from where he was last seen. frantic rescues and incredible pictures from southern california. heavy rain and mudslides claimed even more lives. news 4 at 11:00 begins with breaking news. chaos in the district as a man is shot just steps from george washington university hospital. good evening, i'm jim handly. >> i'm doreen gentzler. it's near the foggy bottom metro station where a lot of people are constantly coming. >> that's where jackie bensen joins us live tonight. jackie, what have you learned? >> reporter: jim, sources tell us that the shooting is not believed to be random or the result of a robbery attempt. instead, investigators preliminarily believe it resulted from a dispute between the two men involved.

witnesses say the shooting happened right in front of the doors to the george washington university hospital entrance in the 900 block of 23rd street northwest. it was just after 8:30 p.m. the streets were filled with people walking from the gw foggy bottom metro station a few yards away. crime scene technicians documented the scene and placed evidence markers near numerous shell casings on the ground. police say bystanders, it's unclear whether they were hospital staff, helped the man get inside the facility. officials confirm that the hospital was briefly placed on lockdown. officers blocked off the lobby with crime scene tape. the dashboard camera on a passing metrobus may have captured images of the shooting. metro transit police officers held the bus in order to down load those images. the gunman was last seen running up 23rd street towards washington circle. live in northwest, jackie

the search for a missing father is over. prince george's county police tell us someone out for a walk tonight found daniel dehaven dead. he had dementia, you'll recall. he disappeared a week ago today and was last seen at the costco in beltsville. over the weekend, police told us dehaven may have been picked up along route 1 and dropped off in anne arundel county. he was found off dorsey road near bwi thor good marshall airport. the last day and a half have been stressful on frozen pipes and water mains in our area. it caused many to burst and break across our region. water seen flowing today down brantley boulevard in potomac. route 1 in college park even inside from a broken pipe of the historic dan by's tavern museum in alexandria. >> after the freeze comes the

are still missing. hundreds of first responders will be searching for them through the night. conditions are extremely difficult. >> looked like a world war i battlefield. a carpet of mud and debris everywhere with huge boulders, rocks, downed trees, power lines. >> new tonight, flooding on california highway 5. the powerful thomas wildfire beared down on the same stretch of road just a few weeks ago. you may recall that. a 30 mile long stretch of highway 101 in montecito is going to be closed down for another four to eight hours at least. doug mentioned on news 4 at 6:00 that that system hitting california is heading east. in fact, you're looking at new video tonight. these are water rescues in las vegas. forecasters in california say they expect another storm to move in next week. but for now, dry weather is on the horizon. i'm leon harris, back to you in the

thank you. breaking news from the caribbean. the u.s. geological survey says the 7.6 magnitude earthquake just struck north honduras. a tsunami advisory was issued not only for the coast of honduras but also as far away as puerto rico. the warning center september out an update that there's no threat to puerto rico or the u.s. virgin islands. the epicenter is not heavily populated. a silent protest in the works for president trump's first state of the union address. some democratic women in congress plan to wear all black to the speech in solidarity with the me too movement. we saw the same thing on display this past sunday at the golden globes in hollywood. the biggest stars protested sexual harassment in hollywood. the state of the union is set for january 30th, three weeks away. the me too movement

metro transit police. in silver springs, shomari stone, news 4. >> shomari, thank you. new concerns about safety in loudoun county to report as deputies search for a man who assaulted a young girl on a popular walking path. it happened wednesday afternoon on wright wood place here in sterling. the girl was walking home from her middle school when she was grabbed and touched inappropriate inappropriately. she screamed for help and got away. police say the biggest clue is home surveillance video captured from a nearby house. there's a sketch of the guy they're looking for. if you recognize him, you're urged to call police. the lines of more than a thousand workers at the discovery channel are about to change. the company announced it will move headquarters from downtown silver springs to new york. discovery made that decision after planning to merge with scripps late last year. it will impact 1300 jobs here. the headquarters will be sold with closure of the sale expected next year.

officers and canines posted at international screen bags in a large industrial space beneath the terminal. they also sift through passengers' bags at the arrival checkpoint looking for things like this. nine pounds of drugs concealed in bags labeled oatmeal powder. we also found a case in which drugs were found inside a greeting card and found drugs inside lollipops arriving in a bag at dulles. on this day, our cameras caught officers flagging a suspicious suitcase, pulling out everything from inside. even cutting open hard candies with a knife to see if anything illegal was hidden inside. supervisor chris downings, say they try to fool them. >> we're more creative in stopping them from being creative to bring it in. we're always one step ahmed. >> these two men were convicted of smuggling

they're grabbing the luggage that contain the drugs hidden inside food packages. most of the narcotics are originating from china. the justice department is trying something new, going after the makers of the drugs overseas. weeks ago, prosecutors filed criminal charges against the manufacturers of fentanyl. it's shipped to the u.s. and connected to deadly overdose. >> this is the fooirs time we identified by name chinese chemists. >> we're addicting an entire generation. >> she supports boosting the number of officers and stronger prosecution. >> we're not going to stop it from coming into this country. everything is tied to money. >> she said it's up to family to keep it out of the hands of users once the drugs are here. >> we have to talk to kids younger and younger and younger and work on prevention. >> as the area's drug

gaithersburg. culpepper at 24. nift melting that we saw today will refreeze. we could see slick sidewalks and roadways too. give yourself a little extra time. nothing like we saw this morning. but it could be bad in parts of the area. we have been dry here and really, we've been dry across much of the nation for this winter. we talked about how dry we were. we're back in a drought. i'm tracking this storm here. we've got a lot of stories on it because of the mudslides in parts of los angeles, towards las vegas some flooding in that region, too. this has been our pattern. this has kept all of the storms way to the south and the east. that's why st. mary's county has had more than frederick county, maryland. really quite amazing this pattern. the cold moves back, the jet stream moving in across the pacific picks up that storm system, moves it right into california and then brings it our way and brings us very warm air later

let's track it across the nation. look at the storm on thursday into the middle part of the country, chicago, st. louis. then for us, late thursday night into friday. we could be in for a good amount of rain. much-needed rainfall here friday into saturday. should be out of here by early saturday morning. but it also brings in very warm air. how warm? some of the temperatures tomorrow, cooler than today. 44 degrees. here we go into the warm air. 57 on your thursday. thursday is looking pretty nice. cloud cover and maybe rain around midnight or after midnight into early friday morning. then i think a break on friday. you may be able to get out and enjoy 62. but you'll need the umbrellas for sure. high of 54 on saturday. the cold air, that cold air, yeah. it's right back in here next week. a high of 30 degrees on your monday and a chance for some snow. very light right now. but it looks like chances of snow middle of next week. >> when are we supposed
