the elevator in the washington monument broke down again today. it is the ninth time it's done that in less than a year. it got stuck about 280 feet up this afternoon. 19 people were on board. they were able to get off. another 23 people on the observation deck, this h to walk down. nearly 900 steps. engineers are now at the monument. trying to fix the problem. but until that elevator can be repaired, the monument will remain closed. the medstar health system is slowly bringing its

passengers on an egypt air flight that was hijacked are safe now, but there's still trying to make their way back to egypt tonight. earlier today their flight was hijacked and diverted to cyprus, television cameras were rolling when the hostages got out of the plane any way they could. one guy climbed out the cockpit window. tonight, the hijacker is in custody. claudio lavanya has more. >> the hijacking of the flight from alexandria to cairo ended with all passengers, including eight americans, walking free. ane

the unintended baggage item has been checked out and cleared and pose those danger. here's what it looks like inside the terminal a few minutes ago. the baggage carousels from 3 to 8, that area all cleared out. that's where this unattended item was alerted on by a canine earlier this afternoon. airport officials also cleared out an area in the departure, the united counter. the jetblue counter and about five other counters, off-limits for about 90 minutes this afternoon. that unattended item does not pose any danger. the employees are not going to be returning to those evacuated areas and soon travelers will be able to get back inside the airport. too. new details tonight about how the fbi broke into a mass shooter's iphone without apple's help and it's raising questions about just how secure your data is on your phone. nbc's jay gray has more on the
