august 5, 2012. i'm eric rosales. >> we'll get started with the olympics as we head into the final week of the olympics. can't believe it's almost over. the united states is proving to be the most dominant country in competition. the u.s. has the lead with the medal count with 54. team usa has the most golds with 26. china is second with 53. great britain is a third with 29 and russia is fourth with 28 medals. it might have been a great day for americans but it's a jamaican who can call herself the fastest woman. >> there's the gun. here's fraser price as they come down through the lane. it is carmelita jenner and fraser price. they're aligned together with campbell brown there as well. >> shelly an fraser price of jamaica won the gold in the

100-meter finals. the sprinter became the first woman to defend her gold in the 100-meter race since gayle defers. >> brown of jamaica the bronze. >> impressive. to the pool. missy franklin will have quite the story to tell about her summer vacation when she goes back to high school in a few weeks. the 17-year-old won her fourth gold medal of the london games when she and three teammates won the 4x100 medley relay. the americans set a world record in that race. franklin's fourth gold medal ties her with amy van dyken for the most golds in a single olympiad by an american woman. >> perhaps the biggest story of the day, though, was the final race of michael phelps' historic olympic career. it was his fourth gold medal,

the west the thunderstorms develop. they will be here late in the day towards the evening hours. i do think there's a risk of heavy rainfall with these storms. don't cancel your outdoor plans this afternoon. i'll explain the rest of the weather details when i see you in just a few minutes. >> all right. see you soon, kimmie, thanks. >> you're welcome. governor bob mcdonnell says the republican presidential ticket is nearly complete. the potential vp running mate says mitt romney will pick a running mate in a couple of days. as one of the most anticipated announcements of the 2012 presidential race. mcdonnell is on the short list with tim pawlenty, marco rubio and bobby jindal. mcdonnell didn't say whether he would accept the honor if offered. he said he's keeping busy helping his party gain ground in virginia and across the country. >> as i told the governor, my biggest job is helping elect more republican governors around the country. if i win virginia, i'll be the

next president he said. that's how important they think virginia is. >> romney's campaign will make a vp pick before the republican convention, which by the way, is august 27th. president obama goes back into campaign mode next week with fundraisers in connecticut and rallies in colorado. but this weekend he took some time off to celebrate his 51st birthday. the president started out playing golf, then off to camp david on marine 1. he plans to spend the rest of the weekend with family and friends. loudon county police will look at an unsolved murder. the cold case initiative is taking over the search for erica smith's killer. the 14-year-old's body was tound in ash burn in 2002. the police believe she knew her killer. police will count on new forensic pathology to help solve this case. fire investigators say a fire caused nearly a million

dollars in damage to a house in ash burn this weekend. the fire ripped through a town house on mossy brook square. a family of three has to find another place to stay, as well as their neighbor next door. fire investigators ruled the cause accidental. we've got a traffic alert this morning. your commute may be tricky tomorrow if you take the wilson bridge. heads up on this one. the new permanent lanes on the virginia side of the bridge will open tomorrow. that means there's going to be five lanes in each direction between the wilson bridge and springfield. and that means the entire virginia portion of the beltway will have at least five lanes each way when the express lanes between springfield and the american legion bridge open later this year. >> and for the start of the workweek, watch out for new construction cones along south capital street in southeast d.c. water crews are starting work on the sewer system in that area. it will be down to one lane in

the man accused of shooting representative gabrielle giffords wants to plead guilty to the crime. that according to nbc sources familiar with this case. on tuesday, psychiatrists are

scheduled to testify that jarod lee loughner is competent to understand the charges against him. he's accused of opening fire in january 2011 at a meet and greet in tucson. six people people and giffords critically injured. a judge will decide whether to accept the guilty plea or not. details have not been released. the wife of illinois congressman jesse jackson jr. is revealing new information about her husband's hospitalization for depression. jackson's wife told the chicago sun-times that her husband collapsed at his d.c. home two months ago. she says doctors are considering the possibility that jackson's depression is linked to his weight loss procedure in 2004. the congressman is currently being treated at the mayo clinic in minnesota. former u.s. senator larry craig is trying to fend off a lawsuit. he's arguing that an infamous bathroom trip happened on government time. he's accused of soliciting sex

from an undercover police officer at the minneapolis airport back in 2007. the federal election commission sued craig in june. they say he used $217,000 of campaign money for his personal legal defense. craig argues that the bathroom trip was covered because he was traveling from idaho to washington, d.c. for work. he pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct for that bathroom encounter. a wedding cake of all things is causing a stir in colorado this weekend. the owner of a small bakery said he couldn't make a couple's cake because of their same-sex marriage. here's matt fleener with the reaction that that got in that community. >> i opened masterpiece cake shop in september 1993. >> you get it, okay sm. >> it's a small shop. like the size of a three-car garage. we make all the icing and everything from scratch. >> jack phillips is not quite your mix from the box kind of guy. >> give me 15 minute and you too can be making your own. >> custom creations are his

than 350 million miles at speeds of more than 13,000 miles per hour. in less than 24 hours, the mars rover will finally reach its destination. scientists expect the mars rover's curiosity to arrive on

the red planet around 1:30 a.m. tomorrow. nasa says the landing is one of the riskiest ever. if all goes well, curiosity will spend two years gathering data. it will help scientists figure out once and for all if there was life on mars. the project comes with a $2.5 billion price tag. >> chump change. >> nasa is getting closer to figuring out how it will get astronauts back into orbit. the space agency picked three companies to help develop a system to bring humans to the space station. space x is one of the companies that sent an unmanned cargo capsule to the space station. nasa also had agreements with boeing and the sierra nevada corporation. it eventually wants to outsource the launching to the private sector. a lot going on in space. but back here on earth? >> steamy, steamy today. >> what do you think, are we going to get rain chances? got some rain yesterday. what about today? >> we will. probably late in the day and a lot of people are wondering about the nats game, the marlins

are in town. thunderstorms to the west, i think the game will get off without a hitch. still steamy, in the 90s again. it's great to see this really early sunday morning. normally, you're like wait, don't you guys go on at 6:00. we went on at 5:00 today because of extended olympic programming. let's get started with the weather. partly cloudy out there. it is a nice start. just a little muggy. 80 degrees is where we're at. winds are out of the south at 10 miles an hour. the humidity is 76%. the dew point registering 72. more numbers show lots of middle and upper 70s west and north. it is south and east down across southern maryland where we're waking up with 80 towards lexington park and the river. good morning to you. let's get started and talk about your weather forecast today. i'm calling for temperatures around 94 by 1:00. that's when the storms will be firing off to the west. think along i-81 and east of

there. then later this evening, around the dinner hour, that's a risk of maybe severe storms marching our way. another chance for some heavy rainfall, too, embedded within these storms. so your yard could pick up april decent soaking if they happen to develop over your house. that would be later this evening. here's a look at the radar now. the closest storms to us are way up in pennsylvania and these will continue moving to the north and west. if you're watching us from frostburg and a lot of people to deep creek lake to the west in garrett county, you'll have storms earlier in the day today. this is the batch that i'm concerned about that will be moving here later, late in the afternoon and really this evening and overnight tonight. that's when the atmosphere is probably going to unwind and it's going to be really wet, i think, for your monday morning commute. let's motivate the maps here and i'll show you what i'm talking about. again, it's the west focused earlier in the day and monday morning soaker possibly as this front comes through. then the front is going to stall just towards south monday.

so southern suburbs will be in the target most of the time. up to the north, hagers town frederick, an early shower tomorrow and sunshine in the afternoon. in writing, here's the forecast. partly sunny, hot and humid, storms likely with heavy rain possible. highs 94 inside the beltway. overnight, mostly cloudy with showers and storms around. 68 to 76 for your low. and tomorrow again, the storms sliding south but not a rain-free day for d.c. how do i see the next several days? i'm liking tuesday's forecast for staying dry. that is the day to wash your car. then we're going to ramp the temperatures back up as we think about the end of the week, back into the middle 90s again. the coolest day is monday. the hottest day is looking to be friday when we still have storms around. >> tuesday is the day. then we'll get soaked again on friday. >> we need the rain. let's hope for it. >> that's true. >> thanks, kimmie. redskins training camp this

weekend is all about the fans. thousands braved the heat and humidity for a chance to get up close and personal with the players at fan appreciation day, of course. some fans came from as far away as texas, believe it or not. as news 4 reporter reports, not everyone follows the team. that's when they go to a new training camp facility. garrett? >> alex maldonado is close to the front of the line. not bad, considering where he came from? >> came from connecticut. armando came from texas where that other team is. he wants to meet rg3. >> 30-hour drive. that's worth it. if i get to meet him or a signature, that's definitely worth it. >> one fan only had to come from richmond to meet the new qb at training camp and soon he won't have to go that far. by training in richmond, home base is ash burn gets state money to refurbish. >> it's going to expand the fan base and making job creation the number one priority of our

i'm still pretty numb from it. this is the house i grew up in. it's pretty hard to see everything gone. >> darcy fencer, news 4 today. more record setting temperatures and drought conditions across much of the nation. we all felt the impact of this summer's devastating drought at the supermarket. now we'll see if prices will head even higher when the usda issues the august crop report updating its outlook for the fall's harvest of corn, soybeans and everything else. >> if it seems like you're paying more to fill up at the pump, it isn't your imagination. gas prices are up 11 cents a gallon from a week ago. that's according to aaa. the national average for a regular gallon of gas is $3.60. locally, gas in the district will cost you $3.84 a gallon. in merchandise md, gas is at $3.54. in virginia, it's $3.42. another effect from the drought. hay used to feed farm animals is in short supply. the supply is so low, many

but i think it's going to come later in the day. especially towards the evening. don't cancel your outdoor plans. this morning, the sun is coming up and we have just partly cloudy skies. it is a nice start. temperatures, well, they're warming up fast. 80 degrees now on the way up to the middle 90s. a southerly wind pushing you along at 10 miles an hour means that humidity is 76% this early sunday morning. here are more numbers coming in. 79 in manassas. up to the north an west, we have 73 for the good folks up there from martinsburg, west virginia. the high today in the low to middle 90s in d.c. a steamy day. it will feel closer to 100 or so. these showers will be firing off to the west first. so martinsburg, hagers town, maybe frederick. later today, tonight, that's when heavier rain will be here and possibly some severe thunderstorms. meteorologist chuck bell will be guiding you through that should we get any severe weather. as of this early hour, the
