were killed and four from the dallas police department and the fifth was a dallas area rapid transit officer. >> president obama spoke earlier this morning and said he was horrified by the attack, and called it vicious, calculated and despicable. let's start with gabe gutierrez at the scene. >> reporter: it was a protest against police violence and then violence erupted. 11 officers shot this morning, five of them are dead and much of downtown dallas still on lockdown and we just learned authorities finished sweeping the area for explosives and found none. after this week's shooting deaths of a black man in louisiana and minnesota, and what began as a peaceful protest in downtown dallas turned suddenly into chaos.

ing overnight, shocked confusion. dallas coming to grips with an unfolding national tragedy. >> we saw a baby stroller left in the street, and i guess the parent was in shock. >> and a tense standoff under way, and a suspect cornered and exchanging gunfire and then a woman taken into custody near the garage and two people seen leaving in a mercedes stopped and questioned. >> told our negotiators that the end is coming and he's going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning law enforcement, and that there are bombs all over the place in this ra

downtown. >> within minutes bystanders heard a blast and by 2:25 local time that suspect was dead and police swept the area for possible explosive devices and found none and a massive investigation under way after the deadliest attack in the u.s. on law enforcement since 9/11. this all happened not far from daily plaza. this city is grieving after another national tragedy. at least five officers murdered in the line of duty. willie, savannah. >> thank you. >> it bares repeating, this is the deadliest attack against the police in the u.s. since 9/11. >> can you see it on the officers standing here, on their

out here all night dealing with the tragedy at the loss of their beloved colleagues and friends and you had some that showed up with protest with anger towards officers who are praying for and standing in solidarity with the officers. >> this morning officials with d.a.r.t., confirming the death of brent thompson, the 43-year-old officer killed in the line of duty since 1989, and he joined the force in 2009. d.a.r.t. posting this, as you can imagine, our hearts are broken and this is something that touches every part of our organization. three other d.a.r.t. officers were shot in the attack and the other officers shot and killed worked for the dallas police department.

>> we actually run the transit system and we have train lines that go through downtown and there's a rail station that was very close to where the protests was going on, the event was going on, and our officers were there to make sure that our patrons and customers riding the trains and buses were able to get on and off the trains and buses in a safe and efficient manner, and that travel on the trains and buses was not impacted by the event nearby. >> was there any indication to you or dallas police there was anything suspicious, was there reason to believe there would be heightened concern? >> we did not have any reason to believe that we were going to have something to occur of this nature. i must say even though we didn't

shawn, what strikes you about the facts you see so far this morning? when you think about something getting out of control at a protest, you don't think of snipers try ange lating. try ange yao lating. appears thd out. whether they were looking for the right opportunity and peaceful protests in dallas presented that opportunity. this appears to me to have been planned for some period of time. i'm sure we'll find out they were communicating as this event unfolded and talking to each other whether by radio or cell phone. this is in my opinion everything that i've seen, these are trained people that have been planning something like these are trained people who have been planning something like this for a time. >> eyewitnesses said they saw

and this goes to shawn's point that this was something well-planned out and thought out. how much planning and how long would it have taken to arrange this? >> watching this last night, it was almost like you were watching a firefight in the middle east, not something you would see on american streets. what bothers, i think, so many people if you want to say both sides whether it's the black lives matter, white lives matter, and we all matter because it's red blood on the street, and many police of the 1 million in america, they feel like they have targets on their back, like fry them like bacon, and then we see this.

a balance there and right now i think the men and women in blue really feel like that target is getting bigger on their backs. >> let me ask you, shawn, about what we know about the suspects, which is very little. we have the dallas mayor on a little earlier that said the suspects who are in custody aren't talking, and they are being very tight lipped and the suspect cornered in a garage that was killed in a firefight with police said things like the end is coming so you are talking about pretty defiant hardened suspects. what do you make of that? >> we don't know the motivation and hopefully that will come out in this investigation, and that will go on here in the next few weeks, but it appears it's potentially connected to the incidents that we saw in the last couple of days with law enforcement officers involved in the shootings and this type of demonstration. when they talk about the end of near, it talks abot

out to launch some type of attack and were looking for the appropriate time and opportunity, but statements like that demonstrate, i say the clear defiance for law enforcement and the need to make this very strong statement. >> it feels like we wake up every morning to a new normal, and is the new normal for police officers, where they have to sweep for snipers on the tops of buildings? >> there's a term that police officers use and it's called professional paranoia where you are always sweeping behind you as well as in front of you because you feel like this could happen to you. the reality has come home. my background, part of it as a hostage negotiating, so we had a barricaded subject but they may have well been connected with isis because they were not trying to talk their way out and all they wanted to do, it appears, at least in one case,

update on that. i am proud of him. he's been working so hard these last few hours, and we have been with families and we have been trying to make sure that the city is safe this morning, and i believe it is. chief brown. >> thank you, mayor. we're hurting. our profession is hurting. dallas officers are hurting. we are heartbroken. there are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city. all i know is that this must stop. this divisiveness.

between our police and our citizens. citizens.% to update you on what's % transpired since to update you on what transpired since we last spoke, let me walk through the standoff that had occurred -- or that was occurring at el centro on the second floor of the college there in downtown dallas. we cornered one suspect, and we tried to negotiate for several hours negotiations broke down and we had an exchange of gunfire with the suspect and we saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on the -- on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was.

other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger. the suspect is deceased. as a result of detonating the bomb. the reporting that the suspect killed himself is not accurate. we have confirmed that he's been deceased because of the detonation of the bomb. our hostage negotiator did an exceptional job getting this suspect to talk before he died. during the hours of negotiating that eventually broke down. i want to share with you some of the comments from this suspect. the suspect said he was upset about black lives

he said he was upset about the recent police shootings. the suspect said he was upset at white people. the suspect stated he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers. the suspect stated he will eventually -- that we will eventually find the ieds. the suspect stated he was not affiliated with any groups and he stated that he did this alone. this suspect said other things that are part of this investigation so we can make sure that everybody associated with this tragic event is brought to justice. so as the mayor said, we won't ex

other suspects we have interviewed or looked at or their status until we get further into this investigation and get closer to a conclusion of what -- who are all involved. but let me just say, just some closing comments about dallas police officers. and d.a.r.t. police officers. some of the bravest men and women you would ever want to be associated with, you see video footage after video footage of them running toward gunfire from an elevated position with no chance to protect themselves, and to put themselves in harm's way, to make sure citizens can get to a place

please join me in applauding these brave men and women who do this job under great scrutiny, under great vulnerability, who literally risk their lives to protect our democracy. we don't feel much support most days. let's not make today most days. please, we need your support. to be able to protect you from men like these who carried out this tragic, tragic event. pray for these families. i spoke with the

gabe gutierrez is standing by with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning. we just heard from officials here and the police chief gave the most detailed account so far of what the suspect said to police while he was barricaded inside that parking garage this morning, specifically he said he didn't want to just kill police officers but white police officers and the suspect said he was upset about the recent police shootings across the country, of course over the past few days we have seen those protests in louisiana and minnesota, and there has been a lot of anger throughout the country, but up until now those protests have been peaceful for the most part, and they have had a few arrests in few parts of the country, but this suspect, again, said he wanted to kill white police officers, and the suspect told police he was acting alone and he also said according to the police chief he was upset with the black lives matter movement. this contradicts -- doesn't

searching for an individual. you are getting a live picture of the capital dome. we know the sergeant in arms in the senate said this lockdown was issued -- this alert was issued for the building and for the capitol visitors' center because of the police activity and the office buildings are open. normally the galleries there inside the captol building would be open at 9:00 this morning, but at this point as we are short of 9:30, 9:20 right now, we don't expect there would have been visitors inside the capitol building and we don't know to what degree staff is in the capitol or represents or senators are in the building, but we can

now that the u.s. capitol building itself and the visitors' center are both locked down right now as capitol police are searching for an individual and that's something we have been able to learn so far for what is happening at the capitol building. this lockdown would have started a few minutes ago, probably around 9:15, and as we are looking at this live picture, not much activity to see at this point, but the indication we are getting right now is that capital police are moving possibly around the grounds there and are inside the capital building looking for an individual. you are looking at a picture at staff wary hall in the capitol building and we see somebody off in the distance and we don't see police officers in this particular part of the building and you saw somebody walking

vantage point for a moment. we know votes that have been scheduled for today have been delayed and that is coming from our scott mcfarland, and the capitol has been locked down and you see a police officer there standing at the door there in sta staff wary hall. a notice went out and we believe two people there that work on the hill telling them to close, lock and stay away from all doors and windows, to sort of make sure they are aware of where any emergency equipment they might need, and telling people to shelter in place and silence their cell phones to not draw attention

wherever they may be inside the capitol property. we understand there would have been full staff on the hill in the capitol building and office buildings surrounding it, but as a result of the lockdown those folks are being told to stay wherever they are in the capitol building and not to move around, and this is coming as we have moved through the night and this morning incident in dallas, texas, involving a dozen police officers and the deaths of five police officers and several others have been shot from a sniper as a black lives matter protest was happening in the city, and as we look here, there's now word the capitol has been placed on lockdown and there's a search as we speak

capitol as a result of police came across information they need to find a potentially suspicious person, and as we approach 9:25 on this friday morning a. very busy friday morning as it has been as we have watched news come from texas, now word again that the u.s. capitol building is on lockdown and the office buildings surrounding it at this point are open, and they would have been busy in the offices this morning as there would have been votes in the chambers on the hill, and at this point that has been suspended and the votes have been delayed. scott is joining me as we continue this coverage of the

>> we have a source telling us capitol police and law enforcement on the hill are looking for somebody who they suspect might have gone past the security checkpoint with a suspicious package, and lockdowns are consistent with the fear that somebody has brought a firearm on the grounds, and right now we have a source on capitol hill, a woman potentially, she has a suspicious item got past one of the many checkpoints on the hill, and if you have not visited the hill, every public entrance, either a garage or door is armed with two officers, and everybody who enters the grounds aree

and if somebody gets past one of the checkpoints, they change the technique and protocols and that often precipitates a lockdown. >> there are several entrances to each of the office buildings on capitol hill, and the capitol itself, not too many entrances, and any idea where this person may have entered? >> we have a note that the lockdown is at the visitor's senator, and each has two or three entrances, and capitol visitors center has many as well. this is a busy day, and a lot of checkpoints and perhaps the maximum number of checkpoints because it's expected to be a high volume

to reduce the number to a couple possibilities, but if you lockdown the capitol building and the visitors's center, it could be she did not go through the other centers. >> business was supposed to begin in the senate side at least starting at 10:00 this morning, and we got the word around 9:15 there had been a lockdown put in place at the capitol and the capitol visitor's center, and doesn't look like there would have been visitors from the public, but moving outside the building and as we look at one of the outside vantage points, you were able to see the grounds just a little bit, and we could tell there didn't seem to be a lot of activity outside the building, and so one might assume that the search happening might be hni

building itself, or inside the visitors center to make sure nobody who should not be in there was in there and to make sure they have an understanding of what that person may have been carrying. >> if you have a lockdown on the capitol grounds, what does that entail? here's the instructions given out when you have a lockdown. all staff and visitors at the capitol, close, lock and stay away from doors and windows, which, of course, there are many, and take emergency kits and move to your offices assigned shelter in location, and that's where where the chiefs of staff and scheduling assistants have their desks in the back center part of the offices and if you are not near your office take shelter in the office nearest to you, and you go to the nearest open door and lock down with those staffers, and you silence your phones, and while they are on lockdown y

can't enter or exit. you don't just go to your desk and hangout there, you go to the nearest place in which you can take shelter and get behind a locked door with strangers or colleagues, and i was in a lockdown in a building when cars backfired, and i was locked down in a closet of the raburn building that i didn't know very well, and you go to the nearest place you can find that is secured and locked. about a dozen times in the last three years, people have been stopped at capitol grounds checkpoints with firearms and in each of those instances, the person was stopped along with the firearm. if this is a case where somebody got past the checkpoint with a suspicious item, that would be a first in recent years where somebody was not stopped at the checkpoint with something suspicious. >> as we

now, i want to reset for everybody who might be just joining us, this is the extended news coverage of a locke down of the united states capitol that was put in place just after 9:00 this morning, there was a woman that made it through security with something suspicious, and they moved to lockdown the capitol building and the capitol visitor's center as well, and searching for the woman. we mentioned the fact that the visitors center would have just been getting ready to open and the chambers, the galleries for the house and senate chambers just opened on the house side, and on the senate side scheduled to hope now and that's not

buildings that surround the capitol itself are open as usual, and scott mcfarland with me now, and it's safe to assume staffers are moving around on the grounds. >> most friday mornings you have a skeleton staff and no votes or members of congress in town. this is different. at least three u.s. house committees were scheduled to meet, including the house of benghazi committee, and friday is always the earliest votes of the week because they want to get on a plane, and so an uncommonly busy friday morning for something like this to happen. not that security protocols are different, and this activity happening on a quiet friday morning would still trigger a lockdown, and between 11,000 and 15,000 work as staffers in the u.s. congress. we have

producer, and security is trying to look for a individual that snuck past the screening with something suspicious. magnetometers. >> if we are able to switch back to the other camera angle, we were in the center of the capitol building and you can see off in the distance police officers moving through the building, and you saw one with the reflective vest on and another one closer to the foreground here standing at the entrance of this round space inside the capitol building, this is part of the lockdown situation where you are going to have some officers who are moving through this building, the massive building, trying to make sure that they -- there's no threat searching for the person they are looking for and others who would seem to be more stationary and still at a heightened level of alert trying to assess the space

there's any cause for concern here in the hall, and i can't help but note this is happening against the back drop of the activity in dallas over the last 12 hours or so where we learned that there was a protest that was happening, a demonstration happening in downtown dallas, the black lives matter organization having come together to protest the police-involved shooting in louisiana and minnesota, and someone, we know at least one person open fire on police officers there in dallas. five officers were killed and a total of 12 people shot in that incident, so that is forefront in peoples' minds and particularly in the minds of law enforcement this morning as we -- as they are going to be obviously very cautious and moving through the capitol building in washington but aware of what happened in dallas as well, as officers here searc

woman there on the capitol grounds. you are seeing two vantage points now. inside that staff wary hall. we know in the capitol building and visitor's center there's a search happening for somebody that got past security. >> there are 1,700 or so u.s. capitol police officers, and you have a large force to respond to anything like this. pictu picture capitol hill, and you see it here, and beneath the ground there's a spider web of tunnels, funnels that connect each individual building on the u.s. capitol grounds to each other and you can walk from one corner of the senate building to the raburn house office building and do so completely beneath ground and there are funnels from the capitol buildin

to the house side and senate side and there's an elaborate web of tunnels that need to be policed and there are metal detecters, even though you already got yourself through a house building, they check you again before you can go to the capitol building, and there's so much space to cover but it's also worth noting that when you lock it down, you significantly minimize the people going through those hallways. the hall this time of day with votes scheduled should be hopping right now, and members walking to and from their offices and you see how empty it is, and you see nothing but u.s. capitol police officers. and by ordering the lockdown, they minimize the traffic they have to work through to check all of these spaces, the many spaces above and beneath the ground. >> you think about the idea of locking down a building of this siz a
