custody. plus a. neighbor of that homeowner describes what he saw hours before the shooting and what he heard when it all went down. off the top at 11:00, the man accused of shooting and killing a prince georges firefighter is back at the home where the deadly shots were fired. we are trying to get answers of why the police released him. and darcy spencer joins us live with what she is learning tonight. darcy? >> reporter: we are live across the street from the landover hills fire department and you can see an ambulance decorated with flowers and candles in remembrance of the fallen firefighter. the state's attorney office telling me they don't have any evidence to prosecute him, to charge him at this time.

>> it was all over in five or six seconds. it's was rapid fire. >> richard vetter was standing in his driveway when he saw firefighters forcing their way into his neighbor's home. >> that went on for a few minutes and it took them a few minutes to get into the door and almost as soon as that noise stopped, the gunshots rang out and there were six or seven gunshots. >> an hour later he says his neighbor surrendered and the police had guns trained on him as he came out. >> i saw the garage door open and the lights were on in the garage and he walked out with his hands up. >> his brother called firefighters to the house to check on him and when they got in the house he opened fire, a 13-year veteran of the department died and a volunteer fire was seriously wounded. the

shot and wounded. the man told detectives he fired in self defense. he has been released from custody, and the state's attorney says there was not enough evidence to place charges at this time. >> the citizens' brother thought he was in medical duress, and he did not realize they were there to assist him. >> the repairman showed up to fix the door that was opened and a fire department spokesman says there will be a review to see if policy needs to be changed. and the injured firefighter underwent surgery and he was shot four times and is expected to survive. you can find all the details at the nba washington app. >> you talked to a defense

attorney who is not involved in the case about the shooting. was he surprised they released the homeowner? >> he was not surprised and he thought it was a good thing they were not rushing to judgment, and they waited out the investigation, and it's continuing so it's possible charges could be filed done the road and he points out if this man truly believed people were break into his home and that's what he was saying and fired in self defense, that's a defense he could use in court and potentially have a good case. prosecutors want to make sure before they charge somebody that they have the evidence and they simply don't at this time. >> thank you so very much. and the fire department and ems department still trying to deal with the reality one of the colleagues is gone. today the ambulance used for the calls sits outside

a palm beach zoo closed this weekend after a tiger violently cleared on its zookeeper. she is being remembered for love and dedication to animals. she was doing routine tasks inside the tiger house on friday when a malaysia tiger attacked and killed her. zookeepers tranquilized the tiger and had to wait until the sedatives took affect before they could get her out. this is the first death in the zoo's 60th year history. >> we have one female tiger and three males and this involved one male tiger that has never been involved in this zoo. >> the tiger is now recovering at the zoo. west palm beach police, and florida fish and wildlife and osha all investigating.
