one was found in a basement of a townhouse that burned in gate osburg, the other died in a fire in d.c. we're learning more about the fires. kristin is in gaithersburg on windjammer way. good morning, kristin. >> reporter: as you mentioned, fire investigators are here now trying to figure out exactly what started this fire that apparently has killed one man. just a few minutes ago, we had the chance to speak to a friend of the victim. >> i'm just devastated. >> reporter: lynn coren has lost a friend. firefighters found his body in the townhouse apartment he rented on windjammer way in gaithersburg. he was in the basement in the debris. lynn spoke to him just two days ago. >> he cleaned up his life. i told him i missed seeing him, that i would like to come over

>> reporter: the fire was so intense and wouldn't go out. firefighters initially thought gas was fueling the flames. >> it's just like having a candle continuously burning that you can't put out. >> reporter: the people living upstairs got out. firefighters thought everyone was accounted for until they found the body after midnight. this morning engineers gave firefighters the okay to go back in, and now investigators are trying to figure out how the fire started. >> he's in my prayers. >> reporter: at this point, officials have not identified the man who died. back to you. >> thank you, kristin. in the other fire, one person died in this one this morning in the 3800 block of 45th avenue in northwest washington. fire officials told us only that the person who died was male. in the video you can see the fire extended onto the second floor and onto the roof as well. we're working to find out how the fire actually started.

desk. right now merrick garland is working with senators on capitol hill. take a live look at the senate office building. garland is expected to appear at a photo op there in just a little while. garland met with minnesota senator al franken. these meetings with democrats come just one day after the first gop senator met with garland. the congress says they will not meet for a replacement yet. the workers were planning to strike last week but decided to wait until after the terror attacks in brussels. security officers, cleaners and baggage handlers, including workers at reagan national, will walk off the job for 24 hours. they're demanding a higher minimum wage and

it affected records at georgetown and washington hospital center. they said it does not appear any personal information was stolen. a warning to parents to take the keys and the kids out of the car when you get out. this after someone steals a car from a daycare with an eight-year-old girl inside. the suspect is still on the run in dallas, texas. police there say the mom was dropping off a child but left her car on with her daughter inside. the girl was able to escape with only minor injuries. police did finally track down the car. it's one of our busiest tourist spots and it's been shut down nine times in the last year. in 60 seconds, what we're finding out about new

just into the newsroom, governor terry mcauliffe has vetoed some legislation that he calls nothing more than to stigmatize. he said the bill would protect people who actively discriminate against same-sex couples. he fears businesses wouldn't want to come to the states and create a strong business climate. a similar controversial bill in georgia was just vetoed by the governor there and the law being criticized as anti-lgbt in north carolina has come under fire from the state's own attorney general. we're learning this morning

virginia man whose murder conviction was overturned now says he did it. justin wolf admits he helped plan the 2001 murder of fellow drug dealer daniel patroli. prosecutors withheld evidence in the case and overturned the original conviction. wolf remains in prison awaiting a new trial until this guilty plea. a confidential settlement has been reached in a hazing lawsuit at the university of virginia. a former swim team member accused five upperclassmen of embarrassing hazing rituals in 2015. he said he was os tra sized by his team when he told the coach and administrators. terms have not been released, but they did issue an apology. today you can check out the design concepts for an amazing modernization and design concept set for union station. the project will include realigning tracks, realigning the concourse and preserving the

she sued cosby in 2014 claiming the abuse happened in a bedroom of the playboy mansion in 1974. cosby's attorneys want the case put on hold until a sexual assault criminal case filed in pennsylvania is resolved. three fourth graders in alaska have been suspended for allegedly plotting to kill a fellow student. the three female students had planned to poison a fourth person with silica gel packets found inside their lunch boxes. the plot was uncovered by another student who overheard the girls talking and told a school facility member. they said no charges will be filed and it's up to the school and school district to set the punishment. medstar is working to get back to complete service with a com

fire that firefighters had trouble putting out. take a live look at the scene right now in gaithersburg. hours before, a townhouse was up in flames and a man died. news4's kristin wright talked to a woman who says she knew the victim and was a close friend. >> firefighter investigators, as yo mentioned, they're trying to figure out exactly what started this fire. at the same time people who knew this man who died are just now finding out what happened. this morning engineers came out to make sure the townhouse was safe for firefighters and investigators to re-enter. a floor collapsed in the fire so they thought they might have to shore up the structure in order toç go back in. this was a pretty big one. the fire chief told me today that despite efforts by firefighters, it wouldn't go out so easily last night. they initially thought gas had to be fueling the flames. when firefighters did get the fire under control, that is when they found the man in the basement. we talked to a frien

mid-50s. low 60s by 3:00. unlike yesterday, we won't have to battle the wind. lighter wind toward the end of the day as well by 6:00 p.m., back into the upper 50s. today there will be a vigil for a 15-year-old boy killed at the deanwood metro station. the vigil for devon washington will begin at 6:00 at that station. the shooting happened while his mother and two sisters were waiting for a train. they ask the shooter asked why washington was looking at him. washington said, what? and he shot him in the chest. investigators are looking into the shooting. police are looking into a man's death at a warehouse. the man was killed when a huge storage area collapsed inside a giant refrigerator at the food warehouses yesterday.

critically. police have not released any of their names. we're also working on the name of a person who died in a pond yesterday. police say the body was found in the water off williamson boulevard in manassas last night. they're not sure why it was there. a d.c. fire captain is off the job this morning after being charged with second-degree theft. the alleged theft happened while alan noskeski was at a house fire wednesday night. he took an expensive book from the home. the book was worth a few thousand dollars. noskeski is now on leave after being arrested. people are relieved after the city council voted down a redistricting plan. formally known as plan 12, testimony came for two hours
