defense attorneys started calling witnesses for the first time thursday. testimony centered around alleged gang ring-leader halisi uhuru. 4 suspects are charged in connection with quick's death, however the alleged gang leader and another suspect are not charged in the murder ... but are accused of being part of a racketeering conspiracy. the leader claims he had no idea about the murder. quick was reported missing in february of 2014. his body was found a week later in goochland county.### a sixteen-year- old boy is in critical condition... after a helicopter crashed in the waters of pearl harbor, hawaii. it was a scary scene for tourists near the u-s-s arizona memorial. nocg""when we first saw it i actually turned and said, do those land on water, cause it looka likw its coming ..and within a second someone yelled get down and we just ran and tried to take cover." good samaritans jumped in the water to rescue the five people on board. no word yet on what caused thursday's crash landing. the

owned by genesis aviation-- a company that gives helicopter tours of oahu. the federal aviation administration is investigating. # a dog is safe and warm this morning after falling into the cold water of lake thoreau. the 75 pound dog, angel, fell through the thin ice. when faixfax county rescuers arrived, they found the dog struggling. so, fire crews put on their ice suits and went in after angel who was barking and crying. within ten minutes, rescuers reached the dog and pulled her back to safety. a vet examined the dog and said she was cold, but not hurt.### new this morning... chances are your bottles of sunscreen have been packed away for the winter -- hidden among the beach towels and swim goggles. dermatologists say sunscreen is vitally important -- even during the cloudy, cold days of winter. sot: alyson lowe - medical esthetician - :12 - :20 "it is a common misconception that you don't get as much sun exposure in the winter than in the summer, but that's really not true." experts say the sun's u-v-b rays are less intense... but

classmates. there's a blood drive for students and faculty to honor kendall bayne and hannah bryant.. two former students who lost their battles to cancer in recent months. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier joins us live. this is something that's gotten a big reaction from students.### when the blood drive was first announced... the parent-teacher- student- organization had a goal of getting sixty students to sign up-- as of this morning more than one- hundred students are scheduled to donate blood today. leah kinder, the president of the p-t-s-o says the idea for a blood drive came to her shortly after kendall bayne's memorial service. kendall passed away in october.. after fighting a rare form of cancer for nearly five years. her fellow classmates.. students from other schools and the entire community rallied around kendall during her treatments.. raising money to help with medical bills. and that fighting spirit continues this morning.. as the students at her high school will donate blood to help other people in similar situations. its very important to cancer

blood. most people think when they're donating their blood is going to go to a car accident or gunshot victim. cancer patients are one of the number one recipients of blood products. bump to: sot it was unanimous, timing wasn't right to do it until after the first of the year and then we lost another student, hannah, so we decided that right now is probably the best time to do it. hannah bryant.. a 20-15 graduate of cave spring high school, passed away earlier this year after her battle with cancer. bryant was enrolled as a passed away in january. today's blood drive is for students and faculty only... another blood drive, open to the entire community in their honor-- is being planned for may. coming up in our next half hour-- event means to the bayne family.. and we talk to kendall's brother. eb, wsls 10. in what's news today... a third community walk is tonight in danville.

the community together... to bring an end to violence in the city. tonight's walk takes place at danville regional medical center at 6. next friday's walk is scheduled at averett university. in march... the hospital and danville police will partner for a series of safety and crime prevention programs. # governors from across the country attend the annual national governors association winter meeting starting today. it gives state leaders the chance to talk about issues facing states and the country... as well as look at solutions across the country. virginia governor terry mcauliffe is vice chair of the association. # virginia tech hosts the uplifting black men conference today. the event looks to find ways to support and enhance the experiences of black men in higher education. guest speakers and panel discussions will talk about individual journeys through higher education, diversity issues and leadership. the lynchburg humane society holds a food truck bow wow event today. from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., several food trucks will

no more overhead bins. airbus has filed a patent for an under-seat storage compartment. instead of overhead bins, airline passengers would store carry-ons under their seat. while the design would end the passenger fight for overhead bin storage, it would force passengers to leave their seat each time they wanted to access or put away personal items like laptops, purses and backpacks. airbus' current patent would also further restrict already limited leg room. the company says along with airplanes, the storage units could be used on trains or buses.### turning back to the forecast... storm team ten meteorologist kristina montuori has more --

the superintendent excused all absences for the day. a school spokesperson says ... the district handles every incident on a case by case basis... and their first concern is the safety of it's students. a community meeting is monday night inside the high school cafeteria to discuss recent events. # nearly two dozen students were sent to the hospital after a 3-vehicle accident involving two school buses in dinwiddie county. according to state police the accident happened just before 3 thursday afternoon. troopers say a county school bus stopped in response to a pick-up truck hitting its brakes ... when another bus hit it from behind. the impact then pushed the first bus into the pick-up truck. the driver of the second bus was charged with following to closely.### one person is dead after a crash in pittsylvania county. state police say it happened wednesday afternoon... on route 6-40. according to state police ... 74- year-old homer wolfe ran off the side of the road ... over- corrected ... and hit a tree. troopers say he was not wearing a seatbelt and died at the

sides involved in a federal defamation lawsuit over a retracted rolling stone magazine article want to delay the trial. a joint motion was filed in federal court in charlottesville asking for the two-week trial to start october 11. it was originally scheduled for july. university of virginia associate dean nicole eramo is suing rolling stone, its publisher and the author of an article depicting a rape culture at the university of virginia. ### maryland's highest court delays the trial of a baltimore police officer... charged in the death of freddie gray. the state's court of appeals ruled it would take up the issue of whether william porter ... who's trial ended in a mistrial ... could be forced to testify against the other officers while waiting his second trial. the order stalls the trial for officer edward nero... his trial was scheduled to begin with jury selection monday. the court will hear arguments starting march 3-rd. # virginia lawmakers are considering whether to keep the names of police officers

the bill exempts the names and training records of law enforcement from freedom of information act requests. supporters say the information puts officers in danger during a time of growing contempt toward law enforcement. those critical of the bill say names are an important tool in watching whether police departments are hiring problem officers with taxpayer money.### in a wsls 10 exclusive... virginia state police have a new tool that allows them to gather and store data from a crime scene in minutes. state police in the salem division used the leica p-40 laser scanner for the first time two weeks ago... in the jefferson national forest... where they believe nicole lovell was murdered. when police et the data loaded into the computer, it provides a 3-d image of a crime scene ... so police who have never been there can review the evidence as it existed the day it was discovered. kevin zirkle, vsp special agent: 22:47:11 "the data is never going to change and it's always available, so 10, 15 years from now we could pull that data back

crime scene exactly the way it was." the scanners each cost 2- hundred thousand dollars. there are now seven scanners throughout the commonwealth... one for every state police division.# after losing two of their own classmates to cancer over the past several months.. students at cave spring high school are giving back in their honor. a blood drive for students and faculty is today.. honoring kendall bayne and hannah bryant. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier joins us live with more on the event-- erin tell us more about the plans for today.### the blood drive is just a few hours away.. and it's an event that has gotten a big reaction from students over the past week. today's drive is only for cave spring students and staff-- as a way for them to remember their classmates.. and heal. it comes just a few weeks after 20--15 graduate, hannah bryant, lost her battle with cancer back in january. students are also donating in honor of kendall bayne.. who passed away in october after fighting a rare form of cancer for nearly five years. as she went through

classmates.. students from other schools.. and the entire community rallied around kendall-- raising money to help with medical bills. the goal was to have 60 students donate.. and already 102 have signed up. her brother connor, says his family appreciates the help and is grateful for the continued support. kendall had several blood transfusions and she was always just so thankful that people were willing to donate their blood to help her and to help save people's lives bump to: sot this is a great way for students to give back, an honor drive for kendall and hannah because both students had to have a lot of blood products. so this raises awareness for cancer patients and why it's so important to donate blood. as i mentioned.. this drive is only for cave spring high school students-- but another public blood drive in their honor is in the works for mid-may. a non-profit in honor of kendall.. called "living a kendall life".. is hosting a 5-k in her honor in may. we've got more information on

will support on our website, wsls-dot-com. eb, wsls 10. a new study from the centers for disease control finds a third of amiercans face health risks from a lack of sleep. the study shows that people in some states and regions fare better than others. 36% of people in virginia aren't getting enough rest. that's better than hawaiians who get the least, but worse than south dakota, the most rested state in the nation. sleep experts recommend adults sleep at least 7 hours a night. anthing less than that has been linked to health problems like diabetes, obesity and heart disease.### exercise and getting the right amount of sleep can help prevent a stroke. the study of more than 2- hundred - thousand adults showed those who logged seven to eight hours of shut-eye a night -- had a 25-percent reduced risk of stroke. average sleepers reduced their risk even further ... if they exercised three to six times a week.. #

researchers continue their efforts to help people in flint, michigan get safe drinking water. students and staff known as the flint water team are assembling 300 additional water testing kits. those will be used next week to re-test the same 271 homes team members tested in august. last month a virginia tech team tested water samples after people complained about poor quality. they found lead levels that were 13-hundred times the legal amount. community members are now calling for the prosecution and resignation of michigan governor rick snyder. they say he committed a criminal act by intentionally poisoning the city's water supply. you've got to figure out how to get clean water to the people of the city of flint and we've also got to make sure that there is a real political accountability michigan's government will also pay 30 million dollars to flint residents to help them pay their water bills.###

new this morning... liberty university president and trump supporter jerry falwell junior is responding to the comments about trump's faith. falwell endorsed trump for president last month, but he says its for more than religion. jerry falwell jr.- president of liberty university: "i do believe that trump is a christian, but that's not why i endorsed him. i endorsed him because believe he'll be the best president of the united states." falwell says he also based his choice on who would lead the country away from debt... and restore economic reliability.# the body of justice antonin scalia will lie in repose today in the supreme court's great hall, giving the public a chance to pay their respects. this as the debate over who replaces him continues. some argue the president has the power to decide while others say the senate should make the decision. political expert doctor ed lynch says in short, the legislative and executive branch have to agree on someone, but slows the process. because, lynch says -- both branches are looking for what they want.

suspected of causing a devastating birth defect.### today students at cave spring the community.. remembering their classmates. there's a blood drive for students and faculty to honor kendall bayne and hannah bryant.. two former students who lost their battles to cancer in recent months. w-s-l-s 10's erin brookshier joins us live. this is something that's gotten a big reaction from students.### when the blood drive was first announced... the parent-teacher- student- organization had a goal of getting sixty students to sign up-- as of this morning more than one- hundred students are scheduled to donate blood today. leah kinder, the president of the p-t-s-o says the idea for a blood drive came to her shortly after kendall bayne's memorial service. kendall passed away in october.. after fighting a rare form of cancer for nearly five years. her fellow classmates.. students from other schools and the entire community rallied around kendall during

help with medical bills. and that fighting spirit continues this morning.. as the students at her high school will donate blood to help other people in similar situations. its very important to cancer patients to donate blood. most people think when they're donating their blood is going to go to a car accident or gunshot victim. cancer patients are one of the number one recipients of blood products. bump to: sot it was unanimous, timing wasn't right to do it until after the first of the year and then we lost another student, hannah, so we decided that right now is probably the best time to do it. hannah bryynt.. a 20-15 graduate of cave spring high school, passed away earlier this year after her battle with cancer. bryant was enrolled as a freshman at j-m-u when she passed away in january. today's blood drive is for students and faculty only... another blood drive, open to the entire community in their honor-- is being planned for may. coming up in our next half hour-- i'll have more on what this event means to the bayne family.. and we talk to kendall's brother.

a 3-year-old in suffolk is an accidental shooting. police say the child will be o-k... he shot himself in the handgun. the boys mother and a 2-year-old were home when it happened. police are continuing to investigate the incident, and say charges are pending against the mother. officer say the hope this for all parent's who own guns.. to think about safety first. police are investigating after gunshots were heard overnight in roanoke. it happened in the 4700 block of delray street just before midnight. officers say they did find one house that had been hit with bullets...but no one was hurt.

need to know" before you head out the door this morning. police are looking for answers after shots were fired overnight in roanoke. it happened shortly after midnight along the 27-hundred block of delray street. police say no one got hurt and there are no suspects. officers did find a home that had been hit with bullets. administrators at hargrave military academy in chatham are taking extra precaution and closing the school today due to a potential threat by isis on social media. the school says the threat was received tuesday through a direct message to one of its social media sites. the school will also allow cadets to willingly leave campus this weekend.### students at cave spring high school are giving back to the community, as they remember two classmates they lost to cancer over the past several months. the drive is in honor of kendall bayne and hannah bryant. the original goal was to have 60 students donate, but the school has far surpassed that-- with 102 already signed up to donate today.
