every goldstar family today, we pay tribune to the heroes you knew and loved.grieve and mourn by your side and we honor the immortal sacrifice of 241 heroes who gave their lives for our freedom. thank you for being here. 1983 roughly 1800 marines were in beirut to keep the peace in a nation torn apart by civil war. terrorists had bombed the u.s. embassy earlier that year killing 63 people including 17 americans. marines stationed at the beirut airport, the morning of october 23 arrived like any other. the marines stood there at their posts. others slept peacefully in their bunks. until suddenly, and without warning, the truck driven by a terrorist crashed through the fences and barricades and into the lobby of the marine barracks. terroristm., the detonated the equivalent of 1000 of explosives killing three american soldiers, 18 american sailors, and 220 u.s. marines. it was a horrible moment. minutes later, another truck bomb took the lives of 58 french. troopers. paratroopers. it was the worst day since iwo jima. the attack was carried out by has the law whic

goldstar families. that left in the convention over the summer. i just thought the selfless devotion that brings a man and woman to die on the battlefields, i thought that might be sacred. when i listen to this woman, what she was saying, what she was doing on tv, the only thing i could do to collect my thoughts was to go and walk among the finest men and women on this earth. you can always find them in arlington national cemetery. i went there for an hour and a half, walked among the stones, some of whom i put there because they were doing what i told them to do when they were killed. i will end with this. 2015, i was still on active duty, i went to the dedication of the new fbi office in miami. it was dedicated to two men who were killed in a firefight in miami against drug traffickers in 1986. duke. and grogan almost retired. duke was less than a year on the job. they got in a gunfight and they were killed. three other fbi agents were there. they were wounded. they are now retired. jim comey gave a brilliant memorial speech to those fallen men,

to every goldstar family, we will stand by your side forever, it is very fitting that the veterans' dayarade begins right here in new york city. since the earliest days of our nation, new york has exemplified the american spirit and has been at the heart of our nation's story of daring and defiance. on july 2, 1776, the british armada sailed into new york harbor numbering more than 400 ships and carrying more than 30,000 men. the british came here to snub out what they thought was just a minor american revolution. didn't turn out to be that way. but the redcoats did know, what they did know was they were going to have a problem, but they didn't know that new york would meet them with the fearsome power of american patriots. in world war i, new york, regiments like harlem, hellfighters, the lost battalion and the fighting 69th were revered all over the globe. during world war ii, 63 million tons of supplies and more than 3 -- than three million service members shipped out of new york harbor. on september 11, 2001, the whole world saw the horror, and responded to america's wicked enemies
