it actually suggests little, if anything, falling from the sky in the charlotte area. that's fine by most of us. up in the high country, latest future cast projections are about an inch to maybe 2 of snow in the mountains. between, say, tomorrow morning and tomorrow night. and that could impact travel on the high country. and once again, cold and low wind chill values. not just in the high country. but in the charlotte area. i'll show you what to expect for valentine's weekend and that storm next week. >> thank you, steve. we go to breaking news now, as drivers using independence boulevard, a major commuter road, in and out of charlotte, have had to dodge those orange cones out there. and the road crews all day long. this is a story we first brought you as breaking news this morning. on daybreak. it has now been more than 12 hours since water started seeping onto that road and freezing. and the repairs are still under way right now. >> in the last hour, we learned drivers will face delays out there for the commute tomorrow morning. when everybody is heading in that direction. eyewitness news reporter, gina

closer look at the struggles to get the lanes open. >> reporter: scott, likely until about 4:00 tomorrow afternoon is what we were cold, just before 5:00 newscast. ncot had hoped to have this area cleared about two hours ago. but its patchwork on this slick spot behind me didn't work. so now cones are blocking it off. and it's going to be up to charlotte water to fix it, which has been busy, fixing leaks all over the county today. >> reporter: it started with a series of wrecks over the weekend. and then there was this accordion of cars, smashed together like a sandwich this morning. that put antoine bonds behind. >> i mean, literally not moving inches for 30 and 40 minutes, caused me to be late for work. >> reporter: before ncdot took action on the slick spots, some drivers couldn't avade. >> -- avoid. >> just inconvenient. >> reporter: crews found a water line had burst and was seeping onto the road.

but that was only a temporary fix. >> the water is continuing to seep in. so the work that we did is not correcting the problem. >> reporter: it's now up to charlotte water to fix it. and repairs may not be finished until sometime tomorrow. utility officials aren't able to say what the cause is because there are several possibilities, including cold weather and aging lines and pipes. that's why can be no surprise to getting reports of water main breaks. like this one on tuck segee road. these problems tend to pop up during cold snaps. and they take time to fix. so for now, drivers should be aware if they see water on roads. >> roads are going to be very cold. it could cause a very big issue for travelers. >> and as we mentioned, this road may not get any work on it until tomorrow. we noticed that crews packed it up about two hours ago. assuming that they'll be back out tomorrow to fix this in time for the afternoon commute. but as far as your commute in

north trion has been the place charlotte's homeless have gone for help and housing for more than 20 years now. but with the light rail coming soon, businesses say the men's shelter and urban ministries are holding back development here. >> it's a burden on us. it's a burden on the businesses. burden on the community. >> reporter: mark middlesworth was a hand -- one of a handful. he sat down to confront what is a touchy subject. moving homeless services off north trion. >> men's shelter itself. it is not going to move out and leave the rest of the community that -- >> will austin, a member of the shelter's board told the group, they're planning to renovate the facility and have no plans to leave right now. hindrance to growth. >> you can see it's directly on a bus line. >> a wooded lot on freedom drive, near i-85, that could homeless. right next to the county services building.

responded to our questions about a growing discrimination lawsuit. but they aren't saying much. a total of four families have sued calvary church, claiming their children were dismissed from the organization's school, for having disabilities and medical issues. calvary's attorney says the church hasn't had time to read the amended lawsuit. so it can't comment on it. the attorney did say the church does not agree with the original claims and plans to vigorously defend itself. today, waxhaw police are in a case with a roofer. they believe michael keener took customers' money but never did any work. they say he used the nake fame of john greer and gave a fake -- fake name of john greer and gave a fake address. >> i expect we'll find more. and i think there's probably more victims around here. we just don't know about it yet. >> police are asking customers

7:00, upper 30s by 9:00. but we will cool off. still cold. skies will be cloudy. and again, those clouds act as a blanket. not allowing temperatures to fall quite as far as the past couple of mornings. here's tomorrow's future cast. snow showers and mountains through lunchtime. as we pointed out a little while ago, latest future cast is charlotte area sees little if anything falling from the sky. i'm not going to rule out a couple of snowflakes or rain drops around lunchtime. that would be the time line. but i gotta be honest with you, these systems tend to come through, relatively moisture- starved. it's more about the cold air behind it. here's a look at future cast wind speeds. and notice they're pretty quiet through about lunchtime tomorrow. and then they'll start to pick up a little in the afternoon, especially in the high country, as that cold air comes pouring back in. so our tracker tomorrow. a little flurry or perhaps a couple of sprinkles around lunchtime tomorrow. winds relatively light in the charlotte area. in the high country, a little bit of a different story. check out our future cast wind chill value.

starting to drop as we head through the afternoon, back into the teens. and by this time tomorrow night, feel like 12 at beach mountain. 10 at banner elk and 12 at boon. and that sets the stage for our very cold weekend. neighborhood forecast in hickory tomorrow. cloudy skies. couple of flurries possible. late morning, lunchtime will be in the upper 30s. neighborhood forecast rock hill, if anything falls from the sky, probably a rain drop as temperatures climb to the very low 40s. friday night and saturday, cold air really takes hold. and this will be the heart of the cold air. so with your weekend always in view, we've got upper 30s on saturday. valentine's day, you talk about a cold start. temperature of 13. the all-time record in case you're wondering, happens to be the coldest we've ever been in charlotte. 5 below. but it is about 20 degrees colder than average. and for valentine's day itself, temperatures will rise to go the lower 30s. and upper 20s as we work our way through the early evening. that sets the stage.

here in the weather center. and things have changed a bit here in the last day or so. >> we have been tracking that storm we have been talking about monday and tuesday. now, it's trending further to the north. warmer temperatures would be more rain instead of snow. and that's exactly what it looks like here as we track this through monday and tuesday. looking more like a wintry mix monday and tuesday. bigger rain system tuesday. and to put in comparison, steve. is this is what we are looking at later this week. check this out. that's when we thought we were going to have more of a snow event. something to watch. but good news at least. >> look at about a half dozen models. and the trend has been our friend. it's getting warmer and warmer with each run. and a couple of days ago, this future cast was showing a few inches of snow in the charlotte area. it's now under an inch. that's good news. check out our five-day forecast. that's very cold, as we work our way through valentine's weekend. that system arrives monday. if we do see that wintry mix it will be on monday.
