starring bob weir. he left california for life on a ranch. weir has gone back to those times for his album "blue mountain." you'll see him perform at the king's theater in a moment but, first, here is anthony mason's conversation with him. >> reporter: bob weir's new album of cowboy songs is his first solo record of original material in 30 years. but the roots of his new music go back even further, before his time as a founding member of the grateful dead to the early 1960s when weir had a teenage dream of finding a home on the range. >> i thought it would be a terribly romantic thing to do to run away and be a cowboy and which di. >> reporter: you were 15 ? >> i found my way to wyoming and living on a ranch out there and living in a bunk house. i was the kid on the ranch so i got to shovel a lot of stalls. >> reporter: the nights, he says, were long and quiet. >> there wasn't -- wasn't much to do but tell stories and sing songs. and that is what we did. i was the kid with the guitar. >> reporter: that i

composer at stanford university had never paid much attention to the grateful dead before meeting bob weirr, he is now as dedicated to the music as any dead head. >> the music of the grateful dead, there's so much material that somehow once you get into it, when you get deeper into that understanding how they work musically, counterpoint, harmony, rhythm, i found it translated into the orchestra in a very natural way. it feels like it's faster than usual. might be too much coffee for me. >> we can slow it down. i have nothing against that. >> reporter: aquilanti studied the improv that was part of every grateful dead show. he saw the influence of weir's partner jerry garcia. >> the grateful dead, he sang his songs. you now sing his songs. >> i can't sing them his way. i'm not going to try. those songs need to live. they need to live and breathe and grow. a song is a living critter. if i may wax, the characters in the songs are real. they live in some other world. they come and visit us through the musicians, the artists who have dedicated their lives to being that medium and inviting those
