amy: your response, iona? >> well, i mean, of course the main concern of america, really, is the counterterrorism issue. and certainly, the only way out of a gymnastic we in yemen is negotiations -- domestically in yemen is negotiations. it looks like there's going to be more conflict and war. really, the international community has very little now influence in the outcome of that. the americans, along with other western embassies, all left earlier this year, let their embassies in sanaa. jamal benomar is the front and trying to arrange these talks. and yet the regional powers who also have an interest. the american focus is always in yemen, primary, one of counterterrorism and that is sort of model for the washington now has all been raised. amy: let's talk about the regional interests. he of saudi arabia and also iran. what role are they playing? >> well, the houthis have said there supported by iran and certainly, the rhetoric of a recent months from tehran has adjusted and made very clear they do support t

amy: at this point, iona craig what do you feel needs to happen?e have president obama famously recently saying yemen is the one major success story in the war against terrorism. what do you think as you listen and i'm sure you know well farea al-muslimi, on the ground in sanaa under the bombardment saying, what our country needs is investment in the economy education, not more bombs? >> certainly, most immediately is some sort of political settlement to get out of this current crisis. but by pushing the houthis this far, by deciding to bomb yemen i don't think -- the indication from the houthis at the moment they are not prepared to back down, which means more bombing and the possibility of even ground troops. the houthis have been fighting in yemen for over 10 years now. i think the real risk is if ground troops are involved, that this could be a very protracted and long conflict, which is going to impact yemenis massively. what farea al-muslimi was saying is depressing, but absolutely true. the economy has all but collapsed. the government -- th

iona craig, welcome to democracy now! talk about what has taken place. >> i think what we have seen in the last few days is pretty unprecedented in terms of yemen. i think what is happening now with hadi henning and the resignation, the prime minister and the, is really probably the smartest thing they could of done. it were backed into the corner by the houthis. they obviously or had not taken them on militarily and a fight they were unlikely able to win. this is the only way for them to turn around the houthis and say no, this is enough. now we have the prospect of an emergency meeting in the parliament on sunday when hadi's resignation will be put forward. they have the option to reject the resignation, which means hadi would still be president after that unless he then hands his resignation and again within three months. it may actually be hadi stays and manages to survive all of this. >> iona, given the constant turbulence within the country, what is the impact on some of the regional powers? obvious the, iran and th

[indiscernible] >> iona craig, can you tell us what is the complaint of these protesters? is this film that supposedly was made in california, is this the root of these protests? >> of the people have spoken to -- all of the people i've spoken to and the chanting going on is related to this town. saying it is blasphemy. they're calling for the death of the filmmaker. they said they would not leave until the americans left. they want to see the u.s. embassy closed as a result of this. i have to say, i did not see anyone who had actually seen the film posted on youtube, but have heard about it. [indiscernible] >> there was a drone attack supposedly that killed the no. 2 and al qaeda.di a yemeni man took credit for this attack. it is not clear exactly what happened. was the issue of the drone attack raised as well? >> all of the people i asked, there is no relationship between that. nobody mentioned the issue of drones or the killing of the no. 2 man. or even an attack to ago that killed 13 civilians. all of the people i've spoken to, it is related to this town. film. can you explain when you went to el paso, your visit with both emilio and oscar, then with iona: officials.c.e. officials. bill: sure. thank you for having me. to el paso, and we got to see emilio and oscar. i was accompanied by congressman beto o'rourke. it was an emotional meeting with emilio in particular. he was agitated. he broke down a couple of times. he complained of health problems , which you discussed earlier, and we think, by the way, the diet might continue to high blood pressure. he said his arm was numb, he was not sleeping well, and i'm not a dr., but he seems to be having pts and those kinds of symptoms. he was depressed. the authorities did not let us see emilio and oscar at the same time. emilio had to exit the room and oscar entered. oscar seems healthy. he is very concerned about his father, of course, but in many ways he presents like any early -college aged kid you would meet. a great kid. it was an honor to see them, but it was upsetting to see them under those circumstances. then we filed for a meeting with officials, as you indicated. amy: talk about how that meet

there is in some very brave journalist like iona craig and probably the worst hit place in yemen, realcatastrophe, reports of people dying of starvation and there is really any media coverage. we were allowed on this one yemen air flight, there has to be more pressure to allow journalists in. justin give you an idea of how much control to have over the airspace, yemenis flying into yemen from the outside, the planes, before the was a direct flight from cairo to sanaa and now it stops in saudi arabia. all of the bags are taken off and checked and saudi arabia security officials come onto the plane and checked the passports. when i was there, when yemeni with me was humiliated that this was happening -- one yemeni with me was really humiliated this was happening. more importantly, probably humanitarian aid and the fuel and the siege must really be lifted is what many yemenis are calling for. amy: the response of the people you interview, the hospital personnel and directors, the survivors of loved ones who are dying in drone strikes -- the response to having international reporter there?
