this is fox 5 local news at 10:00. ♪ 10:00 that local opera singer was raising her voice outside the white house for an important cause. days after she was arrested here for sing on the streets of old town. >> one northern virginia neighborhood after a lifeguard said she was attacked and raped on the job. as hermine brings severe weather, the dc region is bracing for another blast of heat. i'm shawn yancy. >> i'm jim lokay. the effects of once hurricane hermine packing a punch along the east coast. beaches in new york, connecticut, hermine is bringing dangerous waves and current to the region and they're putting a damper on last big beach day of the summer and the effects of

couple days. take a look at this video from the deck of a royal caribbean cruise ship got caught up in the rough seas. as you can see, the waves are pretty choppy, passengers on board the anthem of the sea said it seem to happen in the blink of an eye. >> that's when the ship started swaying, and it was like 90 miles an hour winds. >> park in maryland is closed. the campground set to reopen tomorrow. the beach will be reassesseded. pellets bring in sue palka. around here dealing with the temperatures in the mid 90's. >> we're swaping h words. we're going to give you the latest on hermine. still has winds of 70 miles an hour, we're going to focus on what the local effects for your back to work and

tuesday will be. we're going to see a hot september pattern setting up. we got the jet stream going to take a little bit of that heat closer into our area and start making the humidity more noticeable as the week goes on. not terrible tomorrow but definitely heading above 90 for tomorrow. in fact, as we get ready for this heat wave, which i think will last five days, i think tomorrow will be right around 92, but keeping the humidity still under control for tomorrow. tomorrow morning, it was rather chilly if you were out. it was lovely. a great labor day. there were a lot of places in the 50's, pickup temperatures the busstop and welcome back to school virginia. 64 to 72. a little bit of a breeze out of the northwest keeps that humidity nice and low tomorrow. after school, 85 to the. 92 for the district, 91 fo

that is a common number. i will say wanted to mention hermine still out there. we had a little bit of a cloud cover from hermine around our area, showers staying offshore. while this is no longer a tropical system. it's like a northeaster. last check, wind of 70 miles per hour. unfortunately. it's still kind of close to the coast and with wind of 60 miles per hour even tomorrow afternoon, big surf expected in tropical storm warning continue forgot eastern long island up to massachusetts and parts of new england. it begins to weaken pretty rapidly tomorrow and by thursday, we think it's moving away. unfortunately our heat wave will not move away that fast. i'll show you the seven-day forecast and let you know which days we may be talking about record heat later this week. new at 10:00 a district man is behind bars accused of an attempted sexual assault at a metro station.

the orange line in vienna. they say anthony sin collar of dc allegedly exposed himself and tried to force a woman to perform a sex act. he was arrested and being held without bail. fox 5 is in alexandria tonight with the latest on a rape investigation that stunned the community. someone attacked a lifeguard in the middle of the day at a condominium pool on saturday near valley forge drive. lindsey watts has the latest. >> reporter: as we have been walking around this community today, we have come upon people having conversations about this. everybody is so concerned. also today, we have alexandria police cars circling around this lot keeping an extra eye on the area. this community pool is where the 24-year-old lifeguard was attacked saturday. she says by a stranger with a gun. as you see people out here celebrating labor day. it's hard to believe but police say unlike today, there were no residents because it was

they say the guy forced the woman into the pool house building there, then raped her. this was around 2:00 in the afternoon. hundreds of people in their homes in this area, yet nobody seemed to see anything and the guy got away. such a disturbing crime and people here certainly feel that. i am walking with my mace and, which is i never did during the day. but this happened at 2:00. so i feel scared now. i don't know what the laws are for stun guns, but it crossed my mind to have a little extra because he did have a gun. >> i saw the lifeguard around 12:00 when i was walking my dog. she was just opening, you know, doing her routine. and that's, even more shocking because i saw her earlier that day. two hours before around 12:00. and for that to happen, just right after i walked my dog, it just unbelievable that something like this would happen. >> reporter: this is one of those police

today, one of the extra patrols in this area, investigators are also working on a sketch of the suspect based on what the victim can tell them. so far, we only have a very vague description of that guy. white man, mid 30's, tall and thin with dark eyes. residents i've been speaking to are thinking of this attacker had to be familiar with the community and especially the pool area to be able to do this and get away. police say they should have that sketch finished up in the next few days and of course, we'll bring that to you just as soon as we have it. in alexandria, lindsey watts fox 5 local news. fox 5 in prince william county. it happened while the victim was walking along jefferson davis highway in wood bridge. man drove up asked the victim if she wanted a ride. she said no. police say he then exposed himself. girl ran home, told her parent. police only have a vague description of the suspect.

releasing the names of people killed in crash. howard jackson and 50-year-old pandora brakmore earliest morning. the car that caused the crash ran a red light. the driver is recovering in a hospital in critical condition. a woman is recovering after struck by a car in the northeast. this happened around 4:00 in the 800 block of new york avenue. 1800 block, this marks the fifth pedestrian struck in the dc region in the last week. the victim is in critical condition, we're told the driver remained on the scene sent cooperating with police. well, it is labor day and this marks the end of the summer season. it is just the beginning of the political season >> the local candidates who share their messages at the gaithersburg labor day weekend parade >> a welcome surprise for a group of firefighters in north virginia, the act of kindness caught them off disbarred. >> a medical student never thought his skills

it is labor day, politics took center stage across the country. take a look. >> bill clinton stopping by the the parade if detroit. in an attempt to lock down union votes for his wife's presidential campaign. >> ♪ >> democratic vice presidential tim kaine and joe biden stopping by the labor day parade in pittsburgh. here in our area, one of the labor day traditions is annual parade in gaithersburg. >> this year's parade was even more popular with the candidates looking for votes. fox 5 tom fitzgerald shows us. >> reporter: we know politics these days means a

labor day may be the end of the rope for summer but it kicks off the political season in high gear. tom fitzgerald fox 5 the political world is mourning a pioneer. before sarah palin, before anne coulter. as a woman, she broke ground. she was credited with helping to feed the equal rights amendment in the 1970s that would have out allowed gender discrimination and she founded the political group, she died in her home after a battle with cancer. fill list was 92 years old a group of firefighters in fairfax county got a welcome surprise. members of the world mission society church in virginia hand-delivered lunches with framed letters of appreciation to fire stations across courthouse. take a look. oo >>

meals to firefighters in berks, springfield, centerville and fairfax. looks like everyone was happy. medical students learn how to save lives. >> one student was put on the test at a gym and let say he past the test with flying colors. here's the story from clarksville maryland. >> reporter: he got to columbia gym hours later than he normally does on friday august 26. but he was just in time to handle an emergency. a 60 something-year-old man who had been working out on a stationary bike just collapsed while leaving the cardio room. >> i checked his pulled. i rolled him over, and i just quickly started doing c

medical school. >> reporter: mohammad a fourth year med student at the universal of maryland had learned cpr at school and used it a few times on cardiac rotations but never saved a life outside the hospital until now >> it was about ten minutes of straight compressions, which is a solid exhausting work-out. and i checked her pulse in between, luckily i had help. and by the end he had a pulse, the empty people came in perfect timing. >> reporter: strapped inside the 57,000 square foot gym are cpr trained. everyone at the gym says they were very relieved 24-year-old mohammad was there to do the heavy lifting. >> we're so grateful and his timing was perfect. he was just couldn't have been more valuable and helpful in that moment to save a life >> i'm a medica

when a man with a gun raped her in the pool house building. a dc man is in jail excused of exposing himself and trying to get a woman to perform a sexual act on a metro train. it happened on an orange line train. metro police arrested anthony sinclair. he's being held without bond. maryland is closed because of the effects of the storm system hermine. the campground is said to reopen tomorrow. they will reassess the beach for safety tomorrow as well. time of night where i meander. we just >> you know, talk a little bit what we saw today. a lot of people mid time last week, they were look at this week with a lot of inat the point date, time and location, but we had a beautiful week around the dmv >> people feel ripped off unofficial independent of summer. you know what i say? go next weekend. this coming weekend

fantastic >> this was not brought to you by the tourism board of ocean city. >> i'm not giving for you out of this one. people should be heading to the beach. first of all the water will be more settled after hermine is out of the way and we are about to begin a five-day heat wave. tomorrow will be beautiful. lots of sunshine, lower humidity. and another sun, filled day. we get up and over 90 as early as tomorrow. the heat is returning. 92 tomorrow but near record heat by the time we get to friday and saturday. mid to upper 90's and it's going to feel closer to a hunch we're dry here and we have a couple of chances for storms but they're very small chances. wednesday maybe west of town, maybe a stray thunderstorm thursday. let me jump you to that seven-day forecast. we promised we'd show it. we're up to 95 by thursday. putting a storm on there but most people will not see that.

attack on the pentagon. film's producers say the military gave the project its full cooperation >> i call it the forgotten 911. everybody rightly focuses on the world trade center, that's where the vast majority of deaths occurred. that was a national calamity, and people are right to focus on that. but you know, several of my friends died in the pentagon as well. many of my ship mates. i was very -- i was pleased that somebody was willing to tell that story. 911 inside the pentagon airs tomorrow. i'm looking forward to seeing that. 911 was actually my second day on the job here at fox 5. and just remembering what it was like to be on the outside to meet the many families who lost so much and went through that. it's going to be

not so much tomorrow. you really might not even notice the humidity tomorrow. but we're back up to the 92. thursday, friday, saturday are our three hot days, 95 to 96 where it will feel like it's going to be closer to 100 and we may challenge records on friday and saturday. we're kind of all over the place with temperatures tonight. few cooler spots like gaithersburg at 64. culpeper at 66. here in the district, the warmer spot. the buildings and all the concrete holding in the heat of the day, we're at 78. 74 in annapolis and hermine is still spinning and we'll have another update and another look at hermine coming up in a few minutes but the rip currents, big surf out there and we're going on several days of that. it takes toll and chewed up many of the beaches in the midatlantic and

here's another storm. the latest update on hurricane newton moving towards the ba ha. it will likely spread five to ten inches of rain as it approaches -- it's heading for arizona and it may be a big rain producer. let's watch that one and see if those remnants get picked up. a little too far away to know what's going to happen there. we think hermine will get a little bit of a kick as high pressure begins to dominate the atmosphere and that storm will weaken and move on out. we're going to see the heat move and the 90's are back, as you know as early as tomorrow. 69 tonight. tomorrow morning we'll start out nice and comfortable not quite as cool they say morning, we head up to the 2, a little bit of a breeze. which keeps the air on the drier side. we head to maybe near 90 in few spots and to give you

at 8:00 in the morning, 71 with the breeze being noticeable by noon, 86, by 4:00, 91. later this week, the heat gets more intense as high pressure builds off the coast and that starts pumping in more to have the bermuda high heat. check it out with the fox 5 seven-day forecast two days in the low 90's, more humid, uncomfortably by human by thursday. see a couple of thunderstorms there on wednesday and thursday, small chances. we do need the rain, there is not a lot of rain in the forecast. we got heat for you. that weekend looking like a good one to spend at the beaches, 95 on saturday. 96 -- 95 on friday, 96 on saturday and we're a little bit more reasonable sunday. and monday as we head back to the 80's. it is t minus seven days before washington kicks off the new nfl season >> i will start the

. redskins will be in the final moments of the 2016 season at home. we know the new faces, there's at least a familiar one whose status is up in the air, we're talking about matt jones, he suffered a left shoulder injury in the second preseason game against the jets back on august 19th. today, jones was in practice, he had the yellow noncontact jersey as he hopes to make his way back. team hasn't made an official announcement on whether he can play or not but jones says, hey, put me in, coach >> they gave me -- just to be, you know, cautious. next friday i'll be out here, i feel great about everything, about passing, blocking, giving the hit. i'm ready to be back out. just bringing him along. going to be interesting to see how he does.
