shares from the heart. >> we don't want anybody to freeze. there is no reason for that, notot with us open here. carol: miracle hill's greenville rescue mission is providing shelter to keep the homeless out of the cold. it is the coldest day so far this season. chief meteorologist john cessarich is here. it is dangerously cold in the mountains, right? john: absolutely. the windchill advisory goes from now until noon tomorrow for the mountains. windchills could go as low as -20 late tonight. that would be the high elevations of the mountains and north carolina. mount mitchell, anything above 5000 feet. below zero, at least minus five, by tomorrow morning. the windchill advisory goes from now until 10:00 tuesday morning. let's look at some of the current windchills right now.

1 in hendersonville. in 5 in asheville. 17 in franklin. clemson, 16. bitterly cold temperatures be it when you wake up sunrise at 7:35, plenty of sunshine but very cold. 17 is what i am forecasting. chan and probably a few single digits in the mountains. dress up in layers. we will see a few storm systems come in. michael: this is the coldest weather so far this winter season. leaving people off the streets, sending them to emergency shelters. carol: wyff n is at the greenville rescue mission on a mission. john: right now, there are about 50 evil inside here at the greenville rescue mission. that is because outside here, it is 23 degrees. it feels like 15.

afternoon dragging 90 mattresses onto the gym floor of the greenville rescue mission, getting ready for tonight's expected crowd. >> we want to get them out of the cold. then a man does not have to lay on the ground and freeze to death. john: the mission could hold about 125, and they are expecting about 90 men. they provide a snack, drink, blanket, and matt. >> tonight would be a great time to check on people and bring them here to stay overnight. they will not have to worry about being cold all night. john: dalton says that unfortunately, some of the the cold and will not come in. want to talk on camera but told me he's spending tonight in a tent, warmed by a gas heater. >> it's rough, because you can

cold. once your core body temperature gets cold, then it's hard to get warm again. john: the rescue mission opens whenever the temperature gets below 40. no drugs or drinking allowed, and everybody has to behave in order to keep a spot indoors. and this overnight shelter is supposed to close at 6:30 in the morning, but i was told that it will not be much warmer than it is now, so it will be open a little bit longer. john lyon, wyff 4 news. carol: frozen pipes are also a worry in this cold. if you have a loss in water pressure or you hear on noises coming from the walls, your pipes may be frozen. chris corley, the owner of

michael: on your right, one notable exception you see it on your right the confederate flag. it's the first time the holiday has been commemorated at the dome in columbia without the flag on the grounds. carol: a woman whose mother was killed in the charleston church massacrereast summer, was in the upstate today. sharon risher was the featured speaker at a king day event at limestone college. risher's mother, ethel lance, was among the nine killed at mother emanuel church last june. today, risher condemned that shooting and others that, she says, are happening all too often. >> when we're in a place where shootings and killings with guns or by whatever means is a normal thing, something is wrong. when a person's life is not sacred, where the police shoot and ask questions later, for me, right now king's dreams are just , that. they're dreams. carol: risher encouraged limestone students to exercise

michael: at the greenville community sterling center, more than 100 members of the community can to eat breakfast to remember martin luther king, jr., and listen to eunice coakley guyton speak. coakley-guyton is the sister of one of the emanuel nine, reverend myra thompson. she also met doctor king as a freshman in college and he chose her to participate in a sit-in. the folks at sterling took the time to remember the emanuel ame church victims. and talk about love and non-violence principles king stood for. >> he spent time telling us and explaining to us what nonviolence was all about and based on what he taught us, i , knew it had to be true because that's what mother emanuel taught. michael: this was the 22nd year for the doctor martin luther king junior unity sports breakfast program. carol: the democratic presidential contenders spoke at king day at the dome in columbia. senator bernie sanders and governor martin o'malley marched to the capitol steps, while hillary clinton joined the program there. secretary clinton: and how

flag overhead. mr. sanders. -- mr. sanders going when we think about dr. king's vision, what dr. king said is we have got to combat racism but we have also got to combat income and wealth inequality. >> injustice does not solve itself. we must solve it. we must make good on the promise of equal opportunity for all. carol: last night, the candidates took to the debate three stage in charleston. michael: the legacy of doctor king brought furman university udents to the cancer survivor's park in greenville. as part of the mlk day of service, students in the greek system cleared away debris from the boardwalk and along the river. students say they wanted to spend the day helping others as dr. king asked people to do. >> he preaches be kind to others and come out together with brothers and sisters. and i think that shows the best with us coming together and just helping out our community and

help out. >> mlk day of service is important to me because despite our religious, cultural and other upbringings we can all , come together and set one common goal of making greenville better. michael: the cleanup comes in time for a grand opening of the park which provides cancer , survivors a place to reflect heal and hope. carol: the search continues for a marine from the upstate. 22-year-old sergeant jeffrey sempler, who is from woodruff, is one of 12 marines missing tonight. according to the military two helicopters collided off the coast of hawaii during a training exercise on thursday. authorities found life rafts today that were carried on the aircraft, but still no sign of the crew. a vigil for sempler was held in his hometown today. dozens gathered outside of woodruff city hall to pray. family members fear the worst. . -- fear the worst as they wait for answers. >> the worst thing is he's not going to have a future. all the things that he would have done in life, it's not

there is going to be a hole there. carol: jeffrey sempler graduated from woodruff high school 4 years ago. his grandfather says, his grandson loved his country and always wanted to be a marine. the coast guard and marines say they are working together to determine how much longer the search and rescue mission will go on. michael: the name of a man whose remains were found in a wooded area this weekend. 46-year-old gary burdens was announced missing in august. officials say a young man discovered the remains yesterday on his family's property on mcneely road. an anthropologist with the spartanburg county coroner's office assisted investigators with the case. carol: the first case of the zika virus has been detected in the u.s. a baby born in hawaii with brain damage was confirmed to have thehe virus. this following testing by a centers for disease control lab. it's believed the baby's mother was infected while living in brazil last year. on friday, the cdc issued a travel warning for 14 countries

that's where the zika virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes is most prevalent. , pregnant women and women trying to become pregnant are most at risk. so far there is no vaccine for , the virus. michael: tonight the fight , against isis continues as more airstrikes are going on in the middle east. this is new video frs defense ministry showing the bombings near baghdad last night. they're believed to have targeted isis troops, their hideouts, and their vehicles. officials say the air strikes killed several militants and destroyed a number of their vehicles. carol: iraqi officials are scrambling to find americans who three were reportedly kidnapped. an official says the americans were taken from their interpreter's house in baghdad over the weekend. officials say communication with the trio cut off yesterday. the u.s. embassy is only confirming several americans were missing. no group has claimed responsibility for their disappearance. michael: three of the americans five freed in a prisoner exchange with iran are in germany right now. they arrived at a u.s. military

and they are now spending time with family and friends. the coworkers who all came out to visit with them. it's been nearly five years since they've seen each other, and emotions are running high. >> he told us i feel a whole lot , better than i did 48 hours ago, which has to be the understatement of the weekend. >> he sounds in high spirits and indicated that he wants human contact and wants to see other people. michael: it could be days before the americans can return back to the u.s. carol: to ccmitment 2016 -- the republican national committee has officially cut ties with nbc news. the rnc won't allow the network to co-host a presidential primary debate scheduled for february. the chairman says its in response in the way cnbc handled its debate in october. the debate will now air on cnn on february 25. thursday, michael: a founding member of the eagles has died. the band's website says glenn frey passed away. he was 67.
