avenue. they are getting ready to haul away one of the vehicles. i personally counted three vehicles seriously damaged here in this intersection this afternoon and there was involvement by a metro bus. i counted one person being transported off the bus being treated as a mass casualty incident here. we're told by d.c. fire and ems that six people were transported in total, inclupd colluding a few children who were injured. one of their police cruisers was struck while responding to the scene by someone who was not involved in this incident. that police officer also was transported to the hospital apparently nonlife threatening injuries. i was able to talk to people who were on the bus when this

happened. the vehicle that was in pursuit struck the metro bus. the car that was being pursued apparently hit this metro bus and people inside were wondering what had happened. they said there was flying glass inside. let's hear first from a man who was on the bus and then from the head of the bus driver's union. they are all saying this bus driver did a great job in avoiding a very serious accident. >> you see this crash. i heard a lot of boom boom. i look up, and it was a disaster. the bus driver did a good job so we were pretty safe. >> reporter: you saw glass coming from where? >> the windows broke and glass flew in the bus. >> it's a good day. it really is a good day. it could have been a lot worse than it is. it seems like it's a very bad accident, but it could have been a lot worse. >> reporter: so this incident is still evolving. we're trying to get information and piece it together. a lot of agencies are involved.

d.c. police as well as prince george's county police. we're talking about metro, but we could see at least three vehicles that were seriously damaged. there was a metro bus that was damaged. we saw a prince george's county police cruiser with at least two flat tires. a police officer was injured. a lot of things are here on the scene. a lot of developments. a very serious crash here. we also have not been told what the severity of the injuries was in this crash. we'll get more information and have the latest tonight at 11:00. reporting live from southeast washington, darcy spencer, news 4. >> all right. thank you, darcy. in prince george's county, police looking for the killer who took the life of a teen. 18-year-old mccray was found shot and wounded in the 2600 block of keating street. he was pronounced dead at the hospital. detectives are working to find a motive and suspects in this case. if it feels like your forking over more cash every time you fill up your car, you are. gas prices are up 14% since just

presidential candidate. mitt romney picked up on endorsement from eric cantor. the congressman from virginia says romney has the best plan to make america financially strong. >> mitt romney is the only candidate in the race who put forward a bold pro-growth, pro-jobs plan for the future. you know, a lot of the things he's talking about in his plan, we're working on in the house of representatives. >> cantor says he has no plans to run as romney's vice presidential candidate if romney does get the nomination. the latest nbc poll shows romney and rick santorum neck and neck as they head into super tuesday. in ohio rick santorum is ahead of mitt romney. in virginia, romney leads ron paul by a huge margin. romney and paul are the only two republican candidates that virginia voters will be able to pick from. the others didn't get enough signatures to make it on to the

a man held up a rite aid yesterday. police are asking people to look at the man in this surveillance video. he walked into the pharmacy at cedar lake plaza in sterling. he demanded prescription medication. he told workers he had a weapon, and he did leave after he got some kind of medication. a bethesda woman is looking for the owner of a dog running around in traffic on the beltway. sheryl says her electrician picked up this fox terrier in the rain on friday. he told her the dog had been running around near the old georgetown road exit on the beltway. he asked if she could take him to the pound. she feared he might be put to death if taken to the pound so her family is taking care of the

into the 20s and 30s. here are your air temperatures. 38 in martinsburg. factor in the wind though, and check out your chills. in the upper 20s for northern montgomery county. even hovering above the freezing mark in downtown washington. your sunday evening, breezy and chilly. have had some reports of the occasional snow flake drifting by. air temperatures dropping into the low to mid-30s by 11:00. that means area wide windchills staying in the 20s all evening. a couple rain drops in southern maryland. you can see the sense of the evaporating snow flakes drifting west to east in a cold flow. the clipper we have been talking about for seven days in a row is still in missouri. we have had just a little bit of sunshine today. the cold air is settling in for sure. here's the way it's going to break down over the next couple days. a noticeable chill in the air for tonight and tomorrow.

then the monday clipper stays just a little bit too far down to the south. i think there's about a 60% chance the one-inch line gets north of richmond. here are your snow flake chances as we go through tomorrow. not snow forecasting amounts because i don't think we're going to get much. but you have a moderate chance of seeing snow flakes to the west and south of town. a high chance of snow flakes in the southern end of the valley. partly to mostly cloudy. chills in the 20s. wakeup temperatures tomorrow, 20s and 30s. the best chances of seeing snow flakes are between 8:00 in the morning and 1:00 in the afternoon tomorrow. and again, not looking for anything in the way of accumulations, but if you want to talk about snow flakes, we can talk about it. near 70 for thursday and friday. so brief conversation. >> we have an 80% chance of seeing daffodils this week. coming up in sports, could
