authorities in polk county are searching for the driver in a deadly hit-and-run crash. it happened just after midnight. a car veered off state road 60 in lake wales hitting a young woman in a polk county deputy. the woman was killed and a deputy remains in the hospital fox 13's kelly cowan has more. was safe and she had wrecked her car in this ditch. >> smashed, the windshield it landinged on its passenger side. she actually crawled out through the smashed wind scmeld came out into the median to flag somebody down for help. >> reporter: polk county deputy sheriff stopped to help. >> he immediately called for e.m.s. and the last transmission that he had was at 12:38. e.m.s. had not anticipated

thought they were arriving to assist that woman who was injured in the crash. instead when they got here they found her, and the deputy in the grass severely injured it. >> was quite obvious from the very beginning that they had been struck by a vehicle. >> reporter: detectives say a vehicle swerved around the deputy's vehicle and sped through the median running right over deputy and the woman. >> i think her injuries were so significant that it wasn't possible for her she died. the deputy survived with multiple broken bones. his injuries are serious and he'll need several surgeries. but deputies are hopeful he'll recover. they're also hopeful they'll find the person who hit him and killed the woman he was trying to help. >> the fact that they fled right after mowing down a deputy sheriff and an innocent woman we would plea for that person to turn

the headed west toward lake wales. scheer now scouring surveillance footage from businesses to see if they can identify the vehicle. they say it will have significant front end damage. in lake wales, kelly cowan, fox 13 news. >> earlier this month, a tip from a viewer helped the polk county sheriff's office find and arrest the driver in another deadly hit-and-run crash. today sheriff grady judd said in a statement we are confident that with the identify and arrest the cow ward who ran over a deputy and a young woman and left them both for dead. then fled the scene. we will work day and night until this case is solved and judd says to the coward who did this, we advise to you turn yourself in soonger rather than later. tampa police are investigating a deadly crash that happened in the channelside area overnight. so far police haven't released many details but we do know the crash happened in the area of east kennedy

drive, not far from port tampa bay. police closed traffic from fremont for about three hours for the investigation. we'll bring you updates as we learn more. new at 6:00 a clearwater man who was out on bond in the vehicular homicide of a crossing guard is back behind bars much to you may remember the death of crossing guard douglas kerry. kerry spent 27 years as a clearwater police officer. in may of 2014, authoritie killed kerry at his post at the intersection. authorities say johnson ran from the scene but was arrested nearby and charged with vehicular homicide. he was released on bond but fast forward to today, and johnson has been arrested again. deputies tried to stop his car friday night and had to use stop sticks when he tried to get away. when they caught him they say he was driving without a license and in possession of

tonight of authorities in miami on the death of jose fernandez. a toxicology report just released today reveals hernandez had both cocaine and alcohol in his system when his boat crashed into a miami beach jetty on september 25th. it's not clear whether fernandez was driving at the time. two of his friends were also on that boat and died. fernandez was drafted by the mlb after playing for alonzo high school in tampa where he lived with his after scaching cuba as a teenager. authorities have arrested a school bus driver they say took advantage of a student. it happened in pinellas county thursday morning around the time school was starting and deputies say social media may have made the situation worse. davis is a relief bus driver for pinellas schools. they say last week he handed a 16-year-old girl his facebook chat identification and they started communicated over social media. on thursday, they say he

to an undisclosed location where they had sex. the girl later told teachers at her school who contacted deputies. they arrested davis at his home last night. they say he admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with that girl. manatee county deputies are looking for a prisoner who escaped a female inmate named shannon holmes. she escaped from the department of corrections bridges of america prison facility. she had been at the facility since may 25th on burglary and drug charges. if y about where she is call the manatee county sheriff's office. tonight clear water police are searching for an attempted robbery suspect caught in this surveillance photo. police posted it on their facebook page friday. they say this man held up a wal-mart store on north highland just before 10:00 friday night. officials say he implied he had a gun before running away. if you can help track him down, call clear water

the country, including those in more than a dozen other states where similar lawsuits are already playing out. and thus, 17-year-old gavin grim has become the face of transgender students across the country. after the court acted he said in a statement "the only thing i ever asked for was the right to be treated like everyone else. the high school senior who was born female but eyeifies as a male sued the virginia school board for not allowing him to use the boys bathroom at his gir school. the district received complaints over grimm using the boys bathroom it and now requires students to use the rest room that corresponds with their bilogical gender. in a statement the chairman praised the supreme court for agreeing to hear the case. saying the board looks forward to explaining to the court that its restroom and locker room policy carefully balances interest the of all students and parents. the aclu which is

violation of federal law, specifically title nine which bars schools from discriminating on the basis of gender. the obama administration has made that same argument and instructed school districts across the cry to drop such policies. so while on its face this case is about trarn rights, the biggest question the court will answer is in this instance, does the federal government have the right to impose its discontrary policies on the states. on friday the said they will hear this case sometime next year. in washington, i'm garrett tenny, fox news. an alabama college student's act of kindness is really taking off at his university. justin franks attends alabama a aend e university in huntsville and lives on campus but unlike many of his college classmates he's decided to transform his dorm room into the headquarters of his donation-based food pantry.

the pantry is packed with items like truce juices, soups, canned food, chips and end noodles's. prank has posted his venture on facebook and the story has already been shared hundreds of times. >> i know that there are some students who said they were going to be hungry so i thought about it and thought what can i give back to my community. it makes me feel like i'm blessing someone i feel like i can bless a student and some student okay, man, i really appreciat t anything to eat. >> so far franks has helped nearly 100 students. those in need are able to get up to three items twice a week. the best part, he's already training someone else to make sure the food pantry can continue long after he's graduated. two boaters are safe today thanks to coast guard rescue crews. the men had to be saved when their boats started taking on water. rescuers got the call for help around 3:30 this
