good morning, everybody. i'm aaron gilchrist. >> and i'm angie goff in for eun. that rain was relentless overnight. >> let's see if it's moving out here. >> you can exhale now. our flood threat has ended as the flood watch is now expired and the heavy downpours we had yesterday, we get one last batch of rain coming through a couple hours ago. now it's on the eastern shore. luckily, a few showers out to the west of us throughout most of the region just some low clouds are lingering. have the umbrella handy for later today. you won't need a jackie but you will need long sleeves. the umbrella may be needed by late afternoon and especially into this evening as we have another possibility of showers coming through. long sleeves. it's rather cool this morning.

50s in the mountains. closer to washington around the metro area being we're in the mid to upper 60s, near 70 in washington and right by the chesapeake bay. your bus stop forecast for this tuesday, next weather and traffic on the 1s. new crash. we're talking about route 7 right there at ashburn village boulevard. a crash in the roadway, they are not saying whether or not it's inbound or outbound. third street tunnel, southbound, that off rank to -- ramp to d. street. wide look at things beltway looking quite good. no major problems there. 95 just disappeared on me. i promise it looks good there. prince george's county indian head avenue pennsylvania avenue looks good. 95 there in virginia everything rolling just fine. back with a live look at 270 in

ten minutes. imagine being on your way home and a tree does that. it hits your bus while you are riding in it. that's exactly what happened to this 16 y metrobus during the evening rush. it happened just as the rain started to come down west of mcpherson qar -- square. the rain and wind came out of nowhere and then they heard the crash. >> we were across the street and it was a lot of wind and we just had this big bad, strong loud noise. we ran to the windows and we saw things flying around. then we realized that the tree had come down. >> passengers were actually on the bus when that tree came down but no one was hurt. all of the passengers were able to get out of the bus through the back door and get on to another bus. we dart into silver spring right now and you take a look at this just an amazing sight to see a tree split literally in half by a lightning strike.

nobody hurt here. montgomery county 911 dispatchers said between 4:00 and 5:00 yesterday even they got an emergency call every two minutes because of lightning strikes. many of you may have seen the giant puddle. that's in the potomac yard area. a few cars decided to drive through that area. most drivers did the right thing. as you often hear turn around don't drown. during the storm, a damascus maryland woman, had to be rescued from her car because she didn't turn around and she got stuck in high water. we got some new video just into the newsroom. take a look at that dashcam video. it is a deadly confrontation

between two men in tulsa, oklahoma. check it out right there. those troopers are yelling for the two men to move away from the standing water. you see one of men push the trooper. that man was shot and killed. you saw the officer there draw his gun. the other man was arrested for assault and public intoxication. now the troopers are on leave while the investigation continues to play out. four minutes after the hour right now and we're working to learn the name of a woman who died in germantown. montgomery county police say they are boyfriend killed her. officers arrested a man last night on darnstown road that's miles from the target store where the shooting happened. you can see police put up tape all over the parking lot there. police caught the boyfriend after a car crash when he crashed. that man in the hospital. in clinton, maryland police reopened a road after a deadly crash there. a man in a motorcycle drove off

the road near adam lane last night. it's not clear why that happened. the man died. a man threatening the metro system may face 20 years in prison. he's responsible for threats dating back to last december. he's charge with alleged attempts to make terrorist attacks against the metro and bus systems. he appeared on a reality tv show called "catfish" last year. he pretended to be a well-known rapper to allegedly gain money from a fan on line. the acting head of the tsa is no longer in charge. that decision coming in late last night. this after a report found that the tsa screeners were not able to stop all concealed explosives and weapons from getting through checkpoints. the screeners failed miserably in tests at dozens of airports.

obama by getting more followers on twitter yesterday. this morning, more than 200 students are breathing a big sigh of relief after his sat tests are found in northern virginia. leaders found a sealed box containing the answer sheets in the shipping area. school leaders are looking at how the tests got there. they are on their way to new jersey where they will be graded and the college board anticipates this has to be validated and says students won't have to take them again. can you imagine? i'm breathing a sigh of relief for them. that is so nerve-wracking thinking that you have to go through all that again. >> now you can worry your score. >> that's protocol for them to validate it. 11 minutes after 5:00. time for check of weather and

hope is fading. the ship sank into the yangtze river during bad weather. the captain thinks it was a cyclone. 458 people were on the ship. only 18 have been rescued or swam to shore there. one of rescuers listening for signs of life. five confirmed deaths at this point. and including the captain has survived we're hearing. reports coming out of china say most of the passengers on board were older retirees on vacation aaron. kristen wright at the live desk. thank you. taking a live capitol this morning. we expect plenty of answers today about two big transportation problems. amtrak and takata will face lawmakers today. amtrak will face questions about the deadly train derailment last

month. eight people died. and takata's vice president will answer questions about the company's defective airbags this afternoon. they caused the biggest recall in u.s. history last month. those airbags can burst instead of inflate, triggering an explosion in your car. they recalled 34 million airbags. we learned they plan to replace a chemical propellant that could be the problem. scientists believe that it becomes unstable over time. the company says it's examining everything that could have gone wrong. the agency responsible for making sure your flight is safe to board is under fire this morning. a new report says tsa screeners are not keeping dangerous weapons from getting through airport checkpoints and now the acting head of the agency is no longer in charge. news 4 megan mcgrath is live at

reagan national airport. this is down right scary. >> reporter: it's very alarming these statistics. tsa airport screeners failed to detect fake bombs and weapons 95% of the time during under cover spot-checks made by teams from only land security and now the tsa's acting administrator has been reassigned in light of these findings. homeland security teams smuggled a variety of contraband including fake explosives and weapons. nbc news reporting in one case an alarm sounded and a screener did a patdown of one of the agents and still did not find a fake plastic explosive taped to that person's back. these under cover teams have been spot-checking the security checkpoints at the busiest airports around the country for the last 13 years, but of course these results 67 out of 70

tests, the tsasm has been ordered to revamp procedures and training. thank you. today, we could get a better sense about whether a drug rehabilitation center the center would be built at a former presidential fishing spot near camp david. they have been followed and monitored on facebook. the center is nonreligious and won't be used to recruit new members. the sheriff's office until maryland is receiving thousands of dollars in brand-new riot gear. washington county's sheriffs office bought $68,000 worth of riot shields, gas masks, tear

gas launchers. the unrest in baltimore prompted them to buy the gear. entire schools in maryland can apply for free meals for all students. the new law allows all schools to participate in the program. schools who have at least 40% of their students have low income will qualify for those meals. schools get free breakfast and lumpling. 20 minutes after the hour news for your health this morning, you can get a free skin cancer screening on capitol hill. melanoma is one of the deadliest forms of skin cancer. screenings will be offered from 11:00 to 1:00. experts say one in five americans will develop skin cancer in your lifetime. imagine being able to monitor your unborn baby's health with your smart phone.

charges of child pornography in north carolina. the man was arrested over the weekend. patrons -- he was a santa and children's entertainer in the raleigh area. in the day ahead a friend of the convicted boston bomber will be sentenced. he faces up to seven years in prison. last year, he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and conspiracy charges. prosecutors say that he removed things from dzhokhar tsarnaev's dorm room when he realized that his -- when he recognized his friend during the man hundred. three people were killed. 260 were hurt during that bombing. police are scouring social media about a murder case. officers charged this man with killing a washington university student grace mann.

all of this tracking up to the north, and northeast, passing well west of the metro area. a few more of these as we look through the rain timing through the shenandoah valley, hagsers town through noontime. metro area should stay dry through the afternoon. evening hours, we'll likely get some of these showers coming from the south from 6:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., we'll have those showers moving up from the south and coming right into the metro area by late tonight and this time tomorrow morning could be pretty wet as well. we've been dealing with some residual problems with a little bit of high waters this morning. you've got a problem on metro. >> now we have a new problem on metro. red line single tracking between grosvnor and medical center. we're trying to get some new information for us. montgomery village avenue at mid county highway, new crash there. third street tunnel the off

ramp to d street at the tunnel is blocked. 95 getting slow just because of the time of day. 2770 a little sheen on the roadway. travel times coming up in ten minutes. it's 5:33 now and a moving good-bye to a family found murdered inside their d.c. home. hundreds attended yesterday's funeral for savopoulos family. some students where phillip went to school carried his casket. savopoulos's leave behind two teenage daughters. they were away at boarding school at the time of the murders. friends say they will remember how they lived. not how they died. >> it was a beautiful family. they wanted to help people and make a difference in people's lives.

police arrested darryn wint for those murders. investigators believe he had help. the man charged with murdering his neighbors in rockville talked about their deaths on facebook apparently. scott tomaszewski posted that dick and jodi vilardo were nice people and it was shocking that they were killed in their neighborhood. the suspect spent time in their house after their murders to look for things to steal. it looks like the nsa will ultimately stop collecting and storing your data as early as this afternoon, the senate could vote on a bill to phase out nsa data collection over time. phone companies would hold the data instead. however, the nsa would still have access and be able to search your data. senator rand paul blocked an earlier version of that law on sunday. paul says the reforms in this new bill still don't go far enough. >> i'm for searching the records of terrorists i'm not just

having a generalized search of everybody in the american public. >> this time it looks like he can not block a vote on the bill. president obama does back this new bill. former house speaker dennis hastert will face a judge on thursday on a multimillion dollar hush money scandal. he was indicted last week for lying to the fbi and breaking banking laws. he had to keep an unknown person about a relationship he had with a young man. authorities say that relationship was one of his former students. there are new questions about the judge in this case. he made political donations to hastert more than a decade ago. secretary of state john kerry back on u.s. soil this morning, and he says his broken leg will not hinder luke -- nuclear negotiations with iran. i believe this is his motorcade after he arrived back in boston.

he's going to be treated for a broken leg in that bike accident he had in europe. the clock is sticking for kerry and his iranian counterpart. another world cup soccer executive is out anti-inflammatory job at least, the general secretary of the division has been suspended. he's not allowed anywhere near soccer-related events. two officials from the congo have also been suspended. police are trying to figure out what caused an assault on a maryland middle school student. four students were involved in the incident that went beyond a minor altercation. one student was taken to the hospital. you might be wondering, we're done right? she is getting ready for the today show in new york city she will take part in today's parenting segment in the 8:30

memorial bridge all this while crews do emergency repairs there. the national park service and federal highway leaders closed two curbside lanes. they also banned tour buses. we took a look inside the bridge. the steel beams are supposed to be 3/4 of an inch thick, now because of cross-examination, those -- corrosion, those beams are paper thin and riddled with holes. >> for 80 years, that steal infrastructure has been sitting there and moisturized by the rain and salt. >> the bridge is safe to drive on during repairs. eventually the entire middle section will need to be replaced. you'll have a chance to weigh in on vdot plans to widen

lawyer after the school board there decided to ban a transgender school from using the bathroom of the gender the student identifies with. virginia is not one of the more dozen states with laws that explicitly prohibit discrimination in schools based on gender identity. last month, a fairfax county school board added gender identity to its nondescrims policy. the fredericksburg school board approved a $41.1 million budget. teachers get 2.5% pay raise, administrators between 2.5 and 5.5%. on multiple occasions, city council members expressed opposition to administrators getting a larger raise than teachers. a look at the washington monument this morning, the

outside is all you can see today as the monument is closed. news 4 is at the monument this morning and what's the reason this time derek? >> well, it is those pesky elevators. this is one of those iconic symbols of washington, d.c. one of the things that identify with when they think about this city. you won't be able to get inside until later this week. you remember it was back in august in 2011 when the earthquake hit, that shut the monument down about 13 months. shortly after the monument reopened they started having issues with the elevator. things went kind of smoothly up last week. we had a couple of shutdowns, thursday and friday and now some reopenings. it is closed again until thursday. we have been told there have been intermittent electrical

outages that have caused issues with the elevators. they have technicians there and they are going to be working on that and they do hope to reopen it on thursday. all of these problems are caused some of these people to call for maybe replacing that elevator system altogether. park service officials have resisted that up to this point. they say there is no one issue causing the problem. they hope this causes things to run smoothly at the end of the week. tom kiereinen driving us here in the studio. we dealt with all the heavy downpours last night and thunder and lightning and hail. >> puddles and high water. >> it was incredible. i was looking at my storm team 4 radar yesterday afternoon. it was it was a pepperoni pizza. now it looks like a quinoa salad
