be one of the hot topics. in washington, sally kidd, wyff news 4. gabrielle: thanks, sally. a huge number of ballots were cast in saturday's republican primary, many more than in 2012. wyff news 4's tim waller has been crunching the numbers, and is here with that story. tim? tim: gabby, if voter turnout during presidential primaries tends has been historically low in the past, that was not the case on saturday. check this out. 25% of all registered voters in the state cast a ballot on saturday for one of the six gop contenders. compare that to a 22% turnout in 2012, when voters had nine republican candidates to choose from. and look at these increases in voter turnout at the county level, compared to 2012. voters in union and cherokee counties cast 29% more ballots this past saturday, than they did in the gop primary in 2012. pickens, laurens, and anderson counties, also casting more ballots. same story in these five counties. abbeville, spartanburg, greenwood, oconee, and

increases in voter turnout compared to the 2012 primary. pickens and oconee counties had the largest percentages of voter turnout in the state this past saturday. a 36% turnout in pickens county, and a 33% turnout in oconee county, compared to the statewide average of 25%. south carolina will hold its democratic primary this coming saturday. but as of now, the turnout we saw for the gop primary two days ago was even greater than the record-setting turnout by democrats in 2008, who were eager to see president obama elected. nigel? nigel: thanks, tim. elections officials across the upstate say there are some things to learn from problems voters had during the gop primary. wyff news 4's myra ruiz has more on the advice they are offering. myra: we spoke to the spartanburg county voter registration and elections director, who says if you meet the qualifications to vote early because you can't be at the polls saturday,

are serving active duty, but she just got there too late. myra: elections officials says -- recommend that voters log onto scvotes.org to make sure they know where to vote, and figure out ahead of time how long it'll take to get there. myra ruiz, wyff news 4. gabrielle: taking a look at other headlines investigators in , pickens county need your help finding whoever shot and killed a woman. they say fishermen found a woman's body on a boat ramp yesterday morning, off bucksin road in easley. wyff news 4's aly myles reports from the scene. aly: officials identified a body found here as 35-year-old reza khan. she was found sunday morning when two fishermen called authorities, telling them a woman was badly injured and wasn't responding. neighbors right next to this dock told us they didn't hear gunshots between saturday night and monday morning. -- and sunday morning. investigators are trying to figure out who khan was with saturday night. james rice lived near the dock for years. >> a lot of families know each other. everyone kind of knows

everybody's real attentive. aly: he says violence like this doesn't happen around here. >> i lived here 5 years, and you never heard of anything going on down here. people might throw a wild party or something, but you've never heard of no killings, or no beatings, or anything like that. aly: so far, no weapon has been found, and no arrest have been made. investigators are asking anyone with any information to call crimestoppers. aly myles, wyff news 4, at saluda lake. nigel: now to oconee county, where an out-of-state organization is fighting to get a memorial taken down from a city building. wyff news 4's mandy gaither has more from seneca. mandy: a cross was placed at seneca's water treatment plant to honor the life of chuck keeler, and we were with his daughter when she saw this memorial for the first time. it blends in with the stone wall, so much that ashley cantrell almost missed it. when she finally saw the memorial to her father, words were hard to come by.

emotions back from that day. mandy: it was november 19th, 2014. chuck keeler was helping to build seneca's water treatment plant, when he fell. this cross, a way to honor him, along a patio near the building. a resident complained to the freedom from religion foundation. the wisconsion organization has now sent a letter to seneca city officials, asking that the cross be taken down. >> it makes me a little angry, that they're trying to take that away. it's only been a year and three months since we lost him, and for them to come in and try to take the cross away, it's just so disrespectful to my dad. mandy: the organization says it doesn't have a problem with memorializing keeler, but by phone, told us a cross shouldn't be here. >> if it's on government

nigel: this just in to the newsroom. an upstate judge has ruled against a north carolina company that wants to dump coal ash in the community. the company that wants to build the landfill, mrr, is suing pickens county for $25 million, saying the county cannot prevent it from using the class 2 landfill for coal ash. last week, judge robin stillwell heard a motion filed by mrr that planned to stop pickens county from delaying the plans. this afternoon, according to court doccuments, the judge denied the motion, and ruled that mrr could not dump any coal ash while the case goes forward. pickens county officials say the landfill is for construction debris only. gabrielle: a substitute teacher is accused of stealing prescription drugs from the nurse's office. this is exclusive video of morgan ashley kidd being booked into the anderson county detention center, after turning herself in to iva police. anderson district 3 officials say a nurse at crescent high school noticed the missing

school resource officer. the district assistant superintendent says steps have been taken to make sure this doesn't happen again, including taking a look at security at the school. an upstate man is facing criminal charges after a child said the man put cocaine on his tongue, and made him watch "dirty movies." this is according to woodruff police. 30-year-old david jordan faces multiple charges, including unlawful neglect of a child. according to the incident report, the child told officers that his tongue went numb. another child said jordan and others smoked marijuana in front of him and his brother. the department of social services was contacted, and the children were put in the care of a family friend. nigel: an uber driver accused of going on a killing spree in michigan saturday night, makes his first appearance in court. gabrielle: prosecutors say they think they know what happened, but they're still trying to figure out why. nbc's chris pollone has the story.

a husband and father of two, and an uber driver, now charged with six counts of murder, plus two counts of assault with intent to murder, along with weapons charges. >> the defendant did murder mary lou nye. chris: dalton remained in jail as the judge talked to him. prosecutors in kalamazoo, that killing spree over about six hours saturday night, all while continuing to give rides to unsuspecting passengers. but as of now, they still don't know why it happened, and what, if anything, ties the victims together. >> this was not just a momentary lapse. this was not just a crime. there was not something to provoke this. there are videotapes of these incidents. he walked up on these people, and shot them. chris: in all, eight people were shot in three separate locations, a woman at an apartment complex, a father and son at a car dealership, and five people in a restaurant parking lot. among the dead there, bart nye's mother and aunt, best friends
