and when maurice bellamy was brought in, davonte's mother cried out -- "that's the man! that's the man who shot my baby". >> i couldn't believe that the kid, that it was a kid. just looking, the same around the same age as my grandson. i just couldn't believe it. >> 15-year-old davonte washington, shot and killed last saturday afternoon at the deanwood metro station. he was with his mother and two younger sisters. he was on his way to get an easter haircut. according to court documents. bellamy approached him on the platform and said -- what do you keep looking at me for? you know me from somewhere? davonte said -- what? and then bellamy pulled out a gun and shot davonte washington twice in the chest. the murder captured on tape by metro security cameras. police compared t

assaulting a police officer and assault with a deadly weapon. he remains in the hospital being treated for a gunshot wound. once he's released from the hospital that's when he'll have his first court appearance. doreen, back to you. >> dorothy spencer, thank you. it turns out u.s. capitol police ask congress for more money just days before yesterday's shooting. >> they say they wanted the money to fay for more officers and more security posts. scott mcfarlane in the news4 i-team have been investigating security. and threats on the capitol grounds. there's part of our report tonight. scott? >> it was earlier this month that the capitol police filed this report with the u.s. senate asking for $additional $35 million. to hire another 72 sworn officers to bolster the force and help add and man more security checkpoints on the grounds, inside capitol complex buildings and outside. what they call prescreeners to screen people before they enter. in fact one agency official told

items in the baggage claim area. that item was found by police dogs that hit on it. bureau chief julie carey is out there with the latest. julie? >> yeah, you can see behind me, just a quick glance, nothing looks out of the ordinary all the activity on the far east end of the airport, that is where several parts of the airport have been evacuated both in the baggage claim area and up in the departure area, now we're told this is all being done out of an abundance of caution. the investigation started when a canine alerted on an unattended item so they have cleared out that area in the baggage, in the baggage terminal area with that item was found. we're told that passengers were cleared from carousel areas 3 through 8. also some areas around the ticket counters have been evacuated as this investigation proceeds.

the elevator in the washington monument broke down again today. it is the ninth time it's done that in less than a year. it got stuck about 280 feet up this afternoon. 19 people were on board. they were able to get off. another 23 people on the observation deck, this h to walk down. nearly 900 steps. engineers are now at the monument. trying to fix the problem. but until that elevator can be repaired, the monument will remain closed. the medstar health system is slowly bringing its

after a malware attack yesterday. the attack forced workers to use paper record-keeping and even canceled some medical procedures. news4's chris gordon is at washington hospital center with more on what happened. and also, how you can protect your own computers, chris? >> doreen, imagine a family member needs radiation treatment for cancer, monday through friday for eight weeks. then there's a computer attack and all radiation treatment comes to a stop. that's the situation one local family faces tonight. medstar says it is making significant progress restoring its clinical i.t. system. but the computer malware attack has caused some confusion. this woman, who doesn't want to be identified. says her husband's daily cancer radiation treatments were suspended on monday. >> he needs a treatment as do many, many others that i've met there. so we're worried.

has been charged in connection with a stabbing on easter sunday could also potentially face charges for another crime. police arrested john mercado today for that stabbing in springfield. but relatives of a murder victim from last friday say the police told them that mercado was also the prime suspect in that case. william martin palma died after somebody stabbed him in the leg. mercado has not been charged in that case. it's been a week since the terror attacks in brussels. tonight an impromptu memorial in a city square continues to grow and visitors are leaving mementos to pay tribute to the 32 people killed in those attacks. police are still searching for a chief suspect in the attacks. he's become known as the man in white. his image was captured on airport surveillance cameras, walking with the two suicide bombers just

passengers on an egypt air flight that was hijacked are safe now, but there's still trying to make their way back to egypt tonight. earlier today their flight was hijacked and diverted to cyprus, television cameras were rolling when the hostages got out of the plane any way they could. one guy climbed out the cockpit window. tonight, the hijacker is in custody. claudio lavanya has more. >> the hijacking of the flight from alexandria to cairo ended with all passengers, including eight americans, walking free. ane

being closed for many hours following the landing of that plane. due to the demands by 51-year-old egyptian man who claimed soon after takeoff that he was wearing a suicide vest that turned out in the end to be fake. but of course the pilot didn't take any chances and he landed the plane here. soon after landing, the hijacker freed all the women and children and then for the first three hours demanded to speak to his estranged ex-wife, who is a cypriot living in cyprus. after the man started making demands, he wanted political eye sil up and to speak to members of the european union. that was enough for the spokesperson for the government to call it a mentally unstable man. the real motive for the hijacker is still unclear. >> in any case, it's not something which has to be do with terrorism. >> in the meantime all passengers that got stranded here, some of them will fly back to cairo on

the unintended baggage item has been checked out and cleared and pose those danger. here's what it looks like inside the terminal a few minutes ago. the baggage carousels from 3 to 8, that area all cleared out. that's where this unattended item was alerted on by a canine earlier this afternoon. airport officials also cleared out an area in the departure, the united counter. the jetblue counter and about five other counters, off-limits for about 90 minutes this afternoon. that unattended item does not pose any danger. the employees are not going to be returning to those evacuated areas and soon travelers will be able to get back inside the airport. too. new details tonight about how the fbi broke into a mass shooter's iphone without apple's help and it's raising questions about just how secure your data is on your phone. nbc's jay gray has more on the
