morning. news4's derrick ward is live at the scene with what happened and the latest in the investigation. hey, derrick. >> good morning, we're here in the 6800 block of walker mill road in capitol heights. the scene is being held some several hours after the shooting was reported. what they're looking at now is the two vehicles towed out of the suv and the small car behind it, part of the investigation into exactly what happened here. we do know that people gunfire, it happened at 2:45 this morning in the 6800 block of walker mill road. police and fire arrived. they had quite a situation on their hand. six had been shot. we learned that two of the people have died. we only know that they were both teens. four people remain hospitalized. not a lot of information about the circumstances around this. only that it all happened in a parking lot.

the headquarters interviewing various witnesses. what we're doing is asking the public if they know anything at all, give us a call. 866-411-tips. there is a reward on the line. any information you have, reach out to us. >> reporter: again, we don't have anything in terms of identities any of the victims. two cars have been taken away. maybe one more car will be towed away as part of evidence into this multiple shooting. it left two people dead. we' county. derrick ward, news4, back to you. there is another story we've been following out of prince george's county as well. another fatal house fire. county officials saying a person died at this home in landover. three others were hurt after the flames broke out at a home on ballinger avenue. 9:01 and we'll check the forecast on this sunday because the temperatures are going up, up, up. >> that's right. it looks like in addition to the

>> that's right. right now, though, a chill in the air. we're in the 50s metro area. it is near 70, 40 miles north and west of us. clouds are passing over the metro area. by 10:00, near 70. near 80 during the afternoon. record is 82 in washington set back in 1996. then some showers moving in this evening. a look at up and down trend here over the next ten days is coming this half hour. >> thank you very much. developing now out of the line to save a young girl has died. d.c. fire says the man suffered a heart attack as he tried to prevent the 8-year-old from being hit by a car in northeast. however, the girl was hit on chillem place. d.c. fire officials say she was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. driver who caused this deadly chain reaction crash in northeast is expected to face additional charges. police say he fled the scene. d.c. police say the man was

on, rear ended another car, and then flipped over. the woman in the rear ended car died. four other adults and a child were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. the 41st marine corps marathon is under way right now. 28,000 runners making their way through the 26.2 mile race. it is outlined in red on your screen. it will end at the marine corps war memorial. >> let's take a quick look at the finish line here. the first about 10:15. the first female, 10:45. that is a fast pace. we're over an hour into the 26.2 mile race right now. jim hanley made his way over to the finish line. jim, i know that golf cart ride was tough. >> it must have been exhausting. >> i got to tell you. i made it here in record time. these two gentleman are the first finishers.

one from phoenix, one from new york, actually poland. i want to ask you, number one, what was your time coming across? >> what was the feeling coming across and winning this marathon? >> it is big for this year i'm starting paralympics. >> how long have you been a cycler? >> hand cycler, a year and a half ago. >> i came to be as a hand cycler, i was part of the air force, got to thank all of the military members out here supporting us and all of the sponsors here that made this race possible, but came to be i actually took an airplane into the ground at about 150 miles an hour and was looking for something cardio vascular after losing my legs. >> how long do you have to train

good morning. temperatures around the region are beginning to climb into the 60s. a great day for a brisk walk, a

have it, warm. in fact, by mid afternoon, our temperatures will be around 80. a delightful day coming up. we'll have more sunshine during the afternoon as well. a chill returns tomorrow. we warm again, midweek, a look at all of that. the big changes on the way is coming in just a few minutes. tom, thank you very much. hey, you know there is a marathon going on? >> i do. >> thousands of people are running. it is the 41st marine corps marathon happe a marathon in the world and they'll be at it for at least a few more hours unless you're one of the finish finishers. this is a live look. everyone is pacing themselves. the starting line koezed a few minutes ago. david culver joining us live from mile 11. david, runners are inching closer towards you by the second. i see some in the background. >> angie and adam. they have made their way

runners coming around hanes point. that is mile 11 into mile 12. they're going to a food station, picking up on energy boosters and making their way around to the hydration station getting gatorade water and continuing along. i want to show you what is behind us. what the runners are coming from and that is the wear blue essential section. you can look at some of the video. we walked by there a short time ago. there are 300 flags held by volunteers. they're as the military families. it is a moving part. you have to think. this is the midway point of the race. this is the place where you're 11 miles in. you have nor go. about halfway there and you need tho that motivation. you need the inspiration and they run through this section here. this run to remember, and you see the flags, the flags have the name of some of the fallen. you also see faces. it is incredibly moving. you see just these pictures put

going. i talked to colleen woukins. she was here early this morning. here is what she has to say about the run to remember section. >> where the placards are with the faces of the fallen, when they go through there, there are nothing but foot steps. it is total silence. and you will see people going off to the side to find their posters, to touch them, to hug them just to have a nt they come through the tunnel of flags and they're embraced with cheers, with clapping, some of them will stop and hug. some of them with high five you and some will move on. >> i can tell you from just before the run to remember section on the other side of it, you can see that obviously they're physically worn, they're getting to the midway section. when they come on this side of it, they're rejuvenated. they find the motivation and

remembering his son who had fallen. he ran this a couple of years ago, that section is what kept him going to the finish line. i'll send it back to you guys. starting to get warm out there for sure. >> it sure is climbing into the 60s and by the time a lot of people finish, which is around noon time, it is going to be warm for running a marathon. >> really getting almost dangerously warm. certainly if you're over experting because this time of the year it is rare to be around 80 degrees and take a look outside. the view from the storm team4 tower camera. we have clouds coming and going which is a blessing fort runners. they aren't getting baked by the sun. we have cloudiness around. breaks in the clouds the rest of the morning and going mostly sunny during the afternoon. look at our temperatures hour by hour. we'll be quickly climbing into the 70s by late morning and then hovering near 80 degrees mid

we may actually briefly for a few minutes between 3:00 and 4:00, get right up there near the record high this afternoon. and at the same time, we have beautiful autumn color and a beautiful sunrise this morning. this photo taken from the key bridge by our own mark segraves covering the event for the marine corps marathon. the potomac river sunrise, it was gorgeous. lasted a few minutes. as we look, going forward here in time into the afternoon hours, this area zone of rain coming into the panhandle of west virginia, western maryland, northern shenandoah valley around 5:00. that is a cold front and as it comes through it may trigger thunder and lightning around 5 or 6:00 p.m. as it moves through. and then comes right into the metro area between 7, l, 9:00 this evening as it rolls through, don't be surprised to hear rum baems thunder. not a lot of rain as it is moving and by 11:00 it is gone and the cloud cover begins to

during the day tomorrow we'll be around 60 in the afternoon on monday. a bit breezy, too, as we get into the afternoon hours. the winds will diminish. for trick or treaters on monday evening, it looks like great weather for roaming neighborhoods. we'll be in the 50s and just a few clouds coming through. chilly, but dry for monday evening. then on tuesday, back into the mid-60s during the afternoon and partly sunny. then a couple more days of unusually warm weather as we get into november. we'll bemb thursday, near 80 degrees and another front comes in on thursday afternoon and evening, likely triggering more rain showers but not a lot and then it dries out and we get cool again as we get toward next weekend. friday and saturday highs around 60 and a week from today, into the mid-60s, that is when we fall back a week from today. turn our clocks back one hour back to standard time and then after that, we stay dry all the way into the first part of the

all right. and as we head to break here, we want to take a live look at the 10k which has just started. this was 6,000 additional runners in addition to the 22,000 running the full marathon. now 6,000 more runners out there right now. they have warm temperatures. >> that's right. and as adam mentioned, they stopped off. male finisher, the top 10k male winner was from arlington, locals have continued to dominate the 10k race. it started in 2006. so ten years running, 11 out of 20 winners have been from around here. they continue to make us proud.

to for one athlete, she will reach a milestone. brook curran will celebrate her hundredth mile today. she competed in iron man competitions and she raises money for charity. it all started when she locked eyes with a mother along a race route. >> you could see the weight of the world as she was pushing the stroller across the street and i must have be and our eyes locked and i know at that moment just like 9/11 that this was kind of my purpose for my marathons. >> she created an organization called running brook which gives grants to local charities dedicated to helping children. very cool. let's take another live look at the marine corps marathon race course. the 10k just got under way. the marathoners an hour and a

police are interviewing witnesses about a double homicide in capitol heights. >> shots were fired into a crowd on walker mill road this morning. derrick ward is live and joins us from the scene with more on the ongoing search for a suspect. >> reporter: good morning, again, you can see, here, we're in the 6800 block of walker mill road. a fire truck is leaving the scene. this gives us an idea of the complexity of the scene. seven hours after the shots reported, police are still holding this area of the parking lot. gunfire, possibly automatic weapons but lots of gunfire. that is what people who heard it described. when police got there, they found six people who had been hit. two people were killed. we don't have any information about the identity of the victims. only that they were teens. this happened at about 2:45 this morning in the 6800 block of walker mill road. no identity on the victims.

the suspect or suspects but police are indeed interviewing witnesses. i'm told that all of this happened at a party. >> unacceptable and it is horrifying, to have a life taken of a young man who is out here, it is just unspeakable. >> and again, police are asking from the public's help in determining what happened here and the questions have arisen one person shooting, an exchange of gunfire. all of those things are ironed out now. the scene is being held here. prince george's county. multiple people hit, two people dead. we're live, derrick ward, news4. thank you, it is also a busy morning for tens of thousands running in the marine corps marathon. we have a team of reporters sharing the inspirational stories as they race through all 26.2 miles.

they're first to come across the line and we're waiting for the 10kers, they're up next. joining us live in general robert b neller. what does this mean for your men and women and the marine corps, this big event today? >> more than what it just means for the marine corps. the capitol region. this is the iconic race for marathoners around the country, if not the world, so we're just proud to be able to host it and put it on and hope everybody has runners here and you know, there is no prize money. we're just out there running to compete. >> and that is what makes it the people's marathon. the biggest in the world. what does it mean, i guess, to be picked for this fun assignment. the thousands of marines working on this? >> well, you know, the marines you see out here, there are about 2,300 working the race. you know, they got orders to

voluntolders is a better world. they're happy to participate and be part of something. that is why most people join the military, they want to be something part of themselves and they're doing that here at the marine corps marathon. >> we could get into the low 80s. what does the heat mean for runners? >> talking to the race coordinator, i think for the real good runners, th w and the humidity is up there. they have plans in place and i think everybody is just going to have to be smart out there on the course. it will take the four to five hour finishers it will be a little harder at the end but we'll keep an eye on them and they'll be fine. >> one more thing before we go. we'll be up against the redskins. you're a kirk cousins fan. >> i'm a big kirk cousins fan.

army sergeant ryan long. he is one of the hand cyclists. this is a bittersweet marine corps for him as he started over the key bridge, his hand cycle broke down, leaving him disabled at the side of the road. a lot of folks came turnover try to help but determined they would not be able to repair or replace the gear that was broken. so he has been hang inning with us here at the runners. they've been coming along, as you can see in the video, giving him a lot of encouragement and showing their support for him. he was serving in afghanistan back in 2012 when what he injured and lost his leg at walter reed. somebody from the achilles group said i think you want to hand cycle. he told me this won't be his last marathon.

ntsb investigators say engine failure caused a plane to erupt in flames at o'hare international airport in chicago. take a look at this video here. my goodness, the dense, black smoke here. this happened on friday. investigators say pieces of the engine have been found up to 3,000 feet away. the american airlines plane had more than 160 passengers. 20 had to receive medical treatment. more now on what led to a strange scene at new york's famed metropolitan op area

thousands of runners making their way to the finish line of the 41st marathon, marine corps marathon. we want to take a live picture of the finish line right there. >> we're expectk the first male and female runners to cross at any moment here. news4's jim hanley has been down there anchoring our coverage from the finish line. anybody coming down the line yet? >> i'll tell you, no runners yet. we have more hand crankers the, as we've been saying all morning. we want to show you, they have divided up the finish line through the chu. you'll have the hand crankers, the 10ks and the marathon runners all if different lanes. we could have some congestion here and that is a concern for organizers today. this all stems from delays associated with safetrack so they've had to do different start times for the 10k versus the crankers versus the full marathoners. you know, everybody has so many

we talked to a man who was in an awful car accident and is walking the last 6.2 miles of this marathon with some amazing technology, hoping to inspire and encourage marines who may ever be in an accident in their future. >> i really do feel, without their service, i mean, i'm a paralyzed guy, man, walking steps in roades their service. >> and that robotic exoskeleton technology is available at the va and across the country. we're waiting for the first 10kers male and female to cross and we'll interview the full marathon winner coming up before 10:30. we're on schedule but i've shed a layer, as i said, it is getting warmer out here and we should expect some slower times according to organizers out

warm this morning. there is the cloud cover. live view from the tower camera and temperatures will quickly jump. in fact, as we look hour by hour, we'll be bell into the 70s by noon time and hovering around 80 degrees between 3:00 and 4:00 and briefly actually get into the low 80s, maybe for a few minutes between 3:00 and 4:00. that would then tie our record, maybe exceed it for the day which is 82 for the district set back in 1986. the w it will likely trigger showers, maybe a little thunder as of 6:00 p.m. the areas in thunder to the north and west. these are scattered showers. by 7:00, they come into the northern and western suburbs and into the district around 8:00 to 9:00 in the evening hours. it breaks up as it passes off to the south around 9 this evening and is done by 11:00 tonight. for the next several days, up and down we go. up this afternoon, down on

we'll have a partly sunny sky, a chill in the air, a little breezy in the morning but the winds will settle down and great weather for trick or treaters on monday morning in the 50s. chilly and dry and clouds around. and then as we get into tuesday, we start to crank back up a little bit, back into the mid-60s in the afternoon and partly sunny as we get into november here, a wednesday, into the mid-70s much the average high is in the low 60s. we'll be a good ten degrees, 12, 15 degrees above average by we may actually be back up to around 80 degrees on thursday afternoon. then another front comes in on thursday evening. it is going to bring that to an end. we'll have cooler weather coming to an end. we'll have the possibility of showers on thursday afternoon to thursday evening. after that, friday and into next weekend, another dry pattern setting up and cooler as well with highs just near 60 friday and saturday. a week from today, we turn our clocks back one hour as we go
