pure panic after a fire breaks out at a local apartment building and not everyone escapes unscathed. a late-night shooting has a close knit community shaken as two teenagers recover from gunshot wounds. i'll have a live report coming up in just a few. the sports world remembers one of the faces of espn after stuart scott dies of cancer. a special honor he received right here in d.c. we begin tonight with a developing story. fire ripped through an apartment complex in alexandria and witnesses say they heard smoke detectors going off and screams. the people inside frantically tried to escape the two-alarm

fire and news4's derrick ward is live at the scene. what about the families who were inside? >> reporter: you know fortunately those people are being looked after at this point. we understand there were some injuries but not serious injuries. some injuries from burns and from smoke inhalation. but take a look behind me now. you can see this is the apartment where they believe this fire might have started and the investigative part of this started to find out what started this fire that displaced several families. it was about 3:00 without warning residents at this apartment building were faced with the unmistakable signs of a fire first the smell of smoke. >> i thought someone was cooking at first. >> reporter: it was clear his neighbors were in trouble. >> i heard people crying and yelling. >> the fire originated at the ground level and was extending up the side of the building. >> reporter: that meant people on the upper floors were in the path of the rising smoke and

flames. >> our firefighters immediately effected extinguishment and stretched a hose line and started getting up to the balconies on ladders to rescue occupants. >> reporter: three women were taken to the hospital with burns and smoke injuries. others were also treated for smoke inhalation. it's likely an early warning kept this from being much worse. did you hear smoke detectors going off? >> i heard a lot of them going off. >> reporter: the cause of this fire is just starting to be investigated and all six apartments were heavily damaged and 15 people displaced. again, we're at the morningside apartments off 390. the red cross is on scene to help those displaced families. we're told they will first get them dinner and go about business of finding a place for these people to stay for the next few days because taking a look at this apartment, all of the utilities are off and they are uninhabitable and will be for some time.

>> thank you. two teenagers walking to a synagogue last night when they got shot. both had to be rushed to the hospital. investigators say there's no connection between the shooting and the synagogue but neighbors in green belt are rightfully worried. >> i have never experienced anything like this before. i'm kind of in shock a little bit. >> reporter: gunfire so close to sarah's home in this close knit co-op community on ridge road is not the norm. >> i was inside last night. i heard some yelling and some shots. >> my husband heard three shots, pause, a gap and then five more additional gunshots. >> reporter: this woman who did not want us to show her face on camera say gunshots came out of nowhere and she did hear noise from a fight that broke out near her house and this synagogue before the shots were fired. >> extremely quiet. we hadn't heard any noise prior

to that. >> reporter: a party at the synagogue. one describes it as a hip-hop party. the two teens who were shot ages 16 and 19 are expected to survive their injuries but this shooting has shaken this community and it will change the way the synagogue does business with outside groups. the synagogue released a statement expressing regret over the incident saying it had no knowledge of or involvement in the event except that it had rented its facilities to an outside community group. it is now changing its policy of renting to outside groups. >> it's a nice neighborhood. nice synagogue. i know a lot of the people there. i just was real surprised. >> reporter: police say the shooting victims who were headed to the party at the synagogue could not tell them anything about the suspects. some scary moments today for a woman driving through rock creek park. she lost control of her car and

plunged into shallow water near georgetown. she was able to get out on her own and climb on the roof of her car until help arrived. all this happened just south of p street and police had to shut down part of rock creek parkway for a couple hours while crews pulled that car out. we had mild weather today but if you thought it was an anomaly, you were right. storm team 4's amelia segal joins us live in the weather center with what's coming next. >> good evening. look at the temperature right now. can you believe we are at 65 degrees at 6:00 p.m.? mostly cloudy skies. i'm tracking showers moving through the area. it's also a little bit breezy right now with winds at about 15 miles an hour. now, on storm team 4 radar i'm tracking this area of rain and then some showers back behind it. this rain pushes through the area moving toward the east and it clears the d.c. metro area by 9:00 10:00 p.m. after that our temperatures drop significantly. we're dealing with showers until about 10:00 p.m. and that's when we're at a temperature of 52.

by midnight we're at 47. 1:00 a.m. 45 degrees. no rain in the forecast for tomorrow. it is significantly cooler and blustery as well. i'll let you know how cool it will be on monday coming up in about ten minutes. >> thanks. stuart scott changed the way we talked about sports. catch phrases like cool is the other side of the pillow. i knew stu. he was a damn fine man. he would have his arm around you one minute asking how you're doing and next he would have you cracking up. he died this morning after struggling with cancer for the past seven years. he thought he had beat the disease but it came back twice. scott anchored on espn for more than 20 years and was a fixture on sports center. he accepted the perseverance award last year. >> when you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer.

[ applause ] >> so live. live. fight like hell. and when you get too tired to fight, lay down and rest and let somebody else fight for you. >> a few months ago stu was honored here in d.c. with the 2014 nfl players association georgetown lombardi award. his friend and fellow anchor accepted that award for him. stu was 49 years old. he had two teenage daughters. an emotional day in new york city as about 20,000 police officers said good-bye to an officer killed in the line of duty. wenjian liu's widow cried and clutched a picture of her late

husband. officer liu died in an ambush a couple months after they got married and his widow called him a hero at work and at home. >> his spirit will continue to look to us. he will keep an eye on us. >> some officers staged another show of disrespect to mayor bill de blasio turning his backs on him as he spokes. police union leaders accused the mayor of fostering an anti-police climate because he sympathized with demonstrators that protested deaths of unarmed men at the hands of police. today recovery teams pulled four more bodies out of the java sea and a u.s. navy helicopter brought them to shore. victims were on the airasia flight that crashed last week. search teams spotted a large object in the water and think it's part of the wreckage but bad weather prevented divers from staying in the water for long. today the indonesian government

a big dip in gas prices in maryland. drivers there are paying eight cents less than a week ago. aaa says the price for regular is now $2.41 a gallon and some people are paying less. like us on facebook and let us know where you're filling up in maryland. folks are weighing in with cheaper prices. gas was $2.37 in buoy at the exxon on route 301. another driver paid 2.11 in waldorf and that was the price at a costco. drivers have to watch out for deer in our area but in arizona, wild bobcats are a problem. a man heading for dinner friday night got quite a surprise when a bobcat somehow hitched a ride in the grill of his car. he spotted the small animal dart in front of the car and thought it scampered off. and then he noticed a crack. when he looked further, he spotted a wild bobcat nestled
