august 2013 killing but he agreed to a last-minute deal that could have him out of jail by june. paul wagner joins us live from the courthouse in fairfax with the story on this. what's going on here? >> reporter: hi, laura. john geere's mother was very much against this deal telling the prosecutor she wanted a conviction and a life sentence. he told reporters today he had to weigh many factors including the fact that the family did not want to put his daughter on the stand a a conviction was no sure thing. adam torres stood in court today and in a quiet voice said i am truly sorry for my actions. i am heartbroken for mr. geere's children. there are no words i can adequately say that can suppress my remorse. with that it was over. there will be no trial unless the judge rejects the case of one year in jail. adam was facing a murder charge
