capital camera this morning. the newly refurbished capitol dome gleaming in the april sunshine. everything greening up beautifully. certainly looking like april. wasn't feeling like it around dawn when we were just near 40 degrees. by noontime, though, we'll be in the mid-60s. and then up near 70 degrees by about 3:00 this afternoon. lots of sunshine around. warmer weather on the way as we start off the week and some storms, too. a look at that coming up this half hour. we are following a developing story this morning, a three car crash in chevy chase sent three people to the hospital. it happened around 11:30 last night near connecticut avenue and jones bridge road. we're told at least one person has serious injuries. and a man is dead after he was stabbed in the district. that happened just before 10:30 last night on kennedy street. police do not have a suspect at this time. if you have any information that can help officials track

down, do give them a call. we're following a developing story this morning, a major house fire caused part of the roof, the floor, the walls to collapse at this silver spring home. we know one person inside that house was treated for smoke inhalation. derrick ward is live there this morning with the very latest. wow, we can see a lot of damage behind you. >> reporter: indeed there is. take a look at the damage. the roof is gone, the garage is totally exposed from the top. even the house next door, the vinyl siding buckled and began to melt. and that actually alerted the neighbors who live there. that started about 4:00 a.m. this morning and as you were saying, it was a pretty devastating fire. this house appears to be a total loss at this point. joining me now the spokesperson for the montgomery county fire department. pete, what can you tell us about what happened here? >> so we had one occupant home, apparently she for whatever ron

closed behind her and locked. so she was unable to call 911 at that point. so we believe the fire burned for an extended period of time before a neighbor next door called it in about shortly after 4:00. when we arrived on the scene, the house was fully an blblaabl. we had 75 or 85 firefighters on the scene. no injuries to the firefighters, however the occupant of the home, adult female, was transported to the hospital with smoke inhalation. the cause is still under investigation, but pretty significant damage. there was a partial roof collapse when firefighters first arrived, they did make be an interior attack but had to back out temporarily. but pretty significant loss. cause still under investigation. >> when you good no serious injuries. smoke inhalation is not anything to take lightly, but it could have been worse. >>ccupant

but there was a delay in the alarm just no one noticed the fire for a short while until it was in advanced stages. >> thank you for joining us. appreciate it. coming up, we'll talk to some of the neighbors and get pretty harrowing accounts of what it was like to be awakened by the orange glow of these flames from the house next door. we're live on sherbrooke lane, back to you. another arcing inside later fire brought metro service to a halt, this time it happened at friendship heights around 8:00 last knighnight. firefighters worked to ventilate the smoke. the train operator actually reported the problem. the train was stopped at tenleytown and everyone got the off. metro closed all stations between vanness and medical center and riders were put on buses. no one was hurt. so far it doesn't look like service is being affected this morning, but if that changes, we'll update you in our nbc washington app. this morning 19-year-old

volunteer firefighter kevin v n swain is back home with his family. he spent more a week in the hospital after he and another firefighter were shot on the job. his fellow firefighters were by his side as he left the hospital on saturday. darscy spencer has more. >> reporter: volunteer firefighter kevin swain is wheeled out of the trauma center eight days after being shot on an emergency call. he was smiling and shaking hands as he made his way to a fire engine for the ride home. surrounded by his fellow morningside firefighters. >> got to be the brightest point at the end of a trying week for us as a fire department. >> reporter: firefighters were called to a home in temple hills to check on a man believed to be in medical distress. the homeowner opened fire when firefighters forced their way in. apparently believing someone was trying to break in. john ulmschneider died. swain, just 19, was shot fo

killed eight family members in what is described as an execution-style killing. on friday police found the victims shot in three separate homes in piketon, ohio about 60 miles outside of columbus. seven adults and a teen were killed, three children survived. the community is in mourning. >> heartbroken, shocked. wondering how could this possibly happen to us. >> rhoden family would leak to thank everyone for all the outpouring of prayers and support for their family. >> cincinnati area businessman has put up a $25,000 reward for information that leads to a conviction in this case. >> one man is dead and two officers injured after a shoot-out at a walmart in arizona. the officers were responding to a trespassing call and it wasn't long after they arrive that had shots started to ring out. the suspect shot at the first officer and then the second officer fired back. we know that both officers were wearing bulletproof s.

officers are in stable condition. there were shoppers inside the store but no one else was hurt. 9:07. a memorable night turns chaotic after two students are shot outside their prom. it happened in wisconsin last night. officers were able to respond immediately. the school was put on lockdown and police shot the suspect. he is still being monitored right now and there is no update on the student's condition at this time. prince's closest family friends and friends celebrated the music icon's life saturday after his remains were cremated. it was a private ceremony. prince was found unresponsive in an elevator thursday at his estate in minneapolis. authorities are not yet released a cause of death. and snl took to the airwaves on saturday to commemorate prince's life and performances

parkway between hount vernon estate and alexandria city line. the church street ramp from the inner loop of the beltway is also closed off to traffic. roads in and around the area will be closed for about another hour until 10:30. more than a year after a pedestrian bridge collapsed, a replacement is finally expected to go in. construction set to begin today on that bridge. it connects college park with bett berwyn heights. the bridge will not open to the public until fencing and electricity can can be installed. firefighters are still working to cape the fire in the shenandoah national park. so far the flames have consumed at least 9,000 acres since april 15th. fire crews from across the country have been called into fight the fire. there is worry that strong winds and no rain in the forecast could make things worse. the national park service suspects the fire may have been started by someone within the park. gop frontrunner donald trump is making his way to marylan

that's all in about an hour right after "news 4 today". one northern virginia county considering an alternative to regular ambulances. arlington is thinking of using motorcycle medics. fire officials think this will improve response times to emergency scenes. recommendations for the motorcycles along with a new fire station are set to be presented to the county council next month. was the fairfax county county firefighter found dead last week bullied? the chef addressed and online form apparently targeting nicole mittendorff. she disappeared in shenandoah national park and her body was found this week. her death was ruled a suicide. the chief released a statement saying that he would not tolerate bullying. it reads in part, quote, i assure you that my department cannot and will not tolerate bullying of any kind. at this time, we are respecting the privacy of firefighter paramedic mittendorff's family.

repd traveled about 19 miles. experts say it's unlikely the nation has an operational submarine that can fire multiple missiles. but they do say that north korea is making progress on the technology. those are army humvees falling from the sky. this happened in germany after a routine exercise went wrong earlier this week. someone posted this video online and it soon went viral. jim miklaszewski has more on the army's investigation. >> reporter: it was a routine exercise, a u.s. army heavy air drop over germany. performed thousands of times. so what could go wrong? turns out plenty. without warning, a two ton army humvee suddenly broke free from its rigging and slammed into the ground. it happened not just once, not twice, but three times. much to the amusement of the

young spotters who caught it all on video that has now gone viral. >> there is nothing left. >> reporter: with a price tag of up to $220,000 a piece, it was left in a mass of metal. totally unrecognizable. routinely the humvees glide out the back ramp of a c-130 cargo plane. heavy duty parachutes float the vehicles to a soft landing. but in this case all three riggings snapped free from the humvees. investigators will now try to determine if the rigging material was faulty or if military technicians failed to properly secure the load. fortunately no one was injured. but the focus now is to make sure it doesn't happen again. even once. jim miklaszewski, nbc news, the pentagon.
