classmates.. students from other schools.. and the entire community rallied around kendall-- raising money to help with medical bills. the goal was to have 60 students donate.. and already 102 have signed up. her brother connor, says his family appreciates the help and is grateful for the continued support. kendall had several blood transfusions and she was always just so thankful that people were willing to donate their blood to help her and to help save people's lives bump to: sot this is a great way for students to give back, an honor drive for kendall and hannah because both students had to have a lot of blood products. so this raises awareness for cancer patients and why it's so important to donate blood. as i mentioned.. this drive is only for cave spring high school students-- but another public blood drive in their honor is in the works for mid-may. a non-profit in honor of kendall.. called "living a kendall life".. is hosting a 5-k in her honor in may. we've got more information on

will support on our website, wsls-dot-com. eb, wsls 10. a new study from the centers for disease control finds a third of amiercans face health risks from a lack of sleep. the study shows that people in some states and regions fare better than others. 36% of people in virginia aren't getting enough rest. that's better than hawaiians who get the least, but worse than south dakota, the most rested state in the nation. sleep experts recommend adults sleep at least 7 hours a night. anthing less than that has been linked to health problems like diabetes, obesity and heart disease.### exercise and getting the right amount of sleep can help prevent a stroke. the study of more than 2- hundred - thousand adults showed those who logged seven to eight hours of shut-eye a night -- had a 25-percent reduced risk of stroke. average sleepers reduced their risk even further ... if they exercised three to six times a week.. #

researchers continue their efforts to help people in flint, michigan get safe drinking water. students and staff known as the flint water team are assembling 300 additional water testing kits. those will be used next week to re-test the same 271 homes team members tested in august. last month a virginia tech team tested water samples after people complained about poor quality. they found lead levels that were 13-hundred times the legal amount. community members are now calling for the prosecution and resignation of michigan governor rick snyder. they say he committed a criminal act by intentionally poisoning the city's water supply. you've got to figure out how to get clean water to the people of the city of flint and we've also got to make sure that there is a real political accountability michigan's government will also pay 30 million dollars to flint residents to help them pay their water bills.###

suspected of causing a devastating birth defect.### today students at cave spring the community.. remembering their classmates. there's a blood drive for students and faculty to honor kendall bayne and hannah bryant.. two former students who lost their battles to cancer in recent months. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier joins us live. this is something that's gotten a big reaction from students.### when the blood drive was first announced... the parent-teacher- student- organization had a goal of getting sixty students to sign up-- as of this morning more than one- hundred students are scheduled to donate blood today. leah kinder, the president of the p-t-s-o says the idea for a blood drive came to her shortly after kendall bayne's memorial service. kendall passed away in october.. after fighting a rare form of cancer for nearly five years. her fellow classmates.. students from other schools and the entire community rallied around kendall during

help with medical bills. and that fighting spirit continues this morning.. as the students at her high school will donate blood to help other people in similar situations. its very important to cancer patients to donate blood. most people think when they're donating their blood is going to go to a car accident or gunshot victim. cancer patients are one of the number one recipients of blood products. bump to: sot it was unanimous, timing wasn't right to do it until after the first of the year and then we lost another student, hannah, so we decided that right now is probably the best time to do it. hannah bryynt.. a 20-15 graduate of cave spring high school, passed away earlier this year after her battle with cancer. bryant was enrolled as a freshman at j-m-u when she passed away in january. today's blood drive is for students and faculty only... another blood drive, open to the entire community in their honor-- is being planned for may. coming up in our next half hour-- i'll have more on what this event means to the bayne family.. and we talk to kendall's brother.

a 3-year-old in suffolk is an accidental shooting. police say the child will be o-k... he shot himself in the handgun. the boys mother and a 2-year-old were home when it happened. police are continuing to investigate the incident, and say charges are pending against the mother. officer say the hope this for all parent's who own guns.. to think about safety first. police are investigating after gunshots were heard overnight in roanoke. it happened in the 4700 block of delray street just before midnight. officers say they did find one house that had been hit with bullets...but no one was hurt.
