hundreds of people to be evacuated on the red line less than 48 hours ago. >> passengers say they couldn't get answers about what to do and metro's own board chairman said today the response in his words were panicky. tom fitzgerald is live at friendship station. i know you spoke with people on the train and the metro gm today. so what happened? >> reporter: laura, it's like this. you talk to these passengers who were on this train and they'll tell you flat out. this was not only scary because there was an insulatetor fire going on in the tunnel, this they will tell you was scary because in case after case we have been told by passengers that employees here at metro were acting, in the passengers' words, panicky and not giving clear information about what to do and where to go. talk to chuck holmes. he was one of the very first people on the first car of the train that was evacuated.

smoke, he saw what he believes to be flames. but when he asked the operator of the train what to do, you'll hear in chuck's own words, the operator would not answer his questions. >> i and some other passengers directly asked him why, what's going on and he wouldn't answer. in fact he wouldn't even make eye contact. he seemed very nervous. >> reporter: in fact, another passenger who was on that very train shot this video you're looking at right now. you can see passengers moving to the backs of these cars through the doors at the ends of the train. while this was going on, passengers tell us another announcement was going on telling passengers not to open doors. now, that meant the side doors of the trains, not the ones inbetween the cars. passengers say that was all really confusing. very scary because they didn't know what to do. some witness essay they saw other passengers trying to self-evacuate by opening t

side doors. a dc counsel heefrg today, jack evans at councilman and wmata board member asked why they seemed so panicky especially when you consider the fact that metro has had so much experience in dealing with these types of fires. the gm spoke to us afterwards and he said he aware of these complaints but he pointed out everyone evacuated safely. he investigated to see whether or not proper procedures were followed. >> clearly for the people on the train, it's, you know, very stressful. i get it. for sure. but we have to -- we have to basically get back people in a safe area as quickly as possible. but you can't start making decisions without knowing what you're making them on. >> reporter: passengers say the final indignity was this. once they finally did get off those trains, they were met with a bottle neck of people a

station door. why? well it turns out even though the trains had stopped, the turn styles had not. the passengers had to take out their fare cards and pay to get out of this station. we're live in friendship heights tonight, tom fitzgerald, fox 5 local news. >> also in the district, a wilson high school student was stabbed in the leg this morning during an attempted robbery a block from the school. >> 17-year-old had just parked his car on a dead-end street when a man approached him with a knife and demanded his wallet. paul wagner joins us live from northwest tonight with that story. paul, terrifying. >> reporter: hey laura and sarah, this is where it happened right here on grant road northwest. the student came here, parked his car right here on this dead end street around 9:00 this morning. let me show you where he was going. he was heading right across the street right over there to wilson high school. just a block away or so. but according to dc police, the man approached with a

demanded that the student turn over his cell phone and wallet. there was then a struggle. the student was stabbed in the thigh and then the man ran away, getting nothing. a source familiar with the investigation says the 17-year-old was able to bandage the stab wound to his leg before making his way across nebraska avenue and up to the front entrance of the school. that's where an ambulance was called which then took the teen to a nearby hospital. a source described the injury as a superficial stab wound. police recovered the knife and spent a considerable amount of time processing the scene on grant road. a popular place to park for students who can leave their vehicles there all day without being ticketed. >> it was an attempted robbery to our knowledge the suspect did not get any of the possessions of our victim in this case. but again, there is still a suspect at large. the description that was provided to us was an

not everybody is going to see it but one or two of those could be strong with temperatures getting into the mid 80s tomorrow. the second half of the week looks a lot cooler. shower chances are going to be sticking around buy of the direction of the wind. here's what we're talking about. 86 degrees tomorrow, hot, maybe a rumble of thunder. 66 degrees on wednesday. how about that 20-degree temperature drop. it will be cool, some area of light rain and drizzle also on wednesday because our wind direction will be coming in off the ocean. meanwhile we hit 80 at dulles today. it felt great, didn't it? not too humid out there and such a comfortable evening. all are the warmer temperatures south and west tonight. dc is at 76 degrees.

also dry. we've had some high clouds coming on through and eventually we'll be watching up towards pennsylvania for the development of a few showers and storms but i think they'll stay up there tonight. watch what happens. we start out with good sunshine and gradually the clouds increase and that frontal boundary begins to to sink south and then it stalls down through southern virginia and the north carolina line which allows that wind to come in off the ocean and increase the clouds for wednesday and bring in a little bit of a drizzle activity. i also want to mention tomorrow we're expecting a pretty significant severe weather outbreak in the middle part of the country and it's possible we could have one or two isolated strong storms around here. you can see we're dry tonight and you begin to see those showers showing up in the morn
