>> reporter: and wendy and vance, we did tell you it's also very close to mount vernon and george washington's home and we're working off a cell phone here to get you a live report as soon as possible and fire and rescue have blocked off this portion of the parkway and police have blocked off what is the entrance to the george washington parkway and turning cars around and we said this involves a tour bus and this also involves a vehicle and we heard that someone in the mount vernon home and they relayed that information to me and they are making room at some point for medevac to come sure in this area. we're not sure exactly where that's going to happen and how many people will be airlifted out of here, but they have told us that and we know this will be shut down for several hours. we notice several tour folks coming through and people just visiting this area trying to get an idea of what exactly is going on. you can see a lot of them

kind of walking across the lawn here. they really can't drive out of here because it's shut down. the police are keeping it pretty tight, the perimeter, that is. i was talking to officers and they'll work to let us get a little bit closer so hopefully we can get closer and not get in their way throughout this broadcast, but for now we're working on the scene and getting as much information about this and a tour bus with multiple injuries right here in the mount vernon area. we'll send it back to you for now. >> now to the deadly terror attack in orlando. we're getting a dramatic picture of what happened inside that nightclub on that terrible night. >> for the first time some of the victims that were held hostage in the bathroom are telling their stories. our team coverage begins with nbc's jay gray who is live in orlando. jay? >> hey, wendy, jim and the details are just terrifying, chilling. a man and woman trapped inside the nightclub

one of them coming face to face with the gunman during the attack. >> oh, my god. people are getting shot. >> today for the first time since the attack, we're getting a closer look inside the chaos from a hostage. >> bullets start coming through the stall wall towards us. i was on the ground in a pool of blood. i wasn't sure whose it was. >> angel santiago and patience carter were shot and held at gun point by the alleged shooter omar mateen. >> we got trapped in there. the gunman was shooting his machine gun and we were all scrambling around in the bathroom screaming at the top of our lungs. >> carter says mateen was calm and deliberate during the attack. >> he pledges allegiance to isis and he started speaking and i believe after he got off the phone with 911 he started speaking in arabic, and he spoke to us directly in the bathroom. >> telling survivors to stay of

the phone as the massacre continued. >> i never thought in a million years that my eyes could witness something so tragic. mateen's current wife noor zahi salman tried to stop him. she was with him when he bought ammunition and a holster and drove him to the pulse nightclub weeks before the shooting spree. police and federal agents are investigating her role and the fbi is taking a serious and much closer look now at reports at those in orlando's gay community that he had been seen in gay nightclubs and pulse for years and communicated with gay men online. >> i recognized from the apps and i instantly blocked him because he was, like, very creepy in his messages and i blocked him immediately. >> the latest piece of a tragic puzzle here as the investigation continues. >> reporter: and we are told that president obama continues to get updates on that investigation. he'll travel here on thursday to

with the families of the victims. that's the latest live in orlando. back to you. >> thanks, jay. strong comments today from president obama on politics and terrorism. after a briefing on the battle against isis, the president delivered a scathing rebuke of donald trump's policies and his political rhetoric. >> there's no magic to the phrase radical islam, it's a political talking point. it's not a strategy. not once has an adviser of mine said man, if we really used that phrase we're going to turn this whole thing around. not once. we now have proposals from the presumptive republican nominee for president of the united states to bar all muslims from emigrates to america. we hear language that singles out immigrants, and suggests entire religious communities are complicit in violence. where does

lgbt community about the benefit of sports participation. tonight's event planned long before the shooting in orlando, but organizers will honor those victims during this game, and the gay men's chorus of washington will be singing. that alone is worth the price of admission. our coverage of the terror in orlando does continue online. you can see a list of vigils that are happening tonight and tomorrow at churches and community centers in our region. just head to our nbc washington app. students from a high school in wisconsin hadda i frightening beginning to their tour of d.c. today. that group had just arrived in the district from dulles airport when their tour bus caught fire. it happened at 6th street and rhode island avenue. all 34 people and two tour staff members were able to get off the bus. the fire started in the engine. firefighters were quickly able to put it out and a repce

and continue their tour. >> there were new concerns about the metro safe track project. just as the next phase is about to begin. metro is trying to figure out why a piece of maintenance equipment derailed near a safetrack work zone. that piece of equipment was then hit by a passing rail car that was carrying passengers. our transportation reporter adam tuss is in arlington this evening with details on this mishap. adam? >> reporter: that's right, wendy. it happened right here between boston and east falls church. you take a look at where the piece of rail equipment actually is and metro dealing with this at the time that the safetrack program is in its first phase. you are looking now of safe track, and that will involve a complete section of the rail line. >> it hits a snag with the

democratic national committee's database. nbc news has confirmed that two russian intelligence agencies breached the dnc's computer network. those digital spy his access to dnc emails, online chats and databases since at least last summer. those hammers targeted the dnc's opposition research on republican candidates. cybersecurity experts say russian president vladimir putin might be trying to learn more about donald trump and could be searching for secrets to exploit in the future. d.c. voters are heading to the polls for the last democratic primary in the country and while they're voting for a presidential candidate, residents will also be having a say and some very important local contest. news 4's tom sherwood is in ward 7, the site of a contentious council race

multiple times. one person on that bus has died, 16 others were on that bus and all of them injured. two people in the car were also transported. three of the injured, we're hearing, are in critical condition right now. the parkway is shut down in both directions. it's stratford lane and less than two miles from the mount vernon estate. david culver is on the scene ask trying to get closer to the actual crash site, but again, one person is dead and 18 injured and more on this as it comes into the live desk. i'm jim handly. vance, back to you. >> thanks, jim. a former military lawyer could be facing decades in prison when he's sentenced later today. a jury found andrew schmuhl guilty of the near deadly home invasion attack on a couple in mclean, virginia. >> julie carey was in the fairfax county courtroom when that verdict was read. >> well, a statement just issued by the victim's law firm says this verdict marx t

of closure for leo fisher and his wife sue duncan and both victims were left with permanent injuries as a result of the attackvr;= and it brings consoln that he'll spend many years behind bars. >> no react as jurors found him guilty of all seven charges including abduction and aggravated malicious wounding. >> victim leo fisher who still bears the scars of the attack sat quietly, but once the jury left the courtroom he embraced family and friends. the other victim, sue duncan, was not present. jurors clearly reekt jed the unusual involuntary intoxication defense. that he was so heavily medicated for back problems and other ailments he didn't know what he was doing the night of the incident, november 9, 2014. schmuhl was bent on revenge when he burst into t

and terrorized fisher and duncan for three hours, tasing, stabbing and shooting them and then leaving them both for dead. the attack came just two weeks after fisher law firm fired schmuhl's wife alicia. schmuhl and his wife were caught by police soon after they fled. in a bizarre twist, he was wearing only a diaper. indeed, schmuhl appeared drugged and dazed in the hospital that night, but prosecutors say it was because he downed a handful of drugs during the getaway. schmuhl's attorneys tried to convince jurors that alicia was the mastermind and a drugged schmuhl was following orders and jurors didn't buy that either. a statement from the victim's law firm which reads in part, we are grateful that the jury's guilty verdicts in the prosecutor for andrew schmuhl mark the beginning of closure for him. this was a horrific ordeal no one can fly

details. david? david, what can you tell us? >> reporter: when we last saw you we were positioned on the other side of this. i'm going to step out of the way and you can see it a little bit better. just look behind me. here is the scene of this crash involving a shuttle bus. you can see that shuttle bus also involving another vehicle. we are told two people were in that other vehicle inside the tour bus, several people -- 17 of those were injured. we know one person has died of the injuries. we know three of them are in critical condition. now this is involving two vehicles and again, a shuttle bus and a sedan of some sort. what we're hearing from u.s. park police is that at some point driving down the gw parkway here the sedan swerved,

swerve and roll over multiple times ending up where you see it right now. i was talking to some sources as i was making my way to the scene and they tell me part of the complicated matter here is onboard that shuttle bus are foreign nationals and there was a communication issue when they were trying to work in the emergency evacuations here and trying to get people out here safely. they were having a struggle there, but we know, as you can see now, that one person has died. multiple injuries. this scene will be shut down for hours. there's a lot more information to be gathered here and we are out here and we'll continue to gather it and bring you the latest on news 4 and on nbc washington.com. vance and wendy, back to you. >> that rampage inside a nightclub in orlando once again has sparked debate about the gun laws in our country. >> tonight

went to a virginia gun shop to hear what gun owners are saying now and he spoke to senator tim kane about what he thinks congress should do. >> reporter: why do so many gun owners favor assault-style weapons? i asked katie myers, training director in chantilly, virginia. >> it is a sport, and i think that's what we lose sight of. it is a sport, and an olympic sport, as a matter of fact. >> reporter: some people need them for work like police and security officers. >> i do have several ar-15s because we operate a security company in virginia and we are required to use this under some special security details. >> senator tim kane says he hopes the orlando mass shootings will prompt congress to take action. >> we do have a federal list of prohibited categories of people that are barred by law from having weapons. i support a proposal to add to that list folks on the terrorist

the attacker went inside and killed the officer's partner. after a standoff, the couple's 3-year-old child was rescued and the suspect himself was killed. prosecutors say that killer was known to french intelligence services. they're trying to establish whether he was inspired by the attack in orlando or whether the attack was directed from overseas. the alexandria man accused of joining and then quitting isis will remain in prison until his trial. mohammed khweis traveled to syria and became disillusioned and he surrendered to kurdish forces. at a detention hearing today his attorney argued that his change of heart means he's not a threat to the united states, but a judge disagreed saying anyone who knowingly joins an organization that decapitates itsap

a demonstration that showed just how dangerous speeding can be for pedestrians. this video shows what happens to a pedestrian when a car is going only 35 miles an hour. you can see the driver does not have time to stop and the pedestrian would be -- that's a dummy, by the way. the pedestrian would be severely injured. police say the faster a driver is going the more likely it is a pedestrian hit by a car is going to die. police held today's demonstration in an effort to discourage aggressive driving. child advocates are praising this technology. it's a new feature coming to gm vehicles and it is an industry first. it's designed to help children from being forgotten in hot cars. the system monitors the rear doors if they open and then close ten minutes within the car starts the system will sound a chime and it will display a

to check the rear seats. this system will be featured in the 2017 gmc acadia. >> prosecutors got their chance to question that man from ashburn, virginia, the business executive who is accused of killing his esstranged wife. his name is castillo, and he demeed murdering his wife. the mother of five killed herself. today prosecutors asked castillo about a woman he was seeing at the time while he was in divorce proceedings with michelle. that woman said she and castillo decideto, in her words, just be friends shortly before michelle's death. today prosecutors aed castillo why he still called that woman 460 times when he was in jail. castillo said he wanted to share a life with her. the watergate hotel

this attack was so brutal that we decided not to show you some parts of it. a man beaten outside a 7-eleven in new carrollton. the victim had to have surgery, a lot of surgery, to repair his face. it was that savage. today his attacker was sentenced to 15 years in prison. our prince georges county bureau chief tracee wilkins picks up the story. >> reporter: it was a chance encounter between strangers at a new carrollton 7-eleven gone wrong quickly. juan velasquez was beaten and kicked and stopped by 19-year-old kalen miller. >> he wa

night. the video is too graphic to show the entire attack. once unconscious and on the ground i counted at least 18 punches before miller kicks velasquez in the head. miller's friend comes back and takes his wallet and then miller returns again and stomps velasquez repeatedly. >> he did lean against the doors of the 7-eleven in what appeared to be a way to keep his balance and be able to use maximum force to deliver these blows. >> unless you knew velasquez before the attack you wouldn't know that the shape of his face has changed. he underwent reconstructive surgery to rebuild the left side of his skull. he has a metal plate holding his head together and screws helping to keep his eye socket in lace. >> the family listened to the explanation for what happened. >> during the trial he said he was a victim and my husband was the person who committed the crime. >> today miller apologized saying i apologized to the court and especially the victim.
