person to the hospital. it all happened in silver spring. that's where we find derrick ward, he's live at the scene with some reaction from neighbors. >> reporter: good morning. we are in the 11700 block of sherbrooke lane in white oak. we're at the rear of that house that caught fire earlier today. you can see it was a devastating fire. the roof completely caved in in and that caused some of the problem for firefighters. happened at about 4:00 a.m. when fire crews got here, again this house is completely involved. we are told that the homeowner got out, but the door locked behind her. she wasn't able to get in and get the cellphone to call the fire department. fortunately neighbors have been alerted to this and they called the fire department which arrived here, but again, they had to pull out at one point because of that roof collapse. and this devastate being fire. and what was perhaps the saving grace here for what is left is that neighbors were

the xwlflow of the flames. >> like a ball of fire. >> i grabbed my phone and i call 911, i call my husband to go weighing up our neighbor to see if they can hear us. but i think at that time she already ran out. >> had to be scary, though. >> yeah, i know. >> reporter: we're told that the woman who was at the house at the time, she was the sole occupant, she was able to get out but she was taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalati inhalation. she returned and retrieved some belongings. but it had to be devastating. you can imagine seeing your home laid bare by flames like this. the cause remains under investigation. there was some damage to the house next door. the vinyl siding actually buckled from the intense heat that was on the scene of this fire. again, still under investigation. several crews responded. one injury, that woman appears to be out of the hospital now. but dealing with the loss of

this devastating fire in silver spring. we're live in white oak, derrick ward, news 4. back to you. another arcing insulator fire brought metro service to a halt. this time it happened in the friendship heights station around 8:00 last night. firefighters worked ventilate smoke between the tenleytown and friendship heights station. a train operator actually reported the problem and the train was stopped and everyone for the off. metro closed all stations between van ness and. so far is doesn't look like service is affected this morning. this morning 19-year-old volunteer firefighter kevin swain is back home with his family. he spent more than a week in the hospital after he and another firefighter were shot on the job. his fellow firefighters were by his side as he left the hospital on saturday. darcy spencer has more on how he's doing.
