things that come up in our own office which leads us to today's topic. our executive producer kim, who is responsible for scheduling for us, for example, on the rare chance that we're sick or something we text her, we call her and she finds a fill in. how many times have we been sick for me ten years for you, -- >> six, seven years. i don't know twice. >> you have been sick? >> a couple of my first years i had like perfect attendance i was like do iet gold star? >> the thing that is frustrating for her, now a days nobody calls the home phone, but nobody tends to make phone calls after 9:00 or 10:00. kids are pretty respectful. >> to your kids get phone calls? >> not really. they are like no i'm not on the phone i'm face timing. i'm like that's being on the phone you see the person. her complaint is about late night texts.
9:02 am
in the morning, but if your phone is your alarm clock it will wake you up. >> everybody knows the truth is if you turn your sound off your alarm still goes off. so the problem is, oftentimes we forget to do that. >> it does? >> yes. so you can turn your sound off and you don't hear your texts, but you're still going to wake up from your alarm clock. sometimes she forgets to turn it off or put it on do not disturb therefore she gets disturbed. >> and she uses aire is that a good idea. >> no. kim she does not use airplane mode. you turn your entire communication off. that's a bad idea. >> just put it on the moon the do not kiss tush. -- disturb. then people who are necessary can still get through to you or if people call multiple times it rings. >> i love that trend someone that is necessary. >> necessary. >> you want to be necessary on
9:03 am
what food or what would you drink that you think that you feel your breath smells really bad. >> well coffee. i often apologize to guests because i drink so much coffee in the morning, but they all have too. it cancels each other out. >> coffee is probably a good one. the focus of this is on garlic. what you can do to cure garlic breath. >> i needed this the other day i had garlic hummus and then i was working. and don't you feel like the person always the person that wants to talk closely or tell you secrets. >> th[laugh close talkers. evtscientists sayhewing mint is one of the most natural dee odes risers for garlic breath. the next best, raw apples or raw lettuce because apparently raw foods breakdown garlic volatile compounds with odor eliminating enzymes and these compounds that actually destroy the smell.
9:04 am
>> pick up mint, apples or lettuce, there's our tip for you today. don't text people late at night. they might have their sound on still. before we show you some of the latest fashions for fall we're going to take a look at our art's cameras plus picture of the day. >> patty sent us this photo that she got from her youngest daughter becky. she captured this surrounding by loving little kisses from her three children. >> isn't that a cool shot? >> also her oth just delivered her first baby boy theodore yesterday. patty is so excited to have another grandson. >> that's an awesome photograph. i love that. if you have a great kiss captured in time make it our picture of the day. email it to us at pictures@themorningblend.com. don't forget to include a story to go along with the photo. all right. first up today, models on our runway. they are featuring clothes, jewelry and gifts from a store you have never seen before on

9:16 am
the pumpkin enzymes mixed with the acids in the pumpkin facial help breakdown the dry dead skin that starts to build in winter. it's a fabulous facial to have. >> it's a free service you do? >> it is. we have five different facials we offer. who doesn't like pumpkin in the fall. this is our featured facial. >> i have read a lot about pumpkin too in face masks it's just so good for you. it really is. like you said this time of year with the season change. i have noticed blotchiness and a little bit of acne different things like that. is that common for women? >> it is it's very common in the change of the seasons. and also, you know with age too. is the cell turnover starts to slow down as we get older. using something like that pumpkin facial will help breakdown all of that dry dead skin, and it reveals the brighter more luminous complexion and who doesn't want
9:17 am
you have all of those good vitamins and enzymes like you mentioned. the pumpkin express facial is something you do for free right now right? >> it is. >> what is that service like? >> you come in, we discuss your skincare concerns, and you know have you wash your face and you can choose really any of the facials are available year-round. i like the pumpkin because it smells like pumpkin pie. it doesn't taste like it though. i found that out. 9:18 am
for skincare is going to be the right fit for your skin in the colder dryer season. >> one of the things you talk about and you talk about frequently is the exfoliation part of it. a lot of times in the winter your skin is dry and you don't want to do something harsh to it it is by exfoliating and releasing that dead skin you get to the brighter, healthier more moisturized layer of your skin. >> when i spend time with my grandson which i love doing i can't stop touching him hisn is so soft. it's fresh and young and dewey. as get older like you said that kind of slows down by using something like that it will reveal that fresh dewey glowy skin. so yes you do need to exfoliate. >> one thing i think is nice is updating different color for the season. it's always tough when you see all of the colors especially right now there are a lot of darker colors to know how to use them. that's one thing i love that you do here's how you update your
9:19 am
drastically. >> i bet you hear that a lot when people come in they want something new, but don't want a huge change. >> i have all the time people come in and say i'm ready for a new lipstick what is new. it is fun to kind of just change a little bit or maybe they are looking for a new eye look or something, and, i love that part. just sitting down and talking with someone and trying to find what is going to be best for you. >> uh-huh. >> people can come in and talk about the free express facial. it's bas all of the different studios it's about 25 minutes. they can do either the pumpkin express facial or choose a different flavor again. [laughter] >> yeah pretty much. pretty much. >> there are other fun ones people can ask about. >> there is apple and cinnamon. the cocoa and vanilla. the lavender ginseng and the camomile. delicious. >> they all sound good. >> don't eat them. [laughter] >> yeah and um, another thing
9:20 am
moisturized now that there is a changing of the season. they did that consultation as part of your express facial. >> do you usually recommend people change their moisturizer to something thicker? it it depends on your s skin ty. generally you will go something a little richer. >> exfoliating first is going to help your moisturizer work better too. >> that's awesome. >> that's great. >> here's where you can f location near you, there are locations in brookfield square, hales corner, and oconomowoc, near the corner of highway 16 and also a shop in west bend. visit your merle norman online at merle norman.com. thanks ladies. >> thank you. >> good seeing you guys happy pumpkin season. still ahead everybody the apps that all parents need to know about to protect their kids

9:31 am
9:34 am
i always joke that i need to be hip to keep up with my kids, but the fact of the matter is, that if your child has a phone, there are certain apps you have to know about. not just to be cool because i always joke about that, but to really keep them safe. >> very true. dr. melissa westendorf is the cofounder of the technology wellness center. she's here with information that is very important for parents to know about. good to have you here. >> thanks. >> i think this is great i think parents try to keep up, but it's really difficult to do that. there is a lot of different things in that kids are doing using, that the kids spread that the parents don't hear about because they keep things secret right? >> it is hard for us to keep up. i always liken it to you don't want to give your kids a phone if you don't want them to get into dangerous areas, we don't give them keys to the car to go driving without teaching them how to do it. we're at such a disadvantage because we don't know about these things so we have to do all of this research to find out what is out there and what they are using.
9:35 am
kids in a techo age where our kids as they grow up and have children they are so much more sophisticated about technology, but we're that clueless generation where we didn't have it as kids, but we're raising kids that are very tech savey and very quick on the phones. they are always moving around. once you figure out facebook, you got to know on instagram, snap chat it goes on and on. let's talk about first the categories you are talking about. we're going to list some dangerous a categories right? >> i kind of clump them into different categories so you have, there is such things as self-destructing apps that would be your snap chat, et cetera where they send it and it disappears in a certain amount of time. you know that can be problematic just because i think the sender, i think those apps are more difficult for the sender i think it disappears and people can take a screen shot of it so you have a lot of pornography, you have a lot of bullying that goes
9:36 am
that's, it doesn't go away it can be permanent. those are the difficulties with the self-destructing. >> the other ones are burn notes, snap chat. >> disappears apps. >> the disappears apps. those are to me it's if your child has these they are hiding something. it doesn't need to be horribly bad, but they are hiding something. it's an app like bulty is one. can you store things within the unless they put in the password. with vaulty if you put in the wrong password it takes a picture of the person trying to get into your app. >> no way. >> kids will know if the parent is onto them. >> that's crazy. >> that is crazy. what you need to look for on your phone or on phone are there two calculators, are there two things that are similar and why would they have that? >> this is really scary to me
9:37 am
app. we did the dis appearing app. >> what was audio manager? >> it takes care of audio files filesit's the same concept. >> the next one is the texting app. >> you have kick and yikyak. a lot of people have them, but you get a lot of bullying, a of felacios material. it's anonymous. not authenticated with the user. it's about your location with yikyak. you can send something to yakers is what they call them up to 500 so bomb threats have been called into schools because it goes to 500 kids that have this. it's a lot of inappropriate material and bullying that takes place on kick. >> the next one is blogging and
9:38 am
me. instagram, tumbler and musically. >> right. a lot of people have them. you can have awesome things that are on them. a lost younger kids are using musically to like they sing over songs et cetera. >> yeah. >> right. right, but here's the problem is really really easy to get to inappropriate content. if your child, especially a young child has that they can easily go to inappropriate content. things like you can find like how to be an anorexic, how a bulimic. there can be really things on those apps that you know you don't know if you want your kid exposed to. that's more about education. >> it can look really sweet as they are lip syncing to a cute pop video. >> we already mentioned the self-destructing apps those are the ones you post something and you are under the impression with burn note, snap chat, whisper that is going to go away. the problem is there is almost always a way to make it
9:39 am
now there are revenge porn sites from snap chat. it's called snap porn. people break up with their boyfriend and girlfriend and they go revenge oriented. again, you know we really educate, educate, educate. >> the last one chatting and meetup apps these really scare parents. tinder, blender and ask fm. >> the first three kids shouldn't be on them under 18 they should not be on them, but they can be. you are partnering up with a stranger like it's purposely a stranger and you can either video chat, or you can text. and you can filter for interests, but it's a sex app. basically that's what it is. if your child has that or your older adolescent has it they shouldn't. the ask fm that's basically a kid's app. >> a lot of bullying.
9:40 am
document cases based on the bullying taken place on those apps. >> do you list all of this on your website? >> correct. >> the way people can find out more about these apps and more is the technology wellness center.com. that's where you can learn more and catch up so you can be a little more in tune with what is going on with the kids these days. >> that went so fast. >> people can review this segment at themorningblend.com such great information. thank you so much doctor. in your family allergic to pets? what to do about it and have suggestions for other safer
9:43 am
welcome back. the october issue of metroparent magazine has great features, testing do about it and allergy friendly suggestions for other types of pets and great fall farm activities in southeastern wisconsin from pumpkin and apple picks to hay rides and corn mazes. that all sounds so fun. today the editor is here with a guide to this month's feature. >> please we can amy schwabe a wife, mother of two and everyone in her family, but her, has allergies. [laughter] >> good to have you here. >> thanks.
9:44 am
a lot of people especially if they have a pet or want to get a pet. the reason you thought about this is because it affects your family. >> actually my sister she is pretty much anaphylactic to dogs and cats. growing up we knew if anybody has animal you can't go by them. everybody was always telling her we have a hypeo allergenic pet. i talked to a allergist and such thing. >> it's the dander it has nothing to do with the hair correct? >> if it does have hair or fur it's more likely the dander will get in the air. so the suggestions are, if you do have a pet kind of just like, something that can be contained is better because then the dander won't get in the air as much. so smaller animals like hamsters, guinea pigs something like that. >> rabbits? >> possibly. they say, basically you can be
9:45 am
to test it out. >> yeah. and that too is your suggestion about smaller animals that maybe can be contained could be good options for people depending on the severity of the allergies probably? >> right. the allergist i talked to it did say that some people are okay with just living with it if they have minor symptoms, but somebody who would have asthma or more chronic conditions like sinus infections should probably just steer clear of whatever they are don't necessarily help and a lot of people don't want to have to do that too. what about the fact that pets really teach compassion for children and a lot of parents and families want to have a companion in their family as a member. so what can you do? reptiles encourage them to get out and play with bugs? >> that's what i do. my nephew, who his mom is my sister who has allergies they have a gecko. there is a cool factor there
9:46 am
cool. my kids, i'm always like get out there, get lightning bugs, we have like we always have in the summer we have caterpillars and watch them turn into butterflies stuff like that. >> that's fun. >> it's still a living thing and kids feel a responsibility to care for it. i still think it's wonderful. even if it's a small animal or gecko something like that. let's transition to the great fall ons wagon rides, pumpkin and apple picking. >> one of the great things about southeast wisconsin it is really, there is stuff everywhere. and it's really kind of customizable to your family. flu-like you're really into lots of activities and crowds things like that go to elegant farmer or, you know one of the bigger places. but then there is also a lot of just like family owned farms just you know down the street where if you just want a laid back apple picks or pumpkin picking can you go there too.
9:47 am
of year to get out and do that. i went pumpkin picking the other weekend and it was just, there was really cool setups and things to see and activities for the kids and hay rides it kind of brings you back to your childhood. i think it connects you with you know this time of year the fall and harvest. >> right. >> and that shot we had there, i have a picture of it too. this is your fall farm guide. if people go to your website, they can find all of the to do wagon rides, floral markets, petting farms, pumpkin farms, a little bit of everything and you can kind of figure out when their hours are what it costs and what you can do there. >> there is also in our calendar i couldn't fit everything in the print edition of all of the just fall events going on. so there is a longer guide to that online too. >> wonderful.
9:48 am
9:51 am
affects their daily lives. most of us know sleep is good for our overall well-being, but we don't get enough of though z's. we have a doctor to tell us how to get more shut eye. >> thanks for having me on the show. >> it's great to have you back. people have seen us on set before. it's nice to chat with you again. talk about sleep. i know you're a specialist. you're one of few in the country talk about these sought after sleep techniques or things we can learn, but how to get a better night sleep. >> well, it's pretty amazing, right now i'm in san francisco at the health 2.0 conference. all of these booths you see behind me are companies that have new inva invasion -- innovs in sleep and sleep technology. it's surprising some of the things people have come up with that have the ability to help you sleep not only to monitor
9:52 am
