areas saw roads that were flooded. in other places it wasn't the water so much as falling trees creating problems. we have team coverage and it's been right up to doug kammerer and what's coming next? >> what's coming next is what's happening right now. just take a look outside of the studios with northwest d.c. and we have incredibly heavy rain and notice the flag not blowing all that much and the rain is coming down and coming down hard around our region. we did see stronger wind gusts a couple of minutes ago and that rain coming through the d.c. area right now and that has prompteded the national weather service to issue a flash flood warning for washington. if you live in the d.c. area that was the alert you were getting there on your phone saying you were under a flash flood warning. notice where the warnings are, back to the west watching this storm right here and this is the same storm along the same trail that we're going to be seeing. so we have numerous storms one in fairfax county in and around the beltway now and another one backar

jefferson county west virginia and another one toward montgomery up near 70 in frederick and possible, we did have a tornado warning in that area a little bit earlier. so it would be interesting to see what happens there. the lightning has been prolific all afternoon and we've seen hundreds of lightning strikes in just a couple of minutes and that's happening right now toward downtown. i'm going to zoom on into the storm and you see all of this lightning right through downtown right now. you don't need this during the evening rush and that's exactly what we have and then you have the flash flood warnings in effect until after 8:00. this one goes until 8:45. we've seen a lot of rain and inches of rain have fallen and now we're expecting more with this storm. we will expect flash flooding to occur, and it will occur in areas that normally see the potential for flash flooding. so if you're driving, turn around, don't drown. make sure you stay indoors if you can. if you don't have to be out for the next couple of hours good idea to stay indoors and the fl

two weeks ago wienke was arrested for carrying a gun on the grounds and he's pleaded not guilty and is awaiting his next court date, but an affidavit obtained today by news 4 says there's reason to believe wienke was plotting to attack before his arrest. the agent in this filing said when wienke arrived at 7:30 a.m. he was found to be carrying a knife, two radio devices, incapacitating spray, an infrared camera and black hand kufrs and security seized some of those items and allowed wenching toe enter the offers and 90 minutes later before a meeting of senior agency officials, they went to wienke and checked him again, they said and in their filing he was found carrying a loaded.22 caliber revolver and hollow point bullets. no answer when we went to wienke's martinsburg home in downtown martinsburg, and no response from their attorney. there's probable cau

planning to commit workplace violence and against dhs officials in the building. wienke's next-door neighbor said he saw the feds canvassing the house in recent days. >> i expected them to move down, but he was hardly ever up here. i mean, you would just see him occasionally up here. he was always clean cut, nice guy. >> wienke was released from custody after his arrest, quote, pending further court proceedings. he's pleaded not guilty to the gun charge and no response when we sought out wienke or his attorney for comment. >> thanks, scott. a well-known rabbi is trying to appeal his six and a half year sentence. rabbi freundel secretly recorded women at a ritual bath in georgetown. last year he pleaded guilty to 52 misdemeanor counts of voyeurism

current sentence is illegal and his lawyers want that sentence reduced to one year. it could be weeks or even months before a panel announces its decision. tonight friends of murder victim michelle castillo said that justice has been served. a jury recommended that her estranged husband braulio should be sentenced to life in prison plus 16 years for her death. he is an ashburn ceo. he was found guilty yesterday by the same jury. today the castillo children testified how the murder has had an impact on them. our bureau chief, julie carey will have reaction to the sentencing recommendation later in our broadcast. a lot of metro riders are listeni to the calls to stay away from the blue, orange and silver lines during this next safety surge. ridership on those three lines was down about 75% today. many riders h b

arrested on the new jersey side of the holland tunnel after a whole bunch of weapons were found in the trunk of their truck. they were headed toward new york city in a brightly-colored vehicle when an officer pulled them over for a cracked windshield. the officers discovered guns, handguns, rifles, ballistic vests and drugs inside the van. two senior law enforcement officials say the three suspects are gun enthusiasts and that they don't suspect terrorism. some new details out of orlando tonight as the investigation into the nation's worst mass shooting continues to unfold. nbc's jay gray reports now on today's crime scene and a visit by the u.s. attorney general and more on the friend of a gunman who tried to warn the fbi years ago. >> reporter: streets are opening up again around the crime scene now. the footprint of the investigationhrinkin

stormy weather in our area for several hours now. doug, what's the latest? >> the latest, guys, continues to be that severe thunderstorm warning in effect until 7:00. that's from loudoun county again. very dangerous storms continuing to move on through our region and we just continue to see these develop across the area and they'll be developing right on through 8:00, probably

tonight and take a look, the national harbor where we're looking through the area right now just starting to end down toward national harbor and you can see on the radar, this line we saw a line move down to the south and now we're watching those storms developing back toward leesburg and back toward prince george's county and this storm was severe earlier and no longer severe and has prompted flash flooding in and around d.c. we've seen video of flash flooding -- or flooded roadways in and around the d.c. metro areas so please watch out there. this is the one storm i'm really watching the severe thunderstorm warning until 7:00 and let's go ahead and zoom on in around the leesburg area and we'll see where the storm is along route 7 as you come out of the sterling area and over toward leesburg and extremely heavy rain and let's go street level around the leesburg area and show you what we're talking about. here ate extension of the dulles toll road and just down to the south and in and around

market street and seeing the very heavy rain making its way down 7th and we saw the fire around the world offaldorf area. a new storm and this is a brand new one that just developed around the gaithersburg and rockville area and that one moving up to the north. notice the red here in through d.c. and fairfax county and back towards loudoun and that's the flash flood warnings and they're into effect until 8:00. we have seen flash flooding with these storms moving through and we're not done just yet. we have the boundary moving down to the south, but take a look to the north up around hagerstown and we've seen storm after storm form in this area, one, two, three and they've all moved down into our region. so we're not done just yet and it will be a rather bumpy evening and temperaturewise, 72 degrees and winds out of the north at 7 miles an hour after the rain came through. we hit 90 and t

garage door because of a power outage. a teal toyota camry with a pink deer and a decal that says lax girl. a witness tells news 4 that this was the most dramatic transformer fire he'd ever seen. tonight, hundreds of customers who live along clarendon boulevard in arlington are hoping their power will be restored soon. the fire has been out for hour, but repairs are still under way. firefighters had to use a foam truck from the national airport because water is not effective on a transformer fire. officials tell us they hope to have the lights back on for all their customers by 10:00 tonight. d.c.'s largest homeless shelter rarely seems like a place of optimism, but a 16-year-old is about to head to college on a scholarship. >> her name is destiny tyree and graduated two years early with a

storm that came through d.c. prompting the flash flooding is moving out toward the chesapeake. another severe thunderstorm warning around hagerstown and this is the storm i'm really watching. this is another strong storm around the city of frederick down towards urbana and that one moving down 270, but this one right here and some really heavy rainmaking its way through leesburg and this one moving down to the south and east and hail reported with this, too. on the track over toward herndon at 718 and reston at 7:32 and moving at 25 miles an hour and maybe closer to 7:15 for you folks in the reston areas that moves on down to the south and east and there is lightning associated with that storm and notice the red here. we're starting to clear a little bit in d.c. and that will set the stage for these storms and they're moving right toward the district through fairfax county and more along i-95, but the red indicates the flash flood

tonight and we have seen flash flooding ongoing in parts of the city. now the wider picture showing everybody in purple and that's the severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 9:00 and more back towards la rhea which has been hit more times so far and paige county will get hit again and nothing severe in that region and this is all part of a storm system that's moving our way. >> look at this. this is the shot out from the tower cam and you'll notice, see that line right there? that's the rain. we're looking at no rain here, but then the rain picks up and that's the rain shaft coming out of the cloud and coming out of the storm making its way through loudoun county and wends out of the northeast at 7 miles per hour and tomorrow we get to 88 and thursday a high of 87 degrees and now thursday another chance for severe weather and this is going to be the case here as we move on through thay

are you prepared to tell us what in the world is wrong with strasbourg. >> it was worrisome when you hear he was krached before his start last night. there is a silver lining today, if there's one because strasbourg missing his start, is thinking long term. he's fought through neck tightness and twisted ankle and we've seen many of the minor injuries turn major so he did the smart thing last night and he rested. the manager dusty baker says he's hopeful that stephen strasbourg with the upper back strain will be able to make his next scheduled start which is sunday. the nats made the decision to -- he tweaked his back while working out on an off day, but pain meds and treatment didn't cure it completely.
