vote gets counted? >> people are expecting probably certain people to be on the ballot. they will see a number of names particularly on the republican ballot. quite a few more than you might think are actually-of should be on the ballot. in reality, only one person has withdrawn from the campaign. but the other candidates who have suspended their campaigns, you can still vote for them. so you will see their names on the ballot. if you do vote for them, your vote will count for that candidate. >> and you want to fill in your own candidate? >> if you want to write in, that will not count. the ballot will be rejected preliminarily. you'll be asked if you want to redo your ballot, that

the house went up in flames around 8:00 last night on massachusetts avenue near southern avenue in southeast. police are not releasing the victim's name or any other information about how the person died. breaking news in urbana this morning. a crash that melissa has been following. we've learned that karl neal, the driver of the tractor trailer, died. you can see it flipped over on fingerboard road. the road is shut down. maryland state police tell us that neal lost control of the truck, he hit a guardrail and the truck caught fire. it's not clear how he lost control. chopper 4 headed to that crash right now. should be there in just a couple minutes. keeping an eye on that for you. we'll talk about alternates, how to get around it coming up. also ahead, we're digging deeper into d.c.'s plan to use a fleet of private ambulances. mark segraves shows us who will staff them. and plus wrapping up a

the virginia polls are open in decision 2016. you have until 7:00 tonight to get to polling places like the one you see right here in fa fairfax county. already pretty busy this morning. make sure you bring a photo i.d. with you. a new poll out, angie goff breaking down the numbers from the live desk. >> yeah, just got this this new survey monkey poll just in and it shows a big

trump. people were asked which republican presidential candidate would you support right now. trump we're looking at 40%, that is a four point jump from last week. rubio is the second choice at 21%. cruz trailing in third with 18%. now, of the people surveyed, they said they were pretty much -- 47% said this is who they would vote for. on the democratic side, clinton 51%, sanders 41%. we saw a one point increase for sanders. the margin of error just under 2% for republicans and democrats. we'll continue to go over the numbers and bring you anything else of significance. and going into today's voting, here is a look at the delegate count. donald trump is leading republicans with 82. candidates need more than

nomination. there are nearly 600 delegates available to republicans today. now to the democrats, hillary clinton leads the delegate count with 546. candidates need nearly 2400 to qualify. there are more than 1,000 available to democrats today. and look up for a second at this video from a trump rally in virginia where it appears a secret service agent choked a photographer and threw him to the ground. you can watch the bottom right hand corner of your screen. we've highlighted the confrontation where it looks like one man chokes another man and then throws him town. the secret service says it's aware of the incident and is working with law endorsement in radfo radford, virginia for figure out what happened. the photographer says the incident began when he stepped out side of the media area. and make sure you have our nbc washington app, it is where we will send you any breaking news alerts when a winner is declared in both

coming up on 6:18. a task force set up to make sure students are not abused starts work today it in prince george's county. you'll remember deonte carraway has been charged with sexually abusing as many as 17 children. a task force will review the district's safety and security policies and decide what needs to be changed. the group sxegtss to have results by may. carraway now facing new charges respecten indictment claims he engaged in graphic sex acts with at least 11 victims. he faces 1 13 counts of sexuall exploiting children. and all the victims are between 9 and 12. carraway also faces a class action lawsuit. your safety is the number one reason d.c. is about to start using a fleet of private ambulances. mark segraves has details on how they will be used, something you will see only on news 4.

>> reporter: within matter of weeks, fire stations will get a new private ambulance service. news 4 got an exclusive look inside this new private company amr. and learned that they will be using data from past 191 calls to predict where the highest need will be and then they will know where to position those ambulances, 24 of them throughout the city, 18 hours a day. they are also hiring almost 200 emts. and d.c. residents will get priority for those jobs. we'll start seeing those ambulances on the streets by the end of the month. an ohio school district is closed today as police investigate a shooting. >> four students were hurt after

fire inside a high school cafeteria yesterday. two students were shot, two others were hurt as they tried to get away from the shoot thor. >> be hard for everybody to get over this. >> the young shooter was arrested at the school. police say they know the motive for the sooting but they're not releasing it. starting today, you can text 911 if you have an emergency in loudoun county. emergency responders there say the text should be short and it should have specific location and type of emergency info. loudoun county officials suggest first calling 911 if you can. they asked for your feedback and today fairfax county will address your concerns about the cleanup after the blizzard of 2016. some big issues that keep coming up with unshoveled school sidewalks, inefficient police patrol and inconsistent plowing patterns. board of supervisors will review those concerns at 2:30 during their snowzilla snow summit. breaking news right now on the roads. ch

clear skies out there have allowed temperatures to drop back into the 20s and 30s for most. but on the whole, another nice one coming our way for today. 65 degrees yesterday, and we'll be just about that mild again later on this afternoon. for now, though, a seasonably cold morning outside. 28 in bristow, 32 chantilly. 35 in charles town, west virginia. 40 now in falls church. storm team 4 radar, nothing to worry about now. nothing to worry about for all the daylight hours today. our next chance for rain still back way out here across parts of illinois, northwest indiana. the rate it's going, still with 17 hours away. take puts it in here after 10:00. so most of the rain between about 10:00 or 11:00 and end hopefully before the sun is up tomorrow morning. there is a live picture of the u.s. capitol. sun up in a couple minutes at 6:40. current temperatures in the low to mid-30s. we'll be in the mid-40s by 9:00.

starting as snow and mixing as snow and rain friday afternoon. the weekend looks pretty good. on the chilly side, but mostly dry. temperatures in the 40s to near 50. 6:24 right now. some pretty incredible video. this is out of texas. that car slammed right into the gas pump here. this happened at a shell station in arlington, texas. the fire broke out, other drivers started running. no word on whether anyone was hurt. google has been the only company testing self driving cars not to get into a big crash. that is until now. "usa today" reporting the self driving lexus suv crashed in to a bus last month. it was going about 2 miles per hour in california. the bus was going 15 miles per hour. nobody was hurt and google says that its computer tricdriven su made the wrong division when it was training lanes. >> only going 2 miles per hour. can you imagin

news 4 at 11:00 will have live coverage from northern virginia immediately afterwards. we're also in prince william county where people will be gathering in the coming hours for honor the life of officer ashley guindon. first, though, breaking news on the roads. melissa mollett here with your first 4 traffic. so again take a look, chopper 4 over this big cleanup. a fatal crash overnight in frederick county in urbana this morning. so 80 right now is shut down there near park mills road. big accident there. and this will be shut down until about 7:30 this morning. you can see the front of the cab just completely twisted. went down an embankment there and lost part of its load. alternate, 85 or 109. those are your best bets here this morning. a lot of your 80 to get to 270, so i understand you'll have to take the alternate this morning. 66 t

she died during her first shift as a police officer. it will be an emotional day for the police department. derrick ward is in woodbridge with more on how the public can pay it respects. >> reporter: that is something that has been going on in this area since this tragedy happened on saturday afternoon. and now there will be an o outpouring of grief at the hylton memorial chapel. the 28-year-old will be memor l memorialized starting at 10:00 with a viewing and then the funeral at noon. it is open to the public. 28-year-old ashley guindon was just resworn as a proip police officer on friday. on saturday, she responded to a domestic violence call at a home in woodbridge. she was among three officers who showed up at the home on lashmere drive when a gunman inside the home opened fire killing guindon. now, police say that that gunman rodney hamilton h

killed his wife, crystal, who had placed the 911 call. he's facing capital murder and first-degree murder charges. the two other officers who were shot are recovering from their wounds. but this community is still reeling from these two deaths. and today we will indeed see this funeral here. guindon is expected to be buried in new england where her family resides. we're live in woodbridge, da derrick ward, news 4. ahead of today's funeral, law enforcement officers lined a processional route for officer guindon last night. it was an impressive show of support. her body passed the garfield police station where she was assigned and it ended with her flag draped casket arriving at the chapel. the community also lined the route to pay respects. the other victim in this series of events is crystal hamilton, police say her husband killed her before police arrived.

according to her sister on saturday the couple's son returned from a sleepover and his parents were arguing. the situation quickly escalated and hamilton called the police. she told her son to run and as he ran, he says he saw his father pick up his mother and throw her down. the 11-year-old told his aunt that he heard gunshots as he rushed down the stairs and out of the house. >> i everyon said to her, this your protector. and to say that to her and this is the same person who turned around and took her life, that -- it's a hard pill to swallow. >> news 4 has learned the suspect ronald hamilton was charged with assault back in 2007 in another state. he was allowed to enter a diversion program to avoid jail time. search is on for a patient who ran away from the northern virginia mental health

michael marshall went missing about 6:00 last night. you can see his picture here. if you see him, contact police but do not approach him. he's known to exhibit violent behavior. he's believed to have ties to the centreville and sterling areas. district leaders are voting on a new plan today that includes paying at risk youth to steer them away from crime. the program calls for a stipend for those at high risk of crime who take part in the counseling. it would pair mental health professionals with police to work with individual communities. d.c. police would also be required to collect more data on crime and situations where force is used. jesse matthew jr. is expected to enter a guilty plea tomorrow that could help him avoid the death penalty. he is the map wn who faces murd charges in the death of morgan harrington and hannah graham. matthew is already serving a life sentence for a sex assault in fairfax. download our app to get any breaking news

apple's fight over security with the fbi heads to capitol hill today. james comey and an apple senior vice president will test tie before the house jew addition and i committee. the fbi wants apple to create software that would allow the government to access an encrypted iphone from a san bernardino shooter. apple argues that would set a dangerous precedent. and the fbi plans to appeal another case. a federal judge in blook lynn blocked a justice department request to open a locked iphone used by a suspected drug dealer. that ruling is a boost for apple over security and gives the company an advantage in the san bernardino case. breaking news right now, chopper 4 over this

it is 6:46 and right now our community is having its first chance to weigh in on the presidential election. it is super tuesday. if you're registered to vote in virginia, you have until 7:00 tonight to be at a polling place like this one in fairfax county. we're already seeing lines, so plan a little extra time for your vote. virginia has a diverse collection of voters. political experts say it's america in miniature. meaning a win in virginia could suggest a win later on. now the latest polls have hillary clinton in the lead right now in the democratic race in virginia. she could win up to 95 delegates. and 14 superdelegates today. now, democratic candidates need nearly 2400 delegates to qualify for a nomination. and now to the gop where trump needs -- trump holds on to the lead and he needs 49 delegates available to

we know that karl neal was the driver of that truck and he did die on the scene. maryland state police say the driver lost control for some reason. they're still not clear why. use 85 to get around it. follow first 4 traffic for updates. 6:50 thousannow. we're working to find out more about a person found dead in a fire in a house on massachusetts avenue. police are not releasing the victim's name or any details about how the person died. as we get more tore, we'll have it here and on the nbc washington app. another ban on smoking. as of this morning, smokers cannot light up outside at any city owned property in rockville. that includes all out door parks and facilities. rockville says it's following montgomery county's lead on the ban. it does not apply to privately owned businesses like restaurants. also today, the rules for tanning could be change to go keep your children safe.
