later this morning, the old norfolk courthouse will be history. demolition crews will begin chomping away at the building that served the city for decades. city leaders says they're making room for a new civic plaza and justice system. rico bush is live in norfolk with more on what's happening today with the project. rico. don, katie, city leaders say demolishing the 50-year-old building marks a new beginning of the construction on civic plaza improvements that

for years. city council began the journey to build a new courthouse and civic plaza complex in 2-thousand-4. last summer, crews tore down the old general district courthouse to make room for the city's three courts including the juvenile and domestic relations court and a law library. the old circuit courthouse, which crews built in the 19-60s, will come down this morning to start phase two for the new court complex and civic plaza. renovations include raising the plaza to prevent flooding, making more public space and extending main street to create a new public drop off area. all of this comes with a the entire project is today people in the community will gather at camp pendleton in virginia beach

lost 15 years ago today. later this morning there will be a ceremony for 18 heroes of the 203rd red horse squadron and three florida army national guard aviators. you're looking at video from last year's wreath laying. the service members died in 2001 while returning from training when their plane crashed in a field in georgia. it was the worst peacetime aviation disaster in the history of the national guard. a follow-up now to that deadly marina fire in middlesex county monday. state police say the victims are 75-year- old francis blantz and 65-year-old julia blantz. the victims were living on their boat while their home was under rennovation. about 20 boats were destroyed. police are investigating the fire as arson. happening today - arguments over deflategate. the n-f-l is appealing a ruling that overturned new england patriots quarterback tom brady's suspension. the n-f-l suspended brady for four games after an investigation

outside the courthouse. new this morning, arrests in a brazen gun store smash and grab caught on camera. we learned that information overnight from our affiliate in houston. federal authorities arrested several people in the case, but believe more on still on the loose. take a look at the unbelievable video of about 10 people breaking into the store tuesday. you can see them wrap a chain around the barred doors and then

open. once they get inside they go on a free- for-all grabbing whatever they can. investigators say they got away with more than 50 guns. also new this morning, an officer in alabama faces a murder charge for shooting and killing an unarmed black man last month in montgomery. police say 23-year-old officer aaron smith thought 59-year-old gregory gunn was acting suspicious. there was a struggle between the two before officer smith shot and killed gunn. it turned out that gunn was carrying a long pole and not a firearm. smith's attorney believes the facts will prove the officer had just cause to shoot gunn. 1:13 - 1:23 mickey but mr. gunn chose for his life to end that night, and the facts will prove that." officer smith is currently on leave from the police department and is out on bond.

gun violence tore apart a family here in hampton roads, but chesapeake police are still no closer to finding out who did it. the family of levi frederick is desperate for answers. they want to know who shot him and another man in a drive-by shooting on river creek road last march. frederick's family and friends came together to remember him last night. his mother says there was one miracle in the past year - frederick's daughter was born after he died. she says her granddaughter pushes her to keep fighting to find frederick's killer. chanda frederick / mother his grandparents and i need justice for my grandbaby because this should not have happened." 14:11:47 chesapeake police say this is an open case, and they don't have any new details. if you have information that can help, call the crimeline at 1-888- lock-u-up. another cold case has investigators from charlotte, north carolina looking for answers in hampton roads. officers sent us these renderings of a woman

2011. they say she could be hispanic or white, between 20 or 30 years old. they think she might have a some type of connection to the area because she had a shirt with "virginia beach" printed on it. if you can help identify this woman -- call charlotte police. the parents of two virginia college students will never see their daughters again, but yesterday they did finally get a sense of justice. jesse matthew, junior pleaded guilty to murdering hannah graham and morgan harrington. matthew will spend the rest of his life behind bars. he received four consecutive life sentences, and waived his right to parole. 10 on your side was outside the albemarle county courthouse as the parents of the graham and harrington expressed relief at the plea agreement, and talked about the holes left in their lives. john graham - victim's father "his evil deprived the world of a man to be apprehended and convicted. she did change the world, but at a

a harvard university study found, just one drink can disrupt the heart's normal rhythm for one to three hours. that increases the risk of heart attack or stroke, but within 24 hours, moderate alcohol consumption improves blood flow and actually lowers these risks. on the other hand, researchers linked heavy drinking with higher heart attack and stroke risks at all times. coming up, it's demolition day in norfolk. rico bush has more on what's being torn down

50-year-old man in the thigh. paramedics took him to the hospital. he should recover. the victim told police he was outside, heard gunshots in the area, and then a bullet hit him in the leg. a few minutes later, another gunshot victim, a 34-year-old man, walked into riverside regional medical center. police say someone shot him several times in the chest and stomach. he's in critical condition this morning. police say the two shootings are related. call the crime line if you know anything. happening today, the trial is scheduled to start for the woman accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her employer. chesapeake police say mandi flowers worked for people's auction company until her bosses fired her in 2015. the owner says she changed the books to hide the thefts. flowers attorney told us, she's done nothing wrong. could this piece of debris be from the malaysia airlines plane that disappeared two years ago? an american adventurer says he found this in mozambique.

way to australia for analysis investigators told nbc news, the piece of metal could be from the doomed boeing 777. we'll keep you posted on the results. philadelphia police say 5 people died in a fiery crash last night. it happened between a car and a tractor- trailer. police say the car's driver crossed the grassy median and slammed head-on with the truck in the opposite direction. the impact was so violent, it split the car into two pieces. all five people who died were in that car. the truck driver has minor injuries. new information about that deadly crash involving an experiened ems chief. what the city is saying this morning. and what would it take to keep more tolls off our roads? 10 on your side went all the way to richmond to talk to our local lawmakers. find out what they told

now to a follow-up about tuesday's crash in virginia beach involving an e- m-s vehicle that killed a woman. police say the man driving was an experienced brigade chief named jeffrey brennaman. city officials say he was on-duty at the time, but he was not heading to an emergency. the wreck happened on lynnhaven parkway. 88-year-old doris baxter died. this morning, brennaman is on administrative duty while officers investigate. doctor ben carson has made his decision in
