>> jackie, what is going on in southeast d.c. where you are? >> reporter: chris, an alarming sight here at united medical center on southern avenue. behind us you can see d.c. police down there investigating what was an alarming development about 3:00 this afternoon. we are told a man and a woman drove up to the emergency entrance and requested medical assistance. they had both been shot. we are told that the man is in very, very serious condition, described as grave condition from his injuries, and that the woman's injuries are less serious. now, what we're told is that the shooting did not take place here at the hospital. it took place some distance away from here on 23rd street in southeast d.c. so there are detectives at that location also, but investigators here at great united medical center and they have an entire section of the emergency room entrance cordoned off.

4:31 pm
back to that slow-motion chase that captivated the nation back in 1994, and it continued on through the trial. this is just one more twist, perhaps this will be of interest to the conspiracy theorists out there, the people who are obsessed with this case, but the timing is awfully curious coming right as a tv series drama at thisization of the trial is airing on another network and the meaning of this is really unclear. the police today were very parsimonious in details about what actually happened here. we don't know when this knife was found. we don't know where it's actually been through all these years, and we certainly don't know what it may prove even if it does prove something about o.j. simpson's involvement, it has no legal bearing because he cannot be tried again for a crime he's been acquitted of. >> mark, speaking of that knife, it's been described as a buck knife. so police are examining it and testing it, but from your rec
4:32 pm
which is a small knife, bear any resemblance to what police couldn't find back in 1994? >> well, it's possible. it depends entirely on exactly what it is involved here. there was a knife that was found and brought forward by the defense during the trial, and it turned out to have really no bearing on the meaningful evidence in the case. it is one of the continuing mysteries of the o.j. srcimpson case, that the murder weapon was never found, but it's kind of a bit far-fetched to think that this is suddenly it and that it will have material on it that will be -- that will prove anything after this length of time and without any secure chain of custody involving where this knife has been for all these years. >> so, mark, one last question. i mean, i know simpson is already serving time in prison for a completely unrelated case, so what happens next in terms of the lapd and investigators and maybe the prosecutors out in california?
4:33 pm
>> well, simpson is eligible for parole as soon as next year on that nevada case, but most lawyers we've been talking to say that he cannot be held accountable for the nicole brown simpson murder even if there were to be, say, his dna on this knife because he's already been tried and acquitted, but the police and the prosecutors do consider this case still open because there was never a conviction of anyone. >> all right. mark fisher, thank you so much for being with us this afternoon. >> thanks so much for your insight, mark. the simpson murder trial is the focus of sunday's dateline nbc. josh mankiewicz will sit down with prosecutor marcia clark as she describes how she felt when the jury delivered the verdict. >> i thought of ron and nicole and i thought this is wrong, it's so wrong. >> do you blame yourself for this? >> you know, i always do. i do. i mean, i was the one trying the case, but at the end of the day we really -- there was no way to reach that jury. there was no way to make them believe. >> this
