us this morning with our wonderful ambassadors we have brought quite a variety this morning the two we are going to start with are two rescued ambassadors they were either/or fanned or injured in the wild, which is one of our certainly or missions to make sure -- >> he wants more. >> yes, he does. the wood pecker this is pierce and a lot of people see these in the trees but they are always going around the other side of the tree. >> not only the wonderful color ration but take a look at his tongue isn't that cool >> my goodness. >> he uses that to find bugs inside the trees. now allison hold out your hand. i will put this in your hand and squish it a little bit we will see if he uses his beek and tongue. >> he did. >> he gets all the things look. these guys are wonderful. he gave you a kiss afterwards. >> he says don't point at me. >> we can see these locally
9:53 am
around here. >> they are found across the east earn u.s. and a little bit of the pacific northwest but they need forest to survive. that is one of the biggest messages not just live forest but leave the dead trees in your yard or neighbourhood. that is what they need to find bugs is nest. >> here is a question what is the purpose of the red hair. you know, predators can see it. >> every species has some particular characteristic that makes them stand out and it is a way for them to identify themselves. females look different from the males they have actually less of the red, so these guys are meant to really advertise the fact that i am a beautiful wood pecker and i want all the females to come but they are monogamous once they get their pairing they stay and defend territory >> look at the pelican. >> i am going to go ahead and hand him off.
9:54 am
we will talk about panama. panama was orphaned when he was only weeks old so he has been raised by our animal ambassador team and pelicans are just such a wonderful shore bird. again you are talking about protecting our shores making sure we don't have trash out there. he needs to fish out in clean waters because they are the only pelican that does the neat dive have you guys seen them? where they will fly you know 30 feet up in the air and go i see a fish and turn and dive. look at that. >> i think he sees a fish. >> that pouch can hold up to 3- gallons of water and fish. much more than the stomach can hold. >> how long is his beak. >> that is at least a foot long and that is what he uses for fishing. >> i think our camera man dave had a tuna fish sandwich a few minutes ago >> chief these were one time endangered because of dtt but we have cleaned up on that and
9:55 am
they have come back. >> the show stoppers are these two. >> our two penguins this is pj. >> listen to them. >> are they talking. >> penguins are very much a pairing up, so these two are a pair that raised chicks together and they have been together for about 10 years now. >> are they monogamous. >> yes, as long as they are successful. monogamous mean as lot of things to a lot of people but penguins are one of the more monogamous animals but they have to be success raising chicks otherwise they will find another spouse. >> as a couple do they bicker? i hear they bicker >> more so than not. what is interesting tj if you want to go down there again. watch this the female will respond first to usually tj. like oh, i want to go but watch the male will go wait a minute that is my girl. he will get in the way and telltj that is mine. >> is there a way just from looking at them, like this, to tell which is the male and
9:56 am
female. >> you know, we can't tell really. until we see their behaviour or if we do a genetic test. of course, theeasiest way is we see little muddy footprints on her back and she lays the egg. >> we are out of time we have to get the bald eagle in. >> let's bring maddie another rescue, sea world and busch gardens rescued by the autobahn center she fell out of her nest and broke her wing when she was small. what a fantastic symbol not only for united states but conservation. >> we have to go to break thank you very much beautiful animal we will be back >> here she goes. to end all things. >> okay. >> a little gift to the united states
