bees. silicon valley is taking side and arming the bees. this week on "press here." good morning. i'm scott mcgrew. 2020 has been pretty tough so far. if there's anything that kind of went a little right, it's that the murder hornets never showed difficult. even bees deal with coronavirus, they do have to deal with sudden colony collapse. ironically, they have to deal with hornets. this is video of hornets kidnapping bees. it's fascinating video recorded by a palo alto company called bee hero which has developed sensors to watch for incoming hornets. they have made radar for bees. now for the record, these are asian giant hornets, not murder hornets. but i don't think the poor bee cares one way or another. we'll show you more video later. i promise. we'll get to the ceo and cofounder of bee hero. a man forever stuck happily on the bee team. i have so many questions. let's go with the fact that bees are very important to farms. farmers actually bring bees in to the farms and the bee keepers

the bees, you have to find them first. and that's where the bumble bee atlas comes in. it's a community science project that gathers data needed to track and conserve wild bumble bees, the so called atlas was started by a biologist with the nonprofit the xerces society for invertebrate conservation. and here's how it works. volunteers spread out all over the country armed with a net vials and an identification guide. they catch a bee, turn it over to scientists who then categorize them and keep a record. north america has about 50 different bumble bee species, but about a quarter of the population is at risk of extinction. and we need the bees. they're important pollinators of wild flowering plants and crops. the atlas project has had some success this year. washington state department of fish and wildlife has announced a plan to help conserve eight at risk species in the state. there are atlas projects in about a dozen states nevada, utah, colorado, wyoming and iowa start theirs in the spring. so go ahead and grab a group and a guide and start collecting. that's it for
