touch fashion, music, and pop culture. people are remembering the man whose star burned so brightly for so long. >> we have team coverage all afternoon. >> but first, what happened to the 57-year-old. erica gonzalez starts us off at the live desk. >> we don't know exactly how prince died, but investigators are releasing a few more details this afternoon. sheriff's deputies says they were called to the star's paisley park studios just outside minneapolis just before 10:00 local time. they find prince unresponsive in an elevator in his home. they performed cpr, but was unsuccessful. just last week, the iconic singer was rushed to the hospital after his plane made an emergency landing. he was being treated for the flu. he cancelled several shows around the same time because he was not feeling well. we're going to bec

57-year-old's sudden death throughout the afternoon and at the live breaking news desk. prince is being remembered this evening for husbais commun service and spotlighting social and political issues in his songs. >> after the riots in baltimore last year, prince performed a special concert to help people heal. fans were asked to wear something in gray in tribute of freddie gray. some of the proceeds went to youth charities in baltimore city. during the concert, prince debuted a new song calling out the killings of young black men. reaction is pouring in from fans and celebrities following his death. >> justin timberlake says this can't be real. shaquille o'neal describes prince as another icon gone too soon. >> outside of prince's home, a crowd is getting

minute. >> reporter: the body of 57-year-old singer was discovered this morning at his suburban home in minneapolis. a small group of fans assembled in the rain to honor the artist's memory. as a singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist, the man was one of the most acclaimed musicians of his time. inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame in 2004. >> i'm a musician. i live for that. i live for playing and creating songs. >> reporter: the minneapolis native sold more than 100 million records worldwide. hits included "when doves cry," "little red corvette" drew on james brown and jimmy hendrix. one of his biggest hits made the

a first of all, i didn't believe it. i know you felt the same way. after that, the thought was i've got to get to donnie simpson. i was 9 years old when you played "purple rain" nonstop on the radio when it first came out. you knew him. you've been to paisley park. >> just shocked. the first notification i got was from cnn that someone had died at paisley park. i didn't think a lot of it. then two minutes later my phone just starts blowing up. my producer calls and tells me tmz is reporting that it is prince. i couldn't believe it. i went to the internet. i'm searching around. i had this conversation with terry louis who grew up with prince over the whole minneapolis sound. we had similar experiences today. i kept looking

they reported this two days ago. maybe it's not true. that's what i was looking for. i just didn't want to believe it. terry said he just shut off the internet and the tv because he felt like if he didn't face it, then it couldn't be true. then you come to the realization that it is true. >> can you begin to explain what it was it about prince's music that people latched onto it the way that they did? why was he this icon? >> it was the groove. it had cool messages. it was sexy. it was different. you look at the way he dressed sometimes. here's a dude with high heels on and clear butt panels on his pants who will take your woman. i mean, he was just one of a kind. he was just so different. >> he was able to reinvent himself like madonna. he was one of

their voices heard in decision 2016. today some of the top presidential candidates stumped for support. ted cruz held a campaign rally in frederick. cruz slammed donald trump's comment that transgender people should use the bathroom they feel is appropriate. as the father of daughter, quote, grown adult men, end quote, shouldn't be allowed in a bathroom with girls. clinton rally supporters in silver spring and beltsville today. most young people are not voting. she encouraged young people to be a part of the political process. meanwhile trump, governor john kasich, and bernie sanders were all in pennsylvania today, but first the gop frontrunner held a town hall that aired on the today show this morning. he made the comments about transgender people that cruz has criticized and he weighed in on the $20 bill. >> i think harriet tubman is fantastic.

mick jagger to oprah expressing their sorrow. first at four, it happened as people were leaving the funeral of a fallen prince george's county firefighter. a woman pulled from a vehicle moments before it burst into flames. >> reporter: pat, take a look at this. this is what the car looked like when it was all over. look inside. it's hard to believe that anyone could have survive this, but indeed a woman did with some help. this car burned so badly i had to look at the hubcap to tell it was a volkswagen. now, this is how it happened. an intense fire on route 301. the flames reaching about 20 feet up into the air. deputy fire chief darren ware

70s. winds out of the south at about 12 miles per hour. temperature wise right now 72 degrees martinsburg. 75 in warrenton. now i am tracking a few showers now. that is going to be some great news. a dry stretch for sure. since april 1st, we're down close to an inch now. about 0.9 of an inch. since march 1st, we're down three inches of rain. we do need to see some rain. this is what we're going to continue to see. not much going on right now, but a few showers back towards frederick and montgomery county. just plain rain back towards the west. this will move in towards the winchester area around frederick county, virginia, in the next few minutes. heads up if you're in close locations. we do have the cloud cover moving on in. w

going across the mid atlantic right now. the rain we're going to see tomorrow is still well back to the west. this is still a very strong storm. very rare you see a storm this compact moving our way, and there are some showers associated with the frontal boundary. that front will move in during the day tomorrow. we will see some showers and a rumble of thunder too. just some clouds. not any rain. as we move in through 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, maybe some showers. most of those look like they could be back to the west. i wouldn't be surprised to see a few around our region, but most of them stay back to the west. during the day, a couple of showers here. a couple of showers there. it is not going to be a washout. unfortunately, not everybody is going to get rain from this. but if you do, the best chance will be tomorrow evening around 5:00, 6:00, 7:00. that's when we also could see a couple of thunderstorms come in. if you're going out on friday night, you probably need to take the umbrella with you. few showers.

stevie nicks saying this is what it sounds like when doves cry. vehicles rigged to cheat on emissions tests. >> susan hogan has been following this story for you and has the latest. >> today really served as a deadline for volkswagen. the automaker and the u.s. government reached a deal. the owners will have the option to either sell back the vehicles to the company or get them repaired at volkswagen's expense. drivers who leased the vehicles would be able to give them back. the effected models are two liter four cylinder diesel engines dating bae inine ining . they will have to set aside other money to promote green technology. regardless of what

anticipating earlier as far as rain. it will be around 0.1 to a 0.25 of an inch. here's a look at this evening going into early tomorrow morning. here's 8:00 a.m. showers coming in very scattered and awfully light. first thing tomorrow morning there will be a little wet weather around. it will be overcast. temperatures in the low to mid 60s across the area. call that a little cool. you'll probably need at least a jacket for the early part of the day. by the early afternoon, you'll want to lose it because the temperatures will get into the upper 70s. better chance of rain for the drive home. roads will be wet with most of our wet weather coming in the afternoon. the umbrella, yes. a jacket early. short sleeves you'll be able to get by for tomorrow afternoon. we want things to be nice by the weekend, so let's check out the future weather.

united stadium. pretty fitting and easy to remember too. this is according to the "washington business journal" today. the stadium will seat 20,000 people and is expected to open in time for the 2018 season. developing story in delaware. a high school sophmore has died after being attacked in a high school bathroom. we're working several developing stories in the newsroom right now. many of you worry about safety when you pick something up that you bought online. the safe place in our area that could change things. the american cancer society estimates that more than 3,000 cases of bone cancer will be diagnosed this year. but even though it is a more f rare form of cancer, it can still be deadly.

fall, it can be difficult to treat. doreen is here with more. >> the type of bone cancer that dr. sheryl chun had is rare. it is resistant to chemotherapy and radiation. the only way to treat is it with surgery and that can be complicated when tumors are as large as the size of hers was, the size of a melon. saving the bone around it can be very challenging. to remove the tumor, doctors had to operate from the inside out. basically operating blind by making a 3d-model of her pelvis. a doctor was able to virtually see where he was cutting, increasing his chances of saving her hip. i'll have more on this cutting-edge surgery coming up on

a federal appeals court has thrown out a lawsuit filed by kim davis. she's the kentucky clerk that made national headlines when she refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. she sued the former governor because her name was on the license forms and that violated her religious beliefs. when the state's new governor took over, he signed an executive order removing the names of county clerks from marriage license forms. in dismissing the case, the court says davis is no longer experiencing irreparable harm. a teenage girl survived a mass shooting in which four other women died. >> she herself was shot in the head. susan sample shows us the emotional moments when abby came back home. >> reporter: last trip down a hallway that's become home, steps forward in this extraordinary journey, leaps really. after six weeks
