and he said, i'm here to investigate the murder of lisa jennings. talking about, murder? it was in the paper, you know. it was ruled a suicide. and he said, no, he killed her. keith morrison: but that wasn't all. --questions and he goes, what did jennings say to you about his wife having an affair? i said, he never said a word to me about his wife having an affair. why? was she? and he said, yes, and we can prove it. i said, well, that explains a lot. he said, you mean why he killed her? and i said, no. i said, why she did this. i said, maybe everything caught up with her, you know? keith morrison: meaning, thought dale, something about the affair pushed her over the edge. then dale offered the sergeant a little family history. dale potter: i said, you do know, don't you, that her dad killed himself? and he goes, you're full of crap. he said, her dad's alive, and he lives at windyville. i said, no, you're full of crap. her step-dad lives at windyville. her real dad killed himself out in kansas years ago. keith morrison: another family suicide? an af

>> yeah, someone came in while he was in the shower and shot lisa and got away before he could catch e'll figure it out. >> lisa's father, todd, thought he had it figured out and already had a suspect. >> go get him, go get him, now. >> todd's rage was directed at the neighbor on the other side of the fence. a 56-year-old army veteran, named tate. >> i thought they better get to him before i do. >> reporter: ryan tate was embroiled in an escalating feud with his neighbors. todd knew about it and was certain his daughter was dead because of it. the culmination of bad blood? >> right. >> reporter: started about two months before the murder. seth pulled a dead deer off the property line. ryan tate later tossed the hide on to seth's property. seth tossed it back and the war was on. todd caldwell responded to one in april and tate pointed the finger at his young neighbor. >> i can't remember their names. >> seth techel. >> techel? >> yeah. >> they're good people. they really are. >> this guy, brian tate, does he know you're the father in law of the neighbor? >> no, and i don't want to tell

he said, he called out for lisa, but she didn't answer. stairs told him she was working out. 10 to 15 minutes went by, he said, before he actually headed downstairs to discover her. >> what kind of. >> bar was it? >> the bench press? >> weightlifting bar. >> weightlifting bar. >> so bench. he said, he lifted the bar off lisa's neck, felt for a pulse, then tried giving her cpr on the bench. as he was backing out, he told the detective he called 911. as he was backing out, he told the detective he called 911. he said, when he saw the ambulance, he rolled down his window and pulled over to the curb. maybe that's what happened? at that time, yes. we didn't know. dennis murphy: but there was something about the way scott had acted that wasn't passing the detective's smell test. he's turning down 911 help. it had a red flag to me. yes, it did. some things make your nose twitch? yes. dennis murphy: then scott was asked about the state of his marriage. they'd been married for 13 years, scott said, but just a few months ago, they'd filed for divorce
