hoda abdel hamid is in ramallah. what is the situation at the moment?porter: well, things have slowed down now just because it's dark has settled in, but i have to say that throughout the day, we have been witnessing quite intense clashes and no matter how much the israeli army tried to push back to protesters, well, they bureaucrat determined to stand their ground, and so they did. they actually throughout the afternoon spread even further. a certain point past the israeli army's position here in ramallah on the north edge of the town. and then there were also similar clashes, all over the occupied west wank in hebron, where one person died, but he did not die of a protest, he -- according to israeli army, he was trying to stab a israeli citizen, and then there were also clashes in nablous, bethlehem and jerricho. so a very tense situation all across the west bank and in gaza where six protesters died during clashes there. there is a fence that separates gaza from southern israel. the protesters had gone all the way to that fence in solidarity of what

one of the people we honor today is sara hoda. hoda was a teacher, 30 years old from walnut creek. at urban montessori school where hoda taught. >> that's right. grief counselors are here at this montessori school. parents we talked to said they feel pretty lucky to have their kids go to this school because it works on a lottery system. so they're selected. and they felt even more fortunate to have sara hoda as one of the teachers here. when you're 6 years old it's not easy understanding the loss of life. monday morning this class learned their beloved teacher died in the oakland ghost ship warehouse fire. >> any time we lose a community member we feel it. and in a case as tragic as this one, for sure it hits deeper. >> yeah, it's definitely hard. you know, we're here to support our students, creating spaces for them to be able to talk with their teachers and shash their feelings. >> reporter: heart-shaped cards is today's classroom project. each one a special tribute for sara hoda. she worked in this room as a support teacher. friends say hoda was compassionate, loved gardening an

hoda abdel hamid is live ramallah. what is the latest there, hoda?porter: well, the confrontation has been going on for hours now. actually as you said, ever since the funeral of that young palestinian who actually died six days ago. just behind me, if the camera can zoom in, you can see there is a standoff going on. in the background, israeli forces dressed in dark suits and in the forefront are several palestinian youth. in that has been going on for a while. the bulk of the youth, however are on this side. and so we have been witnessing throughout the day this wave going back and forth, israeli forces approaching palestinian youth, palestinian youth retreating, then palestinian youth pushing forward, israeli forces also retreating. we have also seen them close in on the palestinian from 2 roads, the road down here, and then the road up there. israel forces have been using live ammunition, we have heard that throughout the day, and we have heard the pops of what seemed like rubber-coated steel bullets that are often used, and a lot of tear gas, but

hoda abdel-hamid joins us live in the occupied west bank. are we expecting the frustrations of the palestinian youth to rise up again today? >> it is rising up. it's basically the northern part of ramallah, further down there is an israeli settlement. what we have been witnessing is the palestinian youth have gone town the road where they clash with the israeli army, all of a sudden the israeli army pushed everyone back. i don't know if you see them. see the empty plot of land below the row of young men watching. this is where yesterday the bulk of the palestinian protesters were based and were throwing rocks out of. now it's empty and the israeli soldiers took position there. and they have gone all the way to the intersection of the road. the youth dispersed between the buildings there and on the side road, and it seems on what we have been witnessing for the past half hour, that the israelis are taking positions and are making sure there's a huge distance between them and the palestinian protesters. they have been firing volleys of tear ga

let's go live to hoda abdel-hamid. what are you seeing there? >> i have to say, if, indeed, the anti-terror operation has started, so far it's a discrete one. we are in the city center. the building - the police building that has been taken over by the pro-rush protesters, 300m down the road to my right. we went there, had a little look. you don't see armed men on the streets. you have this usual barricade of rubber tyres blocking access to the building. that barricade is manned by some men wearing minor helmets or biker helmets, they are holding shoes. in front of them is a group of people presumably some of their supporters. that group of people is not more than between 500 to 1,000 people. i have to say, if the government has issued that warning to the resident of the city center to leave the city center, where no one has heeded that call, you see people on the street. families and some shops are open. we also have seen a lot of people go to church. what i have seen of government presence so far is a fortified checkpoint on the road, just at

what do you understand they meant hoda?porter: i think they meant there are already 12,000 people that are stranded here in greece who want to continue their journey, hundreds more arrive on a daily basis, and as you said, people are stranded behind me because the border with macedonia is closed and there's no real indication on when it will open again. macedonia has said it has closed its border, because the transit camps are at full capacity, and serbia is not allowing anyone in. and while the european union is trying to find a unified position on how to deal with this crisis, serbia has just announced that the president has also arrived, sending military forces to the border here between greece and macedonia, to fortify that border. i have to tell you that there is already austrians, hungarian, that with working to make sure people don't go through the border. people are all worried because many don't want to stay in greece. many want to continue their journey, and greece also cannot really afford to have all of these pe

hoda abdel hamid is on the greek side of the border and joins us now live.you are, of course, is where the bottleneck is. explain to us how you have seen what is now effectively a refugee camp there grow. >> reporter: well, actually i have been here for about two weeks, and when i first arrived here, there were a thousand people who were in the official transit camp and that was it. you wouldn't see one of these colored tents. and what is difficult to understand is how the situation lead to this. the latest estimate we got is there are between 11 to 12,000 people who are stranded here in this now makeshift camp. the transition camp can't take anyone else. and aid organizations are having a real nightmare to try to organize all of this. the crossing is more shut than open. just to give you an indication, over the last 24 hours, about 320 have arrived -- have left, sorry, managed to go through. you probably have that same amount of people who arrived near this camp over a span of two hours. >> hoda, of course we know that most of this comes from the violence i

let's go to hoda abdel-hamid right now. let's go, instead to nick spicer, reporting from kiev. >> reporter: there's a high turn out here at this polling station in kiev as there is in polling stations across the capital. lines going outside, voters here see the election as a chance to stablilize the country after almost six months of unrest beginning with street protests, once the government decided not to join an association agreement in europe, leading to the fleeing of the president, the annexation of crimea, tension with russia, unrest in the east. these are all changes that the president will have to face. and polls suggest that the new president will be petero poroshenko, a billionaire chocolatier, serving as economy and foreign minister. he said he wants to stablilize the economy and provide jobs and get closer to europe. >> let's go to hoda abdel-hamid, who is live in the north-west of donetsk. what is the turn out so far in that area, given the threat of violence by pro-russian groups? >> reporter: well, we don't h

hoda abdel hamid joins us now live from ramallah. what is the situation now at the moment?till tense? >> reporter: well, certainly the standoff is still ongoing even though because of the darkness, some of the palestinian protesters have pulled back, but -- i don't know if you can see on camera, the light -- the fire all around, as dark settled in, some of the palestinian protesters used petrol bombs. the israeli soldiers, you can't see them probably, but they are not very far from there. they have pulled forward, much closer to the protesters. earlier i have to tell you, this whole area was spread out with protesters and israeli soldiers. now similar scenes have been seen throughout the west bank, and as you said, one protester died of his wounds in hebron, and there were also clashes in jerricho, and bethlehem. >> what is behind these clashings? >> certainly a lot of frustration and anger, suspicion of what are the motives of israel around -- regarding the al aqsa compound mosque, but also when you speak to these youth, they tell us, you know, we have been hearing about t

they targeted the building with homemade bombs more on hoda form until neighboring tunisia. what's the significance of this? >> reporter: the most significant part of this is really to create the sense of insecurity even in tripoli. now, we know that benghazi, there is lawlessness and it has been there awhile. tripoli has been more or less stable. so probably the main point is that bearing in mind that the residents of the ambassador had been an empty building since 2012 and that the bombs were not really very big. the detonation did cause minor damage but nothing significant. there were no casualties. i think it's come at a time when everybody is asking the question: how spread is isil and the affiliates around libya. have they infiltrated and are they in the east and west? all of this plays well into the sort of insecurity and uncertainty that libyans are living in and certainly, also raising the questions of the international community level. >> why hoda? why attack the empty iranian ambassador's residence in tripoli? >> well, the republican -- iran has never been a frien

hoda abdel hamid is there for us earlier. hoda what is the situation there now? >> reporter: things have settledown and certainly the tension that we saw earlier in the day has called down. it is nighttime. a lot of families are in their tents. some people are queuing at the various food points to get a hot meal if they can. the amount of people makes it they wait for quite a time for that. but you also see along the road, coming here towards this camp, more and more people marching. the situation is certainly calmer. have that still emotional anxiety among the refugees everybody asking all the time when is this border going to open? is the border going to open? and certainly they are worried that maybe they don't have the -- the required documents to continue through the balkan routes, a stark contrast to the tension that was here earlier in the day. impatient and exhausted. they first march towards the railway gate along the water. demanding once again to be let through. but soon things got out of scroll. some refugees managed to tear down part of the fence. ot

hoda abdel hamid. hashem ahelbarra. >> reaching europe does not mean the search for a better life. hoda abdel hamid reports of migrants telling her about their escape and the life they were coming from. >> reporter: her journey started across the sea 4,000 kilometers away in eritrea. it took her nearly three years to reach her location. a few weeks ago we met there were no smiles at the time. >> translator: the prison was awful. we knew knowing where we were for how long. i was thinking all the time, what will i do, what will i do? how? i thought it was the end. the day you came to visit we were happy we were hoping you could get us out. but the next day they took us to tripoli, they put us in a building and we weren't allowed out until we paid. he paid the guys in the prison and we left. first we walked out into the sea, the water was to my chest we got on a big boat and then reached the big boat. on third day in italy perhaps coincidence or fate, we meet again, alongside a sefntion reception center for newly arrived migrants. the travel companions gave each other courage then and

let's go straight to hoda live from ramallah in the west bank. hoda, this stabbing took place at the coluheck point between jerusalem and the west bank. >> reporter: yes, absolutely, it's the main crossing for anyone in the northwest side trying to reach jerusalem and the palestinian neighborhoods of occupied jerusalem. now, what we know is they is a 23-year-old palestinian. we don't know exactly from where he comes from. we have conflicting reports on that, but he was crossing from -- he was crossing back in to ramallah, and from what we understand, it was -- he actually tried to carry out two stabbings in the sense that he first tried to stab an israeli border guard. he was shot at the first time, then as he was laying on the ground, an israeli explosive expert came to search him to make sure if he didn't have anything else on him, and that's when the young man pulled a second knife and actually managed to slightly nvrnling the israeli expert of explosives. at that point, he was shot dead. this is the first time actually we have such an attack

but let's take you now to hoda abdel hamid.s in the greek border town south of the macedonian border. and hoda we were seeing earlier shocking footage of police using batons to control the refugees. >> reporter: yes, indeed. that actually happened this morning. there was a large group of refugees probably between a thousand and 1,500, it was pouring rain, like ask happening now. they were very eager to get into macedonia, the macedonia border police were stopping them. so there has been a little bit of scuffle as they were pressing and the police were pressing them back. this is not the first time the macedonian border police used such tactics. it has been going on ever since the refugee crisis spilled on to this border. because the border is about 50 meters behind me, and if you see there is a whole continuous flow since about half an hour ago, a continuous flow of refugees arriving now by bus, because greece has changed their regulations over the past few weeks, so they are allowed to take buses, and i can see a bus, again, a

from here wr we find hoda abdel hamid at the greek side of the border. she joins us live.a the bottleneck is almost like the latest installment of a refugee crisis that has been going on in europe for a very long time. they do have a six-point plan, do you think that could solve the problem at man made camps like where you are now? >> reporter: i think in the long run, it might regulate the flow of refugees coming into europe, and streaming them into vep shun centers before relocating them, but now we are facing on emergency here in this camp that grows by the day. the latest figure is between 11 and 12,000 people who are living in dire conditions here. it's very cold. it has been raining. there's mud puddles everywhere. children are getting sick. it is a very difficult situation. the border is more shut than open, just to give you an indication, the latest figure we got is that only 84 people were allowed in from 6:00 this morning to 6:00 this afternoon. now in any given hour, you have probably more than 100, 150 people who keep on pouring here. so that bottleneck is not

let's go to hoda abdel hamid now. you are on the greek side.talk about the greek concern that if other countries shut their borders, then greece which is in a terrible financial state anyway, is going to have to find for these refugees who have got nowhere else to go. >> reporter: that's absolutely right. what greece is worried about is the domino effect. when you speak to people they tell you, austria is going to close its boarder, there was a group of refugees who were sent back from slovenia, and the concern is that everybody will be sent back to the entry point, which is greece or the islands of greece, and then what will greece do with that? as you said, it has its own financial problems and crisis here, and the number of refugees coming is not as high as it was six months ago, but it is still very high. today at the border there was about 2,000 people who throughout the day were shipped in -- were bussed in, i would say, to cross into macedonia. greece has also another problem, is that -- at the moment only nationals from iraq, syria, and

hoda abdel hamid is live on the border. hi there, hoda, so what is the situation, currently?reporter: well, the border has reopened after not only the afghans, but also those nationalities considered economic migrants were evacuating from this crossing point. but the border has reopened for syrians and iraqis but there are restrictions and we have seen some syrians who have been asked to return back to greece simply because they did not have enough paperwork to support their claim or to prove that they are indeed syrians or iraqis. now these are -- these restrictions were imposed by this -- i would say subgroup that was created within europe that includes fy -- five countries. so from now on the process has changed for syrians and iraqis, and unless they have an id, birth certificate or passport it will be very difficult for them to go through. before all they needed was a piece of paper issued by the greek authorities that proved that they had actually entered europe from one of the islands. >> and what have people been telling you? i can only imagine this must be having a d

and for the new arrivals, the only option is to wait their turn. >> hoda abdel-hamid is live. extraordinary pictures in your report. tell me more about what you are seeing now, right behind you? >> well, the port is behind me. it's complete chaos. they are accused of refugees going in both directions for hundreds of meters, and the wait is extremely long. all of these people are dying to be processed inside the port. to get a piece of paper allowing them to board a ferry. the greek authorities are overwhelmed. it's a long weight. sometimes they can go up to more than a week. some of the refugees are tired. what you see behind me is happening all over the town mere. wherever it is that the public space is available. wherever it is that you find people camped out. the greek removed thousands in this port. they are outside of the city. in an empty land. i was speaking to the head of the unrcr. trying to make a registration. as we speak, hundreds are offpouring into the island. >> we talk about people being registered and going on to a ferry. what's then? where does the ferry take
