and now, from washington's leading news station, this is "news4 midday." good morning, everyone and welcome to "news4 midday," i'm barbara harrison, it's thursday, may 10th, 2012. and we have breaking news -- the man who killed an off-duty maryland state trooper outside an appleby's in prince george's county in 2010 is going to spend the rest of his life behind bars. news4's tracee wilkins is live outside the courthouse with more on the sentence just handed down. tracee, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, barb raxt the u.s. state's attorney says this sman who is lawless, who has never demonstrated any respect for the law. and should not be shown any more

leniency underneath the law. so after this trial, this morning, they did decide to go ahead and give serial williams the life without the possibility of parole. he will be going to prison for the rest of his life. for the murder of trooper brown, who was killed in june of 2010. now there are a couple of other details that came out here as they were doing the sentencing. first of all, it came out that the reason that this man was thrown out of an appleby's in june of 2010 was because he had apparently urinated on another one of the customer there is and was being disruptive. well he was thrown out. today, we heard from trooper brown's -- partner, who said that when he came out of the bar, trooper brown decided that this man did not need to be arrested, but should be let go and given a second chance. and this is something that the prosecutor spoke about. that even after given a second chance, that the man came back and then shot and killed the trooper. and yes, now he will be sentenced to life without the

possibility of parole. prince george's state's attorney angela brooks spoke about the sentencing today and we also heard from his partner, carl peoples. this is the trooper who held trooper brown as he died. >> the trooper brown lost his life, but mr. williams lost his life as well. and we intend to be very harsh with individuals who harm law enforcement officials, who give their lives every day to protect ours. >> well that evening was the worst and the most hurtful evening i've ever had in my life. to have someone, anyone die around you, but then have a partner of yours, who you cared for, that cared for everyone else, take his last breath in your arms, is something you can't, you can't tell anybody how you feel about that. something you carry with you all the time. something i carry with me every day. >> now the judge, said that cyril williams, the judge told cyril williams that his vengeful

act deprived the community of a young public servant and crusader. now it's important to say that the reason that trooper brown was working that night was because he was trying to raise money by working off-duty and doing security for places like appby's, so he could take kids who he monitored on a trip. so this was the kind of man that he was at age 24. a man who was a mentor, he was a mason. he was a young trooper, who troopers looked up to. and barbara, i have to tell you that the courtroom was absolutely packed this morning with folks who worked with this man. and everyone from the prince george's county sheriffs office, the folks who take care of security within the courtroom as well as the troopers were completely silent and paying absolute attention to everything that was said today in that courtroom. cyril williams once again, demonstrated little to no emotion as the verdict came down. he also had no reaction as he heard the folks who had been impacted by the loss of trooper brown speak about how his death has devastated their lives. and this is something the prosecution said, that they have been looking at throughout the
