hundreds of people to be evacuated on the red line less than 48 hours ago. >> passengers say they couldn't get answers about what to do and metro's own board chairman said today the response in his words were panicky. tom fitzgerald is live at friendship station. i know you spoke with people on the train and the metro gm today. so what happened? >> reporter: laura, it's like this. you talk to these passengers who were on this train and they'll tell you flat out. this was not only scary because there was an insulatetor fire going on in the tunnel, this they will tell you was scary because in case after case we have been told by passengers that employees here at metro were acting, in the passengers' words, panicky and not giving clear information about what to do and where to go. talk to chuck holmes. he was one of the very first people on the first car of the train that was evacuated.

smoke, he saw what he believes to be flames. but when he asked the operator of the train what to do, you'll hear in chuck's own words, the operator would not answer his questions. >> i and some other passengers directly asked him why, what's going on and he wouldn't answer. in fact he wouldn't even make eye contact. he seemed very nervous. >> reporter: in fact, another passenger who was on that very train shot this video you're looking at right now. you can see passengers moving to the backs of these cars through the doors at the ends of the train. while this was going on, passengers tell us another announcement was going on telling passengers not to open doors. now, that meant the side doors of the trains, not the ones inbetween the cars. passengers say that was all really confusing. very scary because they didn't know what to do. some witness essay they saw other passengers trying to self-evacuate by opening t

side doors. a dc counsel heefrg today, jack evans at councilman and wmata board member asked why they seemed so panicky especially when you consider the fact that metro has had so much experience in dealing with these types of fires. the gm spoke to us afterwards and he said he aware of these complaints but he pointed out everyone evacuated safely. he investigated to see whether or not proper procedures were followed. >> clearly for the people on the train, it's, you know, very stressful. i get it. for sure. but we have to -- we have to basically get back people in a safe area as quickly as possible. but you can't start making decisions without knowing what you're making them on. >> reporter: passengers say the final indignity was this. once they finally did get off those trains, they were met with a bottle neck of people a

station door. why? well it turns out even though the trains had stopped, the turn styles had not. the passengers had to take out their fare cards and pay to get out of this station. we're live in friendship heights tonight, tom fitzgerald, fox 5 local news. >> also in the district, a wilson high school student was stabbed in the leg this morning during an attempted robbery a block from the school. >> 17-year-old had just parked his car on a dead-end street when a man approached him with a knife and demanded his wallet. paul wagner joins us live from northwest tonight with that story. paul, terrifying. >> reporter: hey laura and sarah, this is where it happened right here on grant road northwest. the student came here, parked his car right here on this dead end street around 9:00 this morning. let me show you where he was going. he was heading right across the street right over there to wilson high school. just a block away or so. but according to dc police, the man approached with a

demanded that the student turn over his cell phone and wallet. there was then a struggle. the student was stabbed in the thigh and then the man ran away, getting nothing. a source familiar with the investigation says the 17-year-old was able to bandage the stab wound to his leg before making his way across nebraska avenue and up to the front entrance of the school. that's where an ambulance was called which then took the teen to a nearby hospital. a source described the injury as a superficial stab wound. police recovered the knife and spent a considerable amount of time processing the scene on grant road. a popular place to park for students who can leave their vehicles there all day without being ticketed. >> it was an attempted robbery to our knowledge the suspect did not get any of the possessions of our victim in this case. but again, there is still a suspect at large. the description that was provided to us was an

hispanic male possibly in his 30s in all dark clothing. if anybody in this neighborhood saw somebody out of the order, maybe a vehicle that was out of place, contact police and provide us with information that will assist us in this investigation. >> reporter: it was just last week that another wilson high school student was robbed at knife point not far from here at fort reno park on the other side of the chesapeake street. so today the principal put out a statement to parents it was up on the website. while this event did not occur on campus, we are committed to providing safe passage for students to and from school each day and will continue working closely with all community resources to keep our students safe. live in numerator. paul wagner, fox 5 local news. >> fox 5 is in montgomery county tonight w

investigating a murder in gaithersburg. >> they say an 18-year-old was attacked at a park overnight and died at the hospital. fox 5's alexandra limon is live with more on this investigation. alex? >> reporter: well, guys, you can see this is normally a place children come to play. but police say last night a man was murdered here. we don't know if this homicide was gang related. the montgomery county police department says that's just 1 of several avenues they're investigating. but tonight the victim's family tells me they just want answers about why this young dad's life was taken. >> i don't want to believe that it's my son. confused why this had to happen to him. he was trying to change his life around. >> reporter: oscar benitez was just 18 years old and now police are investigating his murder trying to piece

happened sunday night that ended with his death. the victim's family says he was a proud new dad of a baby girl. >> he has a daughter. she's almost eight months now. and would do anything for her. >> reporter: man afternoon dozen of evidence markers were scattered in the parking lot of the park. his family tells us benitez was stabbed to death. >> he was the only brother i had. >> reporter: montgomery village residents looking to enjoy the park were turned away monday. as park police and montgomery park investigators continued to comb through and photograph evidence. >> it seems like it's really too close to home. this is the park that i bring my children to and it's just scary to think this could have happened when we were here. >> reporter: two other people were also injured in this incident, according to police, and they were

released from the hospital. however, at this point it is still unclear if those two people are witnesses, if they were also victims, or if they are suspects. police say they are questioning those two people. reporting live in montgomery village, alexandra limon, fox 5 local news. >> now to the district where about a dozen protesters turned out for dc united's stadium groundbreaking. mayor muriel bowser says the construction at buzzard point will bring plenty of jobs in texas revenue to the city. those against the new stadium fear there has not been enough investigation into the site to know if a broad demolition could be dangerous. >> any time you have construction on the city all of the developers, construction crews have to have responsible that it an approved environmental plan and this site is know different and we will proceed with the utmost caution in making sure the site is cl

the mid 80s is the way things are looking. a few clouds coming through right now and i expect to see more clouds tomorrow and as we go through the evening, that warm southerly flow courtesy of an area of high pressure off the coast will continue. but you also see the beginnings of a line of showers that will likely stay up through pennsylvania tonight and overnight. but that may visit us during the afternoon tomorrow. so we're going to include a chance for a thunderstorm tomorrow afternoon and we're thinking about you maryland vote rs tomorrow, maybe earlier is a better choice. for the second half of our day tomorrow we may have to dodge a couple of thunderstorms and we could actually use that rain and a little bit of tree pollen washing water as well. for tonight though, temperatures should be real comfortable, probably not 80 at 7:00, but upper 70s ought to feel comfortable, by 11:00, 71 and yes, a little summer preview ask in the forecast for tomorrow. we could use that water and we'll time them out with you hour b

>> billy paul died yesterday at his home in new jersey. he was hospitalized last week after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. he began his career when he was just 11 years old and went on to attend the west philadelphia music school. he performed with jazz and soul legends. his career spanned more than 60 years. paul won a grammy for "me and mrs. jones." he was inducted into the philadelphia walk of fame in 2008. he was 81 years old. >> another one, unfortunately. meanwhile the world continues to mourn the death of pop superstar prince. today an audio recording was released of a medical emergency suffered six days before prince was found dead. >> the audio transmissions obtained by tmz chronicle a pilot who had to get his plane on the

>> we get cool for a few days. so we'll keep that pollen in mind and maybe keep it in check. we've been talking about the fact that we need a little bit of rain and we've got some of that in the forecast as well. so we get you started first with a look at some of your weather headlines. because we do know it's going to be on the hot side tomorrow. warmer than today. we got up to 78 degrees today and it will be slightly humid so we'll keep those comfortable temperatures going all night long. then keeping in mind the maryland folks heading to the polls tomorrow, there could be a couple of afternoon thunderstorms.

not everybody is going to see it but one or two of those could be strong with temperatures getting into the mid 80s tomorrow. the second half of the week looks a lot cooler. shower chances are going to be sticking around buy of the direction of the wind. here's what we're talking about. 86 degrees tomorrow, hot, maybe a rumble of thunder. 66 degrees on wednesday. how about that 20-degree temperature drop. it will be cool, some area of light rain and drizzle also on wednesday because our wind direction will be coming in off the ocean. meanwhile we hit 80 at dulles today. it felt great, didn't it? not too humid out there and such a comfortable evening. all are the warmer temperatures south and west tonight. dc is at 76 degrees.

also dry. we've had some high clouds coming on through and eventually we'll be watching up towards pennsylvania for the development of a few showers and storms but i think they'll stay up there tonight. watch what happens. we start out with good sunshine and gradually the clouds increase and that frontal boundary begins to to sink south and then it stalls down through southern virginia and the north carolina line which allows that wind to come in off the ocean and increase the clouds for wednesday and bring in a little bit of a drizzle activity. i also want to mention tomorrow we're expecting a pretty significant severe weather outbreak in the middle part of the country and it's possible we could have one or two isolated strong storms around here. you can see we're dry tonight and you begin to see those showers showing up in the morn

start sneaking closer to hagerstown by 8:00 in the morning. those dissipate and go back to sunshine and we see a new line begin to develop. this is spotty around 6:00 we're going to watch for that. one or two of them may fuel up on the heat and the humidity we're going to be seeing. this looks like it will continue into wednesday with a lot of clouds, a little bit of drizzle and some light rain maybe developing. we could use the rain, we've been rather dry. overnight temperatures will be comfortable in the mid 60s to close to 70 and tomorrow it looks like our temperatures are going to be right back into the mid 80s with an afternoon or evening rumble of thunder possible. let's wrap it up with your 7-day forecast. boy, it looks like 62 degrees on thursday. that's kind of chilly, right? i'll have to get my boots out again. >> up and down. >> it really is. by the time we get into friday, 67 degrees. our fox 5 rocks

community into a frenzy. the wilson high school student was stabbed during an attempted robbery one block from the school. paul wagner starts us off tonight live from northwest. paul? >> reporter: tony, let me give you perspective on how this happened. i am standing here, that's wilson high school right hand me. the student, a 17-year-old senior came and parked his car right here on grant road, it's a dead end. at that point police say this man in his 30s approached, pulled a knife, and demanded that this student turned over a cell phone and a wallet. but then there was a struggle and during that struggle the student was stabbed in the thigh. the man got away with nothing. a source familiar with the investigation says the 17-year-old was able to bandage
