they have been running between lafayette and orinda. if you live in walnut creek, you're trying to get into san francisco and b.a.r.t. is your normal way of getting in, it is up and running and it's a normal tuesday morning right after new year's eve. this is after b.a.r.t. spent yesterday and overnight trying to repair the tracks, which they successfully were able to do. they had to use a crane to get the two derailed cars on the rails, back on the rails so they could be towed out of service. those two cars were on an eastbound yellow train along highway 24. this happened a little after 9:00 yesterday morning. at least one of the car's undercarriage also caught fire. all of the passengers and employees were able to get off safely. they were escorted on foot back here to orinda b.a.r.t. behind me. nine riders were taken to the hospital to be evaluated and in some cases treated for minor injuries. >> bob, at this point do we know why the train derailed? >> reporter: we just spoke with jim allison and we'll have some sound with him in abo

in orinda, pete suratos nbc bay area news. new at 11. it's official the santa clara county school board has appointed an interim superintendent during a closed session tonight. the board named charles hinman as the interim superintendent. he's replacing this woman, mary ann dewane, who was removed without cause. two weeks ago. the board has yet to give a reason for her firing, but the move does come a few months after our nbc bay area investigation. we first investigated complaints that the office of education misused some federal head start funds while dewane was in charge. today, a judge denied dugan's request to get her job back, stating that the board had the authority to terminate her. they want him to resign. that's the call from san jose's mayor and the city council to councilman omar torres. torres is facing a sexual misconduct investigation. mayor matt mahan saying today while torres hasn't been charged, the councilman has lost the faith of his colleagues and his constituents to do the job. here's nbc bay area's audrey asistio.

police, sheriff's department, and of course orinda police out here. there is an active search happening right now. as i walked up, i could hear a drone, a voice from a drone overhead, saying "come out with your hands up, you're surrounded, come out or you risk being bitten by a canine." there is a canine team on the ground actively searching for a third suspect. we understand that two people are in custody. this happened a couple of hours ago. i was able to chat with both the orinda mayor and with the city manager on the way over here. the city manager says this was a residential burglary. it was an issue reported as a home invasion that police interrupted this morning. as far as he knows, there have been no injuries, so that is great news. but a nearby elementary school has been placed on lockdown, and in an abundance of caution, as the city manager says, this to be sure, make sure that everybody stays safe as the search continues for this third suspect. i am looking at officers in the yard of a house here. it looks like they are dusting for prints,

power out in places like orinda.a they'll get those inspections, power will be turned back on by today, tonight at the latest. but until then thousands of people are still without power here in the bay area. pg&e had shut off power sunday night to thousands of customers, the majority in contra costa, alameda, napa counties to prevent wildfires during the high wind event which pg&e reports saw maximum gusts in the high 60s to high 80-mile-an-hour range. stoplights are still out. businesses remain closed. gas pumps are shut down. last night people were buying ice to try to save their perishables that are in their fridge. pg&e has set up charging stations like this one to help people get through this major inconvenience. >> i have a generator that's broken. and i don't have anybody to fix it. if we had the generator we would have been golden. >> reporter: here's a look at the pg&e website which shows the current power outages for the bay area. statewide 345,000 people lost power, less than half have been restored. again
