tulsa area. >> telephone poles can fall. let's stay out of the way. >> reporter: a heavy hailstorm reeking havoc in arkansas. toys were tossed in this mobile home park in kentucky. the roof torn off in this gymnasium while students and staff were huddled inside. >> we decided not to load busses. everything happened very, very quickly. >> reporter: back in mississippi, first responders worked overnight to clear debris-scattered roads of trees and power lines. >> despite all the damage, no major injuries reported. here in columbus, little in the way of damage even to homes. people here waking up pretty thankful this morning. >> steve patterson, thank you. >> that storm threat stretches all the way up to the northeast today. dylan is in for al. what are we looking at? >> we'll see more storms in the southeast. each day gets a little

today. more flooding rain will be an issue today. we have flooding warnings south of atlanta. the storms will weaken as they move eastward. we are still looking at the damage from yesterday. a lot of wind damage reports and four reported tornadoes. nothing causing too much damage on thursday. today, our threat stretches from virginia all the way back to new orleans. again, large hail, damaging wind gusts and isolated tornado is possible. it's really the risk of flooding rains. this cold front is going to sag to the southeast and not move eastward all that quickly. as the lines of showers and storms develop, we will see the potential of possibly flash flooding through southern georgia and northern florida. we could see as much as a widespread 3 inches of rain. some areas could end up with 6 to 8 inches of rain. that could lead to flooding. >> dylan, keep us posted on that. we move now to the presidential race and the battle for wisconsin. new polls have the front runners trailing. nbc national correspondent peter

trailing badly, double digits. is this potentially a sign of trump coming back to earth, or is that establishment fantasy? >> we'll see. i hesitate to say this might be the week that you finally see the establishment striking back. there's a couple things different about wisconsin that make you think, these polls are real and trump is in trouble. number one, it's a conservative movement that's successful in wisconsin. they're not as divided, not as unhappy. scott walker has been a two-term governor. they have the speaker of the house in paul ryan. chairman of the rnc is a wisconsin guy. they're not fans of trump. the other factor, civility. wisconsin, very similar to its neighboring states of iowa and minnesota, they expect a certain decorum when you conduct yourself. trump doesn't fit it very well. guess what? he lost iowa. he lost minnesota. i wouldn't be shocked

because ofsivi civility, he los wisconsin. >> hop over to the democrats. bernie sanders within a small lead or tied with hillary clinton there. looking ahead to new york down the road. that's probably tighter than clinton would like it to be right now. what is the level of concern, despite her advantage in delega delegates, about this race? >> you can judge her concern by her schedule. three days ago, he wshe was goio spend her time in new york. she and bill clinton added events saturday in wisconsin. they're afraid of getting blown out. they know they might lose, but they want to lose like michigan. they don't want another new hampshire situation. there is an outside possibility of that. wisconsin's electorate fits bernie sanders. madison, the heart of the progressive movement in the midwest. he could do very well. a big win for him there,

i didn't think they were gunshots. then there were five or ten more after that. i could see the muzzle flash through the tinted door, so i ran out of there. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say state police were conducting a countcounter-drug training mission, including talking to people. chad dermyer, age 37, approached a man to ask routine questions. >> the subject pulled out a handgun and shot chad multiple times. the male subject continued firing his weapon, as two other state police troopers returned fire. >> reporter: the gunman ran but was shot and killed. >> the shooter is down. area is secure. >> reporter: the wounded trooper was rushed to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. two women inside the terminal were wounded by gunfire, though not seriously, and hospitalized for treatment. police are not revealing the gunman's name. they say he had a criminal record and was not from virginia. some officials say he had mental prob.

you know, kind of gangster. felt like what miles' music and the experience i have with miles is for me. >> you zeroed in on a time period. you didn't try to cover miles davis' entire journey. you said, this short period of time, with his first wife, that's important. why did you focus in on that? >> well, it's sort of framed and a bifurcated telling. there was a present time, and then there were these flashbacks that we always refer to. he is in a moment in his creativity where he's not playing. he's sort of stuck. that, for me, when you go through the research and you go, this prolific artist for all these years, so impactful, and now he goes silent for five years. what's going on there? why did that happen? how does he get out of it? does he get out of it? what does he say when he does get out of it? those were the questions that were the jumping off point for me. i thought, this is a good place to start the story. >> your d
