metro responds tonight to a scathing report about safety defects across the rail system. what metro says it's doing about it. and the investigation not over yet. who could end up deciding whether the man who shot two prince georges county firefighters will face charges? news 4 at 11:00 starts now. good evening. tomorrow will mark six days since anyone saw a 31-year-old firefighter and tri athlete from woodbridge. >> authorities found her car on saturday at shenandoah national forest. despite searching until sundown again tonight, there's still no sign of her. >> news 4 is live at the church where family and friends gathered to pray for her safe return. >> reporter: nicole has many people who care for her very much. and they can't rest until

found. ♪ 'twas grace that taught >> reporter: family and friends of firefighter nicole mittendorf gathered tonight. they lit candles and prayed for the safe return of the 31-year-old who was last heard from via text on april 13 and reported missing after she did not show up for work on april 15. >> tonight we're just coming to the to cry out for nicole's safe return and just a loving support of her family and friends. >> reporter: virginia state police released images from the search conducted today that focuses on several miles of federal parkland surrounding the white oak canyon trail in madison county, they found her mini cooper at the parking area at the trail entrance shortly before 8:00 saturday. she's described as a

athlete and runner. friends theorized she may have gone there to work out. >> the stresses of the job are really, really difficult. so sometimes she likes to get out and run and challenge herself and get away from the stress. and we're hoping that she's just there needing our help now. >> reporter: a facebook page called "find nicole now", has been created. her husband posted on facebook over the weekend, thanking everyone for their efforts. live in woodbridge, jackie benson, news 4. le here at the live desk we just got our hands on a letter that was sent to metro's gm that may worry anyone riding the rails. empty fire extinguishers have been discover and lights all over the tunnels that don't work. the shutoff switches are supposed to cut power to the third rail in an emergency, and some of them are broken. the

administration just wrapped up a so-called safety blitz in which they investigated safety concerns across the entire system. they also found filthy emergency signs and piles of debris blocking emergency exits. the letter says in combination with one another, these defects create a systemic safety condition that significantly limits metro's ability to manage a fire or a smoke emergency in the tunnel. now our transportation reporter has been tweeting a lot of this. he just alerted this to metro's response. officials are saying they're conducting employee safety briefings this week and all the critical items are receiving priority attention. jim? >> thank you. it will likely be up to a grand jury whether the man who shot and killed a prince georges county firefighter will face any charges. friday two firefighters forced their way into a home in temple hills maryland after the homeowner's brother called 9

medical emergency inside. when the firefighters got inside the house, the man opened fire, killing firefighter paramedic john you will maniy schnyder. and the man could appear before a grand jury as early as tomorrow. >> there are any number of pieces of evidence that have to be analyzed. ballistic tests, witnesses that we have not had an opportunity to interview at this point. but when are able to reach that point, we are likely to present that case to a grand jury. >> he said i thought the firefighters were intruding and feared for his safety. police are searching tonight for the person who killed a transgender woman in a hotel room in rockville. investigators say 22-year-old kiana mo

she was born in upper marlborough, lived in d.c. and worked as a makeup artist. police believe she may have been working as a prostitute. police want to know anything that may have something to do with her death. i'm standing at fourth and hamilton street. police have blocked off the intersection behind my and put up yellow crime scene tape. a man was shot in the stomach. he is conscious and breathing and was rushed to the hospital. meanwhile, police are talking to people in the area, going door to door, asking people did they hear anything, did they hear shots fired, screams, anything whatsoever. police are gathering details, and we'll bring you updates as they become available on our nbc washington app. no word on any suspects. news 4. the death toll in that

has grown to 413. we've also learned that at least one american is among the dead. the state department says u.s. officials have been in touch with the family, but they have not released the person's name. the quake's magnitude was 7.8. apartment danger isn't over yet. more than 200 aftershocks have rattled area making rescues dangerous. now to a story you saw first here on news 4. an active shooter training exercise during roll call is under investigation. a d.c. police sergeant had an officer unload his gun and pretend to be an active shooter in a room filled with 10 to 20 armed officers. that officer pointed the gun at another officer and then pulled the trigger on the unloaded gun. that's according to sources familiar with the investigation. police chief kathy lanear says it's too soon to make a conclusion.

fund-raising by bernie sanders' campaign manager. her campaign says sanders is resorting to negative campaigning because he doesn't have a clear path to the nomination. sanders spent the day campaigning on long island. he says polling has consistently underestimated his campaign, and the real poll happens tomorrow. the u.s. is sending 200 more troops to iraq to help in the fight against isis. ash carter made the announcement in baghdad today. lester holt was in iraq with carter and talked with him about the plan. >> how do you respond to those who say the incremental approach just doesn't get the job done? >> well, we going to accelerate this campaign every time we find an opportunity to do so. i'm very comfortable that our operational approach is the right one. >> the u.s. will also send more mobile rocket launchers and apache helicopters to iraq.
