the their brine in the trucks ready to put on the roads. we will have more on how they are preparing coming up at 5:30. but first, here is a live look outside at spartanburg. it is cold. gabrielle: it is definitely called. that makes us grateful for the sunshine, which is helping just a little bit. but it is still called. john cessarich joins us in the studio. it is shaping up to be a busy week. john: to say the least. we have been talking about the active pattern this week. the one round of precipitation will come in tomorrow morning. light snow and flurries for the mountains of north airline ahead of the main system. this is not a major storm system. the bulk of the precipitation will be in the mountains tomorrow.at noon tomorrow, things pretty cold. this is the arctic air, very dense and dry.

here comes a band of light snow. the best chance of snow will be in the north carolina and georgia mountains. with sleet and rain outside the mountains. here are the watches and advisories come a western north carolina into north georgia. we will go through western north carolina, that does not include ongoing county. the advisory starts at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. 1-3 inches possible, hazel, murphy, you have the best chances of snow. the north georgia mountains, a couple inches of snow mixed with sleet, maybe 1/10 two one for the vintage possible of freezing rain, ice and sleet. a few scattered snow, sleet and rain showers in the upstate, a trace of accumulation in oconee and pickens county.

in the afternoon. mainly in the mountains of georgia and nomore about this in detail later on. gabrielle: thanks, john. to pickens county. the coroner there has been called to a house fire near the blue line auto tire store. wyff news 4's john lyon is near the scene of the fire right now, and john, what's the latest you can tell us? john: we are at -- a few blocks off main street in downtown pickens, where pickens did -- fire department says there has been a fatal house fire. let's go to some video that sky4 shot a short time ago. it shows the scene shortly after the fire started at 1:00 this afternoon. a witness driving by says she saw a small fire, then she heard a boom, then the fire totally engulfed this woodframe house. she said that flames were shooting out all of the windows. pickens fire department says

an hour to bring the fire under control. family members i spoke to a short time ago tell me that this house belongs to an woman. they say she did not make it out of the house. the coroner is here. the red cross is here. pickens fire investigators are here, and they are trying to find outt caused the fire. we are waiting to hear from the fire chief to give us more information about exactly what happened. as soon as he tells us, we will tell you. live in pickens, john lyon, wyff news 4. nigel: thanks, john. firefighters are expecting even more fires as the temperatures continue to dip. tonight, oconee county officials are sending out a warning. wyff news 4's mandy gaither has more. mandy: this home on forest drive burned early saturday morning.

but five other families who've had fires here in oconee county >> see where it melted, and fell off the wall? mandy: sheila lemon can still see the remains of her smoke detector. before it could even go off, her 16-year-old granddaughter woke up, smelled smoke, and got everyone out of the house safely. thankfully, no one was hurt in this fire. its cause, still under investigation. but most of the other five fires in oconee county the past week were started because someone was trying to heat a home. oconee county fire chief charlie king says, those fires have one thing in common. >> the disturbing thing about each one of those was, we found none of them had a working smoke detector. the small, inexpensive devices are proven life-savers, and we want to make sure every resident in oconee has one of those, where they go to bed, and where they work at. mandy: firefighters bought extra smoke detectors today, as several people have called asking for one after the recent fires.

county fire officials are doing next weekend to make sure people understand the importance of smoke detectors. mandy gaither, wyff oconee county. gabrielle: two former upstate police officers face charges, nine months after they were fired in connection with an excessive force complaint. the state law enforcement division charged former honea path police officers robert shaw and josh bell with misconduct in office. the sentence for a conviction on that charge is up to ten years in prison. sled's warrants say the men lied about the manner i iwhich they arrested brian hatcher in november of 2014, for failure to stop for a blue light. hatcher's family told wyff 4 that his nose was broken, and his jaw was shattered during the arrest. nigel: police say a man was found dead this morning in a cherokee county park. 82-year-old howard lee talley was found by police this morning at mccluney park. that's on granite drive. the coroner says talley appeared to have been there since late last night. officials believe he suffered a medical condition. they do not think the cold

death, and they do not suspect foul play. gabrielle: seven people were killed on south carolina roadways in just two days, and officials with the department of public safety say, most of them have one thing in common. according to a new report on the deaths, six out of the seven people killed were not wearing seat else. the report also says, so far this year, 22 people in cars have died on south carolina roadways. 14 of those people were not wearing seat belts. nigel: still no luck in hunt for 12 marines, following a chopper collision last week off the coast of hawaii. 22-year-old sergeant jeffrey sempler from woodruff is one of the missing marines. authorities say someone saw the aircraft flying, and then saw a fireball last thursday night. right now, the coast guard says three life rafts that were aboard the helicopters have been recovered. they say some of them were inflated. so far, there's no indication that anyone was aboard them. in georgia, lawmakers are proposing a new bill allowing

tasers, on college campuses in the state. college campuses in georgia are supposed to be gun-free zones, but some lawmakers have tried to allow college students to carry handguns. this new bill is seen by some as a compromise. so far, response to the proposal is mixed among students and legislators. >> i wouldn't carry a taser around. too intense. >> having a gun in your dorm, that's one thing. but if you have a taser on you, that's mainly a self-defense item. >> i think it's a bad compromise. the only people i think who should have tasers or guns on campus are police. nigel: legislation to allow college students to carry pistols on campus is still popular among some lawmakers. they're waiting for an opportunity to revive that bill later this legislative session. gabrielle: blue bell ice cream will soon be available again in the southeast. beginning this week, the products will be delivered to the states seen on this map, alabama, georgia, kentucky, tennessee, virginia, and the

the company's products were pulled from stores last year, after a listeria outbreak. the company had to lay off some employees, while furloughing others. nigel: have you heard? the panthers one. fans can get their hands on tickets for sunday costs -- sunday's nfc championship game, but they will cost you a pretty penny. according to ticketmaster, many tickets are being re-sold online for steep prices. officials say 220,000 people tried to buy tickets online sunday night when they went on sale, but only about 7,000 tickers were made available for purchase. we found tickets that are typically sold for $100, priced at more than $800. gabrielle: and it's time to "keep pounding," with the panthers live wire. it's a collection of the latest tweets about the panthers, and staff. you view the livewire by going

and go ahead and look in the "right now" bar. a woman from north carolina is a powerball winner. officials say kajal patel won $200,000 from the powerball. she collected her winnings this morning in raleigh. nigel: a ticket in taylor's won the top prize of the palmetto cash five in $100,000. the unknown winner bought the ticket from piedednt petro corner mart, on locust hill road. the winner has 180 days from the date of the drawing to take home the money. gabrielle: now to a movement to encourage people in greenville to use solar power. the upstate solar tour was announced in greenville. people are invited to biz -- visit places where solar power are already used. officials with smartpower and solarize south carolina say, solar power is affordable and accessible. >> when solar is installed, you can offset your energy use in your home with the energy that

by cnbc back in october. the party was critical of how the debate in boulder, colorado, was handled, saying the moderators took a mean-spirited tone, and asked "gotcha" questions. next month's debate will be the last before super tuesday on march 1st, when voters in 14 states will head to the polls and caucuses. gabrielle: happening now, republican presidential candidate ben carson has temporarily suspended his campaign. this, after a car crash in iowa involving his staffers. three campaign volunteers and one employee were in a van when it hit a patch of ice. it flipped on its side, and was hit by another vehicle. >> we're going to suspend our activities, and i'm going to head up to omaha, where they're being flown in right now. and i've talked to the nurse surgeon up there, and i've talked to the family. i think that's where we need to be right now. gabrielle: one campaign worker

carson cancelled his events for today and tomorrow. at home in anderson county, officials tested of the voting machines, making sure they will work before the presidential primary. if you plan to vote in the democratic or republican primary , make sure you are registered at least one month in advance. tomorrow is the last day to register for the republican primary, which is on february 20. the democratic primary is on february 27, so you must be registered by january 27. had to wyff4.com for a link to check your status or register online. nigel: controversy over the academy awards and diversity attention. gabrielle: at least two major industry figures are saying the question now, is whether others will join them. mark barger reports. mark: when hollywood's biggest names gather to celebrate next month's academy awards, actress jada pinkett smith and director spike lee will be boycotting instead, protesting

north caroli that are under a winter starting at 7:00 tomorrow morning. it will end by tomorrow evening. overnight tomorrow into thursday morning, you have seen the snow and the sleep. some of the roads, it will start to melt away, and it will re-freeze. we could be looking at black ice early thursday morning in the mountains. in northeastern georgia, raven county and -- raybun and have are some counties, -- and haversham counties, a dusting possible. 7:00 a.m., winter storm warning until the morning on thursday, you may see snow, sleet, and freezing rain. north georgia mountains, it's not like up north where a winter storm warning may mean six plus inches of snow.

tomorrow morning, here is the storm system. it is a weak system. a batch of snow to the north. this is tomorrow morning. the arctic cold is locked in. the models push the arctic air up quickly, but it is heavy and dense so it takes a while to get rid of it. we will seek evaporational cooling. it fades away during the afternoon hours, then dies out tomorrow night into thursday morning. here comes the next storm system, a much stronger system will cap moisture out of the gulf of mexico. rain across the area or stay afternoon. cloudiness returns -- rain across the area thursday afternoon. tomorrow, a few low afternoon snow showers and sleet showers and rain showers possible, 40% chhigh 40. when the precipitation begins, the temperature will drop quickly because the air dry. light snow in the mountains may

carol: you may be able to catch up on sleep after all. if you sleep in a bit on your problems associated with sleep loss. a small study of healthy young men showed just four nights of sleep restriction decreased their insulin sensitivity, and increased their risk of diabetes by 16%. but after two nights of extended sleep, their levels returned to normal. more research is going to be needed to confirm the results. it looks like more intensive treatments are needed for patients with early parkinson's disease. occupational and physical therapy, along with medication, is commonly used. but a study of nearly 800 patients found these therapies did not improve deaily tasks, -- daily tasks, like getting dressed or brushing teeth. any kind of exercise helps lower your risk of heart disease. that's the bottom line in some new research, and it contradicts earlier work that found too much aerobic exercise could be as harmful to the heart as not exercising at all. but scientists at the american college of cardiology sports say
