we begin tonight with breaking news. two prince george's county firefighters shot while responding to a call in temple hills. >> the shooting happened around 7:30 this evening on sharon road. we're told that another person was also shot. fox 5's sarah simmons is live tonight with the very latest on the shooting. we apologize let's go to sarah now with the latest. >> reporter: shawn and tony, a very hectic evening and we're waiting to get more details. we understand that any moment now prince george's county police department is expected to give us a briefing as to what expectly they know at this point, any details on the situation. it appears as though they're getting ready to come up here now. to get you up to date, we know that two firefighters were shot and have been seriously injured. prince george's county fire department saying one was taken to southern maryland hospital and one to baltimore shock
10:02 pm
trauma and is in grave condition. again one civilian shot as you mentioned. this is in the 5000 block of sharon road in temple hill. we do understand the shooter is in custody. firefighters were apparently responding for some sort of welfare check at that location. they knocked on the door and the person who opened the door, we believe at this point, shot at firefighters. but we're still trying to get that clarified as they are right now getting ready to hold this press conference, let's pan over and listen in here. >> good evening. the prince george's county fire department to give you basic information on the event that occurred tonight. at approximately 7:30 this evening, members of the prince george's county fire department and police department were called to the address 5007 sharon road. because a resident had been communicating with a concerned individual.
10:03 pm
that that resident might be experiencing some sort of a medical condition. so the firefighters and police officers were there to lend aid. the resident in the home was not responsive, so a decision was made to gain entry into the home and check on that person's welfare. as that was unfolding, the individual inside the home fired a number of rounds, striking two prince george's county firefighters and the concerned individual who had led public safety to that address during the course of the evening. at this point the individual who was in that residence who fired those shots is in police custody at our criminal investigations division. he's being cooperative and we are having a conversation with both him and the concerned resident that brought this circumstance to our attention initially. at this point i'm going to ask assistant chief barksdale to me
10:04 pm
about his firefighters and i will be available to answer any questions you have after that. >> thank you, chief. as the chief said that when the units arrived the on the scene around 7:30 this evening to render assistance, shots were fired and they called out for assistance and two were critically injured, one was transported to shock trauma in baltimore. the second one was transported to southern maryland. right now the families are with both members and at this time i'm not able to release their specific condition. we're still waiting on some other information to come in before we provide that. later on we plan to have another news conference. the fire chief is out of town right now. he's on his way back from pennsylvania and later this evenin

more detailed information as far as their current conditions. there was an engine company and a medic unit from the -- >> one injured from the fire company and one from the medic unit. >>. [ inaudible question ] >> at this point we are two and a half hours into the circumstance. as soon as we come into information that will make that more clear we'll be happy to provide it to you but it's very preliminary right now. [ inaudible question ]
10:06 pm
my understanding at this point is they were in the process of trying to gain entry into the home to ascertain the condition of the person inside. and as those two -- as that process was unfolding, the shots ring out. >> can you clarify whether or not the person that called 911 is that the same person who opened fire? are there two different people we're talking about? >> there are two different people. one person who is the concerned citizen who has the concern for the resident in the home. and that is the person who is with public safety on the outside trying to come in, and there's the resident inside who is the person who shoots. >> was the civilian injured as well. >> yes. the civilian was injured in the exchange of -- in the

but not seriously. [ inaudible question ] >> i'm going to be very clear about that. there was only gunfire from the resident at the home directed at public safety. after public safety got into the residence, the situation immediately became calm and no police officers fired any weapons. it was simply the resident's side. [ inaudible question ] >> after several rounds were fired, and i think they realized it was public safety, that's when the confrontation ended. [ inaudible question ] >> we are very preliminary in this to know. that will be part of our investigation. but again two and a half hours in, these are the basic facts. those questions will come out as a result of the investigation which is really just

now. >> these firefighters, how much experience do they have. >> the individual in the medic unit is a senior member and the member from the engine company is more junior member. [ inaudible question ] >> both are in critical. >> which fire department or which station? >> we're not ready to release that at this time. thank you all. appreciate your time. >> the prince george's county police chief along with a spokesperson for the fire department. we got a little more clarification. we did confirm two firefighters were indeed shot. a civilian shot in the shoulder. we're told those firefighters -- hold on is sarah simmons standing by? we're going to go to sarah? can you hear us? give us an update on
10:09 pm
just heard. >> reporter: well, shawn, you could tell it was kind of confusing early on so we were trying to get a update on the details here. there was someone, a concerned citizen making the call to 911. concerned about this person at 5007 sharon road. when the emergency crews responded when they got there, no one answered, and they tried to make entry and that's when shots were fired from someone inside the home. at this point we don't know what kind of concern we're talking about here that the concerned citizen had. we don't know, they're still investigating right now. the civilian was injured but not seriously and of course the shooter is in custody as we have reported before and those two firefighters are in critical condition as we've been reporting. so that's kind of the latest what we know right now. you know, it's really quite sad
10:10 pm
mentioned shawn, two firefighters going up to a door just to try to help somebody and then to try to get inside to do that job they end up getting fired upon. so a lot of people still in shock here from the fire department as well. the fire chief in pennsylvania is making his way back briefing the media later on as well. but again firefighters responding to that welfare check and now they find themselves in danger as well. so one shot in the chest is what we were told. another sustained several gunshot wounds and one civilian shot in the shoulder. one of the firefighters in grave condition, another in critical but a spokesperson for the fire department just told us both in critical. a lot of information flying around here now. we're hoping to get more accurate details as the evening goes on. >> you've been around the scene there or around some of the officials for a while. i would imagine that this is
10:11 pm
what's your perspective as you observed them? >> reporter: well, i think pretty somber, obviously. and i think again they're still in a state of shock and a lot of them have been cord onned off away from us. making sure they get all the details right. so we haven't had that much exposure to them. they have been kind of trying to do their own thing. we're about a mile and a half away from the scene so we're not quite that close to that location. we do have another photographer, another crew that is helping us out perhaps a little bit closer. but it's really been tough to gauge kind of what they're going through. of course when you're in that sort of situation, you're in shock. you just do your job. that's what they're trained to do. so i'm sure tonight, once they kind of calm down, things might start to hit a little bit closer to home. >> sarah simmons reporting from the scene. we'll check back in with you in just a little bit. we should alsome
10:12 pm
chief mentioned they do have suspect in custody and that suspect is cooperating with them at this time. again, the circumstances of this, as the chief indicated, they're two and a half hours, a little bit more than two and a half hours into this investigation. but as he was describing what transpired, he was very methodical and said, you know, there was a concerned citizen who made a call. police and firefighters responded. didn't get a response, and then made the decision to make entry. and that's when they were fired upon. so we don't know the circumstances of why they were fired upon. we don't know the condition of the person who was in that house who fired upon them. all of that remains to be seen. what we do know tonight is that two firefighters are in very, very serious condition. one firefighter described as being in grave condition tonight and the concerned citizen having been shot. most reports are saying in the shoulder.
10:13 pm
>> these are live images from the scene. the actual scene there on the left. if you can see the mailbox beyond the trees there in between the two yellow tapes, that is the house where it took place. this is a tree-lined residential neighborhood. we are going to stay there on the scene and work to get more information, the very latest on what may have led to this shooting here in the 5000 block of sharon road in temple hills. we'll have more on this story coming up. we'll be right back.

that is where one of the firefighters i believe was transported to. jenny, what can you tell us? >> reporter: this is a sad scene that we've seen quite a few times, unfortunately in recent weeks and months when someone, a police officer is injured and all of their comrades come to the hoep hospital to hold vigil. only now we're seeing it with a firefighter which is certainly not something we have seen in this area in quite a while. this is med star southern maryland hospital in clinton, maryland. and one of the firefighters who was shot tonight inside was brought to the emergency room here. reportedly this is the one who was shot in the chest. initial reports were that they were in extremely critical condition. and when word like that gets out, certainly all of the fellow firefighters show up here. so we're seeing a number of ambulances and fire cars pull into the hospital here.
10:45 pm
you can see they're gist standing outside the emergency room. mark brady and some of the other officials have told us families have made it to the hospital. one of the firefighters was brought here. the other one taken to shock trauma at the university of maryland medical center in baltimore. families with both of them and clearly firefighter family here as well so this is certainly early in this situation but you can see a great concern here by the turnout. we have been told it's possible we may get a press conference later this evening but for now they're holding vigil in front of the emergency room. back to you. >> thank you for the update. we appreciate it. new details now in the investigation into former dc mayor's vincent gray's 2010 campaign. new documents released today along with evidence that had never preefs hi been made

public. matt ackland has the details. >> reporter: just after 11:00 a.m., a huge document released connected to the 2010 vincent gray investigation. an investigation that lasted years and resulted in exposing a more than $6 hundred,000 shadow campaign. 12 convictions all charged with campaign violations to get vincent gray elected mayor. we're seeing for the first time search warrants of homes, businesses, storage rooms, computers, phones and e-mail records. the court releasing them five months after the case was closed by the u.s. attorney. and mayor gray first spoke to fox 5. >> what i say to people is that i've said from the very beginning. i did nothing, i was not involved in any of this. >> reporter: it's clear to read asked feds built their case against jeffrey thompson who financed the shadow campaign and others workin

nicely. we've got cool nights and warm afternoons to speak about and we're going to end up seeing a nice warmer flow. temperatures are going to be really comfortable. here's a look at what we're talking about for tomorrow for daytime highs. 80s in sight for monday. can you believe it? we're going to have absolutely lots of warm weather by the time we get to the beginning of the week and we're also talking sunshine that comes with it. so look at this. widespread everywhere 80s plus. not bad at all. and we're also talking some shower chances but that's like a week away. in the meantime our highs today below the seasonal average. we were into the low 60s at all three airports. we should really be in the upper 60s for this time of year. so once we get into the weekend, after we get through tomorrow and into monday, we're pretty much going to be where we should be. saturday and sunday we're going to be where we should be because we'll be upper 60s and low 70s. 54 at dc, the same at quantico.

cooler to the south, 45 at frederick, 50 degrees at winchester and 51 at martinsburg. chilly tonight with our overnight lows into the 30s and 40s. could see a little bit of patchy fog late tonight into tomorrow morning. be aware of that. that also will not be widespread. but as the cooler air retreating to the north and this weekend we're going to see that southerly flow start to kick in. winds will move in from the south and the southwest and that's where we're going to get our temperature boost. ridge of high pressure, large and in charge, giving us the sunshine we're going to have but it's also acting ago a blocking mechanism. it will start to move to the south once we get into late sunday and into monday, and once it does that we are going to end up seeing an approach of a frontal system get a little bit closer to us and that's going to come at least good news moisture with not any wet weather. keeping the moisture well to the east and also the same story to the back side
10:51 pm
that front is going to move in and not bring us any rainfall. so that's good news. that will happen about tuesday. but it will bring us cooler weather. tomorrow by midday about 63 degrees, plenty of sunshine and as we head through tonight once again a little on the cool side, 42 degrees your overnight low, it will be chilly and tomorrow plenty of bright skies. 68 degrees, exactly where we should be temperature-wise. here is a look at your 7-day forecast. we're going to be warming up to 80 degrees on monday as i said, so a wonderful, spectacular day. a few clouds on tuesday with that frontal system, cooling down behind it by wednesday at 68 degrees. we have a chance of seeing showers by friday. in the meantime let's enjoy this weekend. i'm serving up the sunshine and lots of warm conditions for you. tony? >> thank you gwen. a family became internet sensations. two brothers recorded their sister comin
