whats the story being told as part of this? >> there is a whole chu of laura's life sheoesn't cover in the book. i don't remember which books it is between. but comes between two of the stories that laura left out. hardeste in the family where as clae said theyad h just lost a child. the locusts had eatenll o their crops andhey were working in a hotel to kind of make ends meet which for very against civilized refined life she had grown up in and for pa as a father he wanted to provide for his family so laura didn't write about it in her book so to speak, but a play right decided they were going to tell the story a different way. it really is a important part of the story to be shared because it is so relatable to so many people. >> fascinating. >> i read tre is a part where had to walk hundreds of miles to go to work? >> yeah.

ago. our mission is to raise awareness about lung health and that lung canr is such a startling impact on women. and to raise critical money for research. >> so it's the numbe one cancer killer? i think breast cancer really gets a lost the lime light for people. this ithe nber one killer. 1987. is and it has been since it surpaed breast cancer. could behe stigma you mtf it have brought lung cancer on yourself which is complety absurd in addition, lung cancer also kills more men and women than the top three other cancers combined. it's really startling. >> what do you attribute to that. a lot of tim it seems that that means detection, diagnosis comes later than other forms of cancers is that the case of lung cancer? >> its. there is not any clear cut warning signs you have lung cancer. what we have learned from

you have to be your biggest advocate. if you have a persistent cough you really need to get checked out. >> screenings are like a low level ct right? >> you have to meet a certain amount of criteria like being a smoker for a certain number of years to have covered screenings. that's what we're putting dollars toward to say let's change the story diagnosed. 57 and so young to be diagnosed. from what i understand itas really a shock to you >> absolutely. i'm among the 98% that very uneducated. i never in my wildest dreams. >> were you a smoker cindy? >> i was previously yes. >> do they believe that was the cause. >> they did indicate it. i have quit numerous times

smoking. when i was diagnosed with it i'm one of those people, i had nothing wrong. absolutely nothing wrong with me. >> you had no symptoms? >> nothing. i was in the best of health. >> how did you get a diagnosis? >> i was working in my yard i went to take a break after mowing the lawn, sat down, coughed just once never had a persistent cough, just coughed, one time, and just had a minute blood come up and phlegm. made a mental note of it. i wasn't alarmed by it. and it happened again monday morning, and tuesday morning, but even smaller so it was like, my coworkers were concerned. they really pushed me into going to urgent care to have it looked at which i did and they gave me a chest scan there. and the doctor who reviewed

to me i think she knew, but didn't want to say, but she was proactive she called the hospital said let's set you up for a ct scan, and they are going to fix you up if you have pneumonia, you know we're going to take care of it and you'll be on your way. i knew i didn't have pneumonia, but at that time i still didn't on think i had lung cancer. >> for you guys, when you heard about it, i'm sure it was shocking to you too your mom is really young. >> well, the day she was talking about she didn't tell us about it so, i called the hospital they told me my mom was in emergency. i ran down by her and, [laughter] >> so it turned out what was there was actually someone you named garrett. >> that came a few months later after her diagnosis. my sisters, my family we ho find some kind of humor in this. staying at the hospital for 12

radiation, we named her tumor garrett. we decided he has to go. so we've had, we had a chemo christmas party at the hospital. where we made little gift bags that said triple g on it. >> that is so funny. >> garrett has got to go. we got involved with the american lung association and named our team ggg got to go. >> didor your mom, but also you in dealing with her diagnosis? >> yes absolutely. our family lives to laugh. and it doesn't matter the situation, you just got to keep smiling. keep moving forward. >> i wanted to say too for people it's not just smoking that can cause lung cancer. it can i radon in your home, get that tested and genetic predisposition and air
